1.  Receiving Your Chromebook

a.        Distribution of Chromebooks

When a student enters 9th grade a device is assigned to them until their enrollment in OCSD ends, in which the device must be returned.

Students in 9th-12th grade will take the device home each night and bring it to school each day. Please store in a safe place when not in use to prevent accidental damage, and be sure to bring to school charged each day.

For students in grades Pre-K through 8, devices will remain in the classroom daily unless otherwise instructed by the teacher to take them home.

b.        Transfer/New Student Distribution

All transfers and new students to the high school will work with the guidance department upon enrollment to be assigned a Chromebook. The Chromebook, when assigned, will be placed in the high school library.

2.  Returning Your Chromebook

a.        End of Year

Seniors are required to return their Chromebook as part of senior obligations prior to graduation. All other students will be given additional information each June about summer procedures.

b.        Transferring/Withdrawing Students

Students that transfer out of or withdraw from the Oswego City School District must turn in their Chromebooks, cases, power supplies, and any other equipment issued with the Chromebook, to their school on their last day of attendance.

3.  Taking Care of Your Chromebook

Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook they have been issued by the school. Secondary students may bring broken Chromebooks to the school library as soon as possible so that they can be taken care of properly. Elementary students should notify their classroom teachers as soon as possible. District-owned Chromebooks should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance.

a.        General Precautions

b.        Carrying Chromebooks

c.        Screen Care

The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to heavy objects, rough treatment, some cleaning solvents, and other liquids. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.

4.  Using Your Chromebook At School

5.  Lost/Damage/Stolen

Students are expected to adhere to all school rules, policies and code of conduct while using their assigned Chromebook. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken by school personnel when warranted.

If a device is lost, damaged or stolen, the student must notify school administration immediately. A loaner will be provided through the library, but it may not be the same style device.

Students and families are responsible for their assigned Chromebook and charging cables. In the event of a stolen device, building administration should be contacted. Lost or damaged devices should be reported in the buildings. Please note that the district will be invoicing families based on the original purchase price of the broken/lost device (or charger), which may range (based on Chromebook model) from $280-$425.

USB-C Replacement power cables can be purchased instead of invoiced. The charging cable required is a USB-C 65 watt charger, you can find them most places but here is one on Amazon. If a charger is not returned or lost, an invoice will be sent for the replacement cost which can range from $9.99 to $24.99.

6.  Using Your Chromebook Outside of School

A Wi-Fi Internet connection will be required for the majority of Chromebook use. However, some applications can be used while not connected to the Internet. Students are bound by the Oswego City School District Acceptable Use Policy, Administrative Procedures, and all other guidelines in this document wherever they use their Chromebooks.

7. Operating System and Security

Students may not use or install any operating system on their Chromebook other than the current version of ChromeOS that is supported and managed by the district.

a.        Updates

b.        Virus Protection

8. Content Filter

The district utilizes an Internet content filter that is in compliance with the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All Chromebooks, regardless of physical location (in or out of school), will have all Internet activity protected and monitored by the district.

9. Software

a.        Google Workspace for Education

10. Privacy Expectations

School-issued Chromebooks have been configured to optimize the educational experience for students and staff as well as protect students from harmful content. Chromebooks and student accounts remain the property of Oswego City School District and users should expect limited privacy via their Chromebook and account use.

a.        On Campus Chromebook Use

  1. As mentioned in Section 8 (Content Filter), all network traffic on the school network goes through a content filter that prevents students from accessing harmful content.
  2. This filter also logs user activity, including those websites accessed by the end user. The filtering policies are a requirement of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
  3. No content filter is 100% accurate, and you should maintain open dialogue with your children regarding appropriate internet use.

b.        Off Campus Chromebook Use

  1. When Chromebooks are being used off school grounds (i.e. home use), district content filtering will still be in place via Chrome Extension on student accounts.
  2. Chromebooks will be filtered for the purpose of preventing students from accessing harmful content in a similar way they are filtered on school grounds.

11. Appropriate Uses and Digital Citizenship

School-issued Chromebooks should be used for educational purposes and students are to adhere to the OCSD Acceptable Use Policy and all of its corresponding administrative procedures at all times.

Students may be held accountable for any inappropriate damage or behavior in accordance with the school district code of conduct.
