KNITTING GUILD OF THE DESERT
Summary of Charity Knitting
APPROVED June 7, 2021
“The mission of the Knitting Guild of the Desert (KGD) is to promote and improve the craft of knitting. The Guild will be of assistance to the community through philanthropic knitting projects.”
To fulfill this mission of the KGD, members are encouraged to donate handcrafted items to organiza tions that the KGD Board approves as beneficiaries of its members’ generosity. The only limit on which groups might qualify is that handcrafted donations should go to entities located in the Coachella Val ley. There is limited charity yarn available for anyone wanting it.
Below is a summary of the status of Charity Knitting by KGD members as well as possible future groups and groups that will be removed from the list:

CHARITIES ON HOLD | CONTACT PERSON | DETAILS |
Desert Regional Baby Hats & Blankets | Helen Leonte | Calls to a former recipient, Desert Regional Hospital, have not been returned. |
Sebastian Hats | Barbara Brown and Janet Dyer | This project is on hold until schools reopen and determine their needs. It is also possible that the Galilee Center in Mecca may be a donor site in Fall 2021. |
DROPS | ||
Comfort for Critters | Gussie Lewis | This project involved donating knitted items for shelter animals but contacts with local shelters have not produced any potential recipients for donations at this time. |
Hat Not Hate | Gussie Lewis | Gussie asked Joann Fabrics about being a drop site for Blue Hats, but it only supports Lion Brand Yarn’s Linus Project at this time and additional programs must be approved by its corporate of fice. Also, in order to work, the project needs a whole school to accept it as a program and that is not a viable option at this time. Gussie mailed the 12 remaining KGD hats to Entwined Yarn, an of ficial Hat Not Hate drop site located in McMinnville, Oregon. |
Navy Hats | Mary Ann John son | Mary Ann is phasing out this effort. |
San Jacinto High School Class | Louise Wolf and Mary Ann Johnson | The goal of this in-person project was to teach students how to knit squares and turn them into blankets but schools are not open, and volunteers are not available to teach at this time. |
Teddy Bears | Cathleen Jolley | Cathleen researched local agencies and potential drop sites for these but did not find any possibilities at this time. |
Twiddle Muffs | Sonia Penny | This project will be dropped from the list. Linda Croushore deliv ered the 11 remaining KGD Twiddle Muffs to Caleo Bay Memory Care in LaQuinta. |
USO | Ann Leiboh | Ann collects pre-packaged snacks, toiletries, etc. but this project will be dropped from the list because it is not a charity for knitted items. |
