Lead Coaches

Mark Townsend, Head Coach/Genesis Lead Coach/LC Senior Lead Coach

Mark began swimming competitively at the age of 8. He competed for the Cress Creek Country Club in the Naperville Park District, the Naperville YMCA, Naperville North High School, The University of Iowa, and North Central College. He was a four-time high school All American and thirteen-time NCAA D3 All American. Mark captained both the Naperville North and North Central College Swim Teams. He has earned Bachelor Degrees in Management from North Central College (’91), and in Elementary Education from Benedictine University (’97). Mark has been coaching swimming since 1985. He was a three year assistant coach for the Cress Creek Country Club and a two year assistant coach for the Downers Grove Area Swim Team. Mark was the head coach of the Huntington Estates Swim Team for 9 summers. Mark is the original Head Coach and one of the founding members of the Maverick Swim Club (est. 1994). Mark resides in Aurora with his wife, Katie, and son, Logan.

Megan Mau, PreCore Lead Coach/LC Black Lead Coach/Head Admin Coach

Megan swam competitively from the age of 5 to 17, mainly for the Cress Creek Rebels in the summer and Maverick Swim Club in the winter. Megan began her coaching career at Cress Creek in 2000 and coached there for fifteen summers. She coached for the Champaign YMCA Aquachiefs/Heat during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 SC seasons while attending the University of Illinois and earning a Bachelor's degree in Education. Since 2008, Megan has been coaching for Maverick. In 2009, she led the Mighty Mavs group. In 2010, Megan became the lead coach of the PreCore group. She loves to help the youngest swimmers establish positive habits as swimmers. During 2016 and 2017 LC seasons, Megan was honored to join the Team Illinois coaching staff for the Central Zone meets. In 2018, 2019, and 2021, Megan served as the head coach for Team Illinois. TIL was victorious all five years! Away from the pool, Megan is a fifth grade teacher in Glen Ellyn at Park View Elementary School with a Master's degree in Educational Technology.

Kim Swanson, C1 Lead Coach

Kim began swimming at the age of 8. She swam for a YMCA in the northwest suburbs, Conant High School and Augustana College where she received her bachelor's degree. She competed regularly in many championship level swim meets, including YMCA Nationals, High School State finals and was ranked in the top 10 nationally for breaststroke in NCAA DIII. She was co-captain of her High School team for two consecutive years, where she first got the itch to coach after being asked to help new swimmers on the boys team with their technique. She began head coaching summer teams in 1994 (currently Woodridge Sea Lions) and has been coaching with the Maverick Swim Club since 2014. She has a passion for building and improving on swimmers' stroke techniques to aid them in dropping time and enjoys paying back her love for the sport to new generations of swimmers. She also has three children who all currently love the sport of swimming as well.

Krista Gensler, C2 Lead Coach/Blue Group Lead Coach

Krista started swimming at age 6 for a YMCA team in Brainerd, Minnesota. She continued to swim through high school and into college at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. While at Stevens Point, Krista earned a degree in English Education. Krista has coached high school teams in Minnesota and Wisconsin and most recently worked for the Wausau TIDE Swim Club as a coach, swim lesson coordinator, and parent liaison for the last 6 years. Krista joined the Maverick staff in the fall of 2015 and has worked as a C2 and Genesis assistant coach. Krista continues to be a swimmer herself with the Naperville Waves Masters Team. She also began coaching for Waves in August of 2021. Krista and Ben have two children: Elyse and Colin.

Missy Hines, C3 Lead Coach/LC Assistant Sub Coach

YMCA, B.R.Ryall YMCA, and Naperville Central High School. Missy received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University and taught for 5 years. She began coaching with the City of Plano Swimmers in Plano Texas in 1998 until moving back to Illinois in 1999 where she started coaching with Maverick Swim Club. Missy has been with Mavericks for 12 years, and this year will be her sixth year as lead coach for the Core 1 group. She also founded the Mighty Mavs group. Missy’s husband Jay is also a Maverick coach.

Keith Herrmann, Senior Lead Coach/LC Senior Assistant Coach

Keith started swimming at the age of 6 for the Lincoln Trail Sharks, out of Park Forest, Illinois. He graduated from Illinois State University in 1995 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Parks and Recreation, then received a Masters of Education from Aurora University in 2006. He was head coach of the Princeton Met Jets from 1995-1998, an assistant coach for Naperville North High School Boys for in 2006 and 2007, an assistant coach for the Plainfield 203 Cooperative Boys Swim Team from 2007-2020, and head coach of the Hobson West Waves from 2016-2019. He has been with the Maverick Swim Club Since 2012. Away from the pool, Keith teaches at Aurora University as Assistant Professor and Program Chair of Physical Education for the School of Education. He resides in Aurora with his wife Beth and their two children, Sam and Anna, who are also Maverick swimmers.

Amy Ruble, Mighty MAVS Lead Coach/SC PreCore Assistant Coach

Amy began swimming competitively at the age of 5 at the Elmhurst YMCA, then moving to the Hinsdale Swim Club and Hinsdale Central High School swim team. In 2000, Amy joined the Children's Aquatics staff at Edward Health and Fitness Center teaching group and private swim lessons and assisting with the swim program development. In addition to teaching swimming, Amy also still enjoys swimming competitively with the Naperville Waves Masters swim team and has been an active member since 1999. Amy has had many roles with the Maverick Swim Club from parent, board member and most recently coach. Amy has been the lead Mighty Mav coach since 2010. Away from the pool Amy enjoys spending time with her husband Tony, and their son and daughter.

Karla Bailey, Assistant Senior Coach/LC Senior Assistant Coach

Karla began swimming competitively at the age of 8. After moving to Naperville, Karla swam and was an assistant coach at Naper Carriage Hill for many years. She also swam for B.R. Ryall YMCA from 1993-2001. Karla is a graduate of Naperville Central High School where she was an All-American, state finalist (1997-2000) and co-captain her senior year. She continued her swimming career at Ball State University where she was a school record-holder, repeat team MVP and high-point scorer, second team All-MAC and part of the MAC Championship winning 200 Medley Relay in 2005. Karla has been involved with U.S. Masters Swimming and the Naperville Waves where she’s a former Master’s National Champion and team record-holder. She has a Bachelor’s degree in public relations from Ball State University and works full-time as a Vice President of Events and Stage Production at Jasculca Terman (JTPR) in Chicago.

Carrie Bell, Assistant Sub Coach

Carrie started swimming at the age of 5 with the Roselle Racers until age 18. She has earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and currently works as a substitute teacher. Carrie lives in Byron, IL with her husband, Lorne. They have three children, Rachael, Allison and Nathan. She enjoys competing in the Chicago Triathlon, as a relay, performing the swimming portion. Carrie has previously been an assistant coach with the Byron Tiger Sharks swim team.

Kathleen Bennett, Assistant C3 Coach

Kathleen Bennett began swimming competitively at the age of seven for the Branford Stingrays in Connecticut, and later for the Branford Hornets in High school. She continued swimming through college for the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Communications and Journalism. Kathleen moved to Naperville in 2004 with her husband, Craig. They have two children, Meghan and Garrity and El Hefe, their dog. Since her move to Naperville, Kathleen has continued swimming competitively for Naperville's Master’s team, Waves, and has officiated for local teams over the last three summers. She started coaching for Maverick Swim Club in the fall of 2013.

Lauren Carpenter, Assistant C2 Coach

Lauren started swimming with the Maverick Swim Club when it began in 1994 when she was in 5th grade. She continued swimming with the club through high school. Lauren was a 4-year varsity swimmer at Naperville North High School. Her favorite and best event was the 200 butterfly. She graduated from Naperville North in 2002. Lauren earned a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication and History at Augustana College. She started coaching for Maverick Swim Club in the fall of 2006. Lauren also works in insurance.

Rich Depew, Assistant C3 Coach

Rich started swimming at the age of 12 with summer teams in CA. Upon moving to Naperville, he competed for Naper Carriage Hill, Naperville Central, Naperville YMCA and North Central College. At NCC, he twice qualified for the Division III National meet. Wanting to give back to the sport, Rich decided to start coaching. He has coached for Maplebrook 2, Naperville YMCA, Wheaton Swim Club and is on his second stint with MAVS. Rich is the owner of an accounting and income tax business in Westmont, IL. He has two sons and is married to Terry, a former age group coach who now works in the bridal industry. In his spare time, Rich enjoys home remodeling, participation in triathlons, swimming with the Waves masters swim team and travel.

Liz Dillmann, Assistant C2 Coach

Liz is a Level 2 Age Group and Masters (Naperville Waves) coach. She started swimming at age 9 in Sydney, Australia, where she held National Age Group and Open records and competed internationally. She continued to swim at the University of Illinois in Champaign, where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Exercise Physiology while teaching undergraduate competitive swimming, learn to swim, weight training and nutrition. She also coached the summer swim programs at U of I. She completed her Associates degree for Physical Therapy Assistant in Spring of 2013 with a 4.0 grade point. Liz currently competes in U.S. Masters Swimming, a National Champion in pool and Open Water events. She has 4 Masters World Records as part of FS and Medley relays from 2015-2016, and 3 titles at the 2018 Pan American Masters Championship in meet record and Fina Masters #1 World Ranked times. She has 4 children that have all swum for Maverick starting in 2003, and has been an assistant coach since 2008.

Brady Furleigh, Assistant PC Coach

Brady competitively swam for 12 years, since the age of 6. She swam for Rota Swim Club in Spain and qualified for the European Forces Swim League (ESFL) in 2012 and 2013. After her return to the United States, she swam for Clark Swim Club and George Mason High School from 2014 to 2016. Brady graduated from DePaul University with a B.S. in Business and Geography minor, and she is currently in a postgraduate program for Sustainability Management. Brady enjoys biking, hiking, and Fantasy Football in her free time.

Therese Gaffney, SC Assistant C1 Coach

Ben Gensler, Assistant PC Coach/LC Senior Assistant Coach

Ben started swimming at the age of 6 for the Huntington Estates Seahawks, joined Mavericks at age 8, and swam for Benet Academy for 4 years. Additionally, he swam 4 years in college at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, where he was an NCAA Division III All-American. He coached for Huntington Estates from 2003-2005 and was the head coach at Huntington Estates from 2007-2009. He has coached both high school boys and girls in Wisconsin from 2008-2014 while teaching high school Spanish. Ben now teaches Spanish at Benet Academy. Ben is a masters swimming state champion in the 50 backstroke.  

Alex Gidlow, Assistant C1 Coach

Alex started swimming at the age of 8 for the Oakhurst North Torpedoes, joined Mavericks at the age of 9. He swam and played water polo at Metea Valley High School for 4 years, and swam for 4 years at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, where he was voted co-captain for his junior and senior seasons. He graduated from UWW with a degree in Social Studies Broadfield Education with a History emphasis. He has experience as the head coach for the Oakhurst North Torpedoes, as well as Co-Head Coach for 1 Fall and Winter season for South Central Swim Team, a USAS club in Janesville, Wisconsin. He is currently at Metea Valley High School working in the physical education department.

Jay Hines, Assistant Sub Coach

Jay started as a summer swimmer at age 8 and swam competitively for Burkwood Swim Club of Mechanicsville VA, Hobson West of the Naperville Park District, the Naperville YMCA, Naperville Central High School, and Bradley University. Jay’s coaching experience includes 1 year as the Bradley Bourbonnais Head Coach, 1 year as a NCHS Volunteer Coach, and over a decade as a Maverick Swim Club Coach. Jay earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Bradley and is a partner in Thruput Inc. and GreenCells Inc. away from the pool. He resides in Aurora with his wife, Core Three Coach Missy, and their two sons, Jamey and Justin.

Heather Howland, Assistant C3 Coach

Heather started swimming at age 13. She swam in high school then returned to swimming as a masters swimmer in 2004. Since then she has competed in multiple national championships and is a two-time national champion. Heather coached summer league swimming in Inverness from 2008-2014 and was the head coach of the Naperville Tennis Club Orcas from 2015-2019. She began coaching Mavericks in 2015. She has a B.A. in history from Ohio State and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from National-Louis. She has been teaching since 2008, and she has taught Kindergarten, second grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade. She currently teaches fourth grade.

Dave Johnson, Assistant Sub Coach

Dave started swimming competitively at the age of 5 with Farmstead Swim Team. At 8, he began swimming year round with the Naperville YMCA. He also swam with Huntington Estates while in high school and swam at Naperville Central High School. Dave swam in college at North Central College and was a national qualifier in the sprint freestyles. Dave also officiates swimming, both locally and at the national level, for USA Swimming. On the dry side Dave is a commercial manager for Coriant selling telecommunications equipment. He lives in Naperville with his wife, Jen and two children, Lisa and Matthew.

Jim Lullo, Assistant Sub Coach

Coach Jim has been coaching Maverick Swim Club since 2006. He began swimming year round at age 7. Jim swam on Hobson West Waves, Maverick Swim Club and Naperville Central. In high school, he was captain of the state champion NCHS swim team as well as an individual state champion freestyler with the Mavs. Jim then swam at Ball State University where he studied Elementary Education. Outside the pool, you can find Jim teaching 5th grade at Steeple Run Elementary School in Naperville.

Brian O'Dowd, Assistant Senior/Gen Coach

Brian began coaching in 1996. His coaching experience includes being a USA Swimming coach for the Maverick Swim Club (‘03-present) and the Iowa City Eels Swim Club (‘00-’03), a Naperville Park District coach for Naper Carriage Hill (’13-present), White Eagle Golf Club (‘00-’05), and Maplebrook One (‘96-‘99), and a volunteer coach for the NCHS boy’s swim team (’03-present). He swam for Maplebrook One, the Naperville YMCA, the Maverick Swim Club, Naperville Central High School (4 year varsity member, State runner-up in the Medley relay, team captain, and 2 time All-American), and the Iowa Master’s swim team. Brian teaches 8th grade Language Arts Kennedy Junior High in Naperville District 203. He resides in Naperville with his wife Jenny and their two daughters, Allison and Kaitlyn.

Teri Peot, Assistant Core 1 Coach/LC Blue Assistant Coach

Teri started swimming at age 6 for the Maplebrook I Marlins and the Naperville YMCA. She continued swimming competitively through high school and college. Teri was a member of the Division II National Champion swim team at Clarion University of PA where she specialized in the distance freestyle and butterfly events. She has also competed in U.S. Masters Swimming as well as open water events. Teri has several years of coaching and swim lesson experience. Teri lives in Naperville and is a pre-k teacher in the West Aurora School District.

Maggie Ruble, Assistant C1 Coach

Maggie began swimming at age 4 for Meadows Swim Club. She joined Maverick Swim Club at the age of 7 then continued through high school. Maggie swam for Naperville North High School and was a member of the water polo team. She began coaching with Maverick in 2011 as an assistant Mighty Mavs coach. Maggie has coached long course and Core 1. Maggie is currently working as an occupational therapist.

Jack Ruble, Assistant Sen/Gen Coach

Jack’s swimming career began at the age of 7 when he started swimming for the Maverick Swim Club and the Meadows Swim Club in the summers. Jack swam for Naperville North High School, where his senior year in 2010 was voted a team co-captain and was a state meet qualifier. He swam for Wittenberg University for two years prior to graduating with degrees in history and Russian Studies. Jack coached for Cress Creek Country Club from 2008-2012. Currently, he works as a Financial Professional for Charles Schwab in Chicago.

Nora Schroedter, Assistant Sub Coach

Noor Shammas, Assistant Sub Coach

Noor has been involved with the sport of swimming for many years. She swam in the summer for the Farmstead Swim Team from the age of 9 until she graduated from high school, Maverick Swim Club for four years, Naperville Central High School swim team and water polo team for four years, where she was captain of the swim team her senior year. Noor was an assistant coach at Farmstead for 5 years, and the head coach at Farmstead 2007-2014.  She has been coaching with the Maverick Swim Club since 2007. Noor earned a second Master's degree in Literacy from Judson University (‘13), a first masters degree in Instructional Technology from Lewis University ('10) and a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary  Education from Illinois State University ('07). Noor is currently a doctoral candidate at Judson University. She taught fourth grade in the Oswego School District #308 from 2007-2017. Noor has been a Learning Support Coach in Naperville District #203 since 2017. Noor enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going shopping, traveling, and reading.

Eileen Skowronski, Assistant Sub Coach

Eileen grew up in Naperville and started swimming competitively at the age of 6 through Southpointe Sea Stars. Eileen swam at Maverick Swim Club, Fox Valley Swim Club, Delta Aquatics, and moved back to Mavericks to finish out her club swimming career. Eileen attended Neuqua Valley High School where she was on varsity for swimming and water polo through her junior year. Eileen taught swim lessons to kids ranging from 1 year old to 18 years old for 4 years throughout high school and college. Eileen graduated from Aurora University (‘18) with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing with a minor in physiology and psychology. She now works at Advocate Aurora Health Care as a utilization management nurse. Eileen enjoys spending time with family and friends, snuggling up to her dogs, and reading in her free time.

Karen Snyder, Assistant Sub Coach

Karen grew up in Naperville and started swimming competitively in the summers when she was 5 years old. At the age of 8, she joined the Naperville YMCA Swim Team for winter swimming. In high school, Karen swam for Naperville Central and placed top 4 at State in the 100 breaststroke all 4 years. She went on to swim 4 years at the University of Michigan. Karen was an assistant swim coach at Centennial Beach for 3 summers and head coach for 1 summer. She also spent a summer as the head coach at Sea Lion Aquatic Park in Lisle. Karen has been coaching with Maverick Swim Club since 2007. Karen earned a B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University. She lives in Naperville with her husband and four children.

Kellie Willhite, Assistant Coach

Kellie began swimming with the Brookdale Buccaneers when she was 8 years old. She joined Maverick Swim Club that winter and swam with the team for 10 years. During her time at Metea Valley High School, she was a seven-time All-American. She currently is studying and swimming at Brown University (‘24).

Hannah Wood, Assistant PreCore Coach/LC Blue Assistant Coach

Hannah began swimming for Hobson West when she was 7 years old. She continued to swim competitively for the YMCA and Naperville Swim Club. She swam for Maverick Swim Club all 4 years of high school, where she was also a member of the Varsity Swim Team at Naperville Central High School. Hannah began coaching for Maverick with Mighty Mavs in 2010 and has since worked with both Pre-Core, Core 1, and Long Course groups. Hannah graduated from the University of Illinois with her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology (‘17) and began working in Naperville School District 203 in 2017. In addition to swimming in her free time, Hannah also enjoys running and traveling.
