CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class seeks to promote a love for reading and a thoughtful approach to what is read.  A variety of genres will be explored in the class such as historical fiction, adventure stories, and a biography.  We will be doing a short poetry unit that will study a few British poets and their poetry.  We will also read some short stories and will study 2-3 acts of a Shakespeare comedy.  Through discussion and interactive class activities, we will learn about story elements, authors, and what makes good literature.  The main homework for class will be completing assigned reading, a project for each book, and a weekly journal assignment.  

HOMEWORK:Homework will include weekly reading and journal entries.  Projects will be due every 3-4 weeks depending on how much time we spend on the book.

QUIZZES:Journal entries will be counted as quizzes.  

TESTS:Test will be projects such as a newspaper article or poster that goes along with the book we are reading.  

PROJECTS/LABS:No

WRITING INTENSIVE?:There will be some writing.  Writing will mainly be journal entries which will be 1-2 paragraphs on the book we are reading.

1. A British Poetry Anthology: Learning Language Art Through Literature The Gold Book

(I suggest buying this on Christian Book Homeschool; it is a lot cheaper than Amazon).

2.Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

3. Streams to the River, River to the Sea by Scott O’Dell

4. Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes

5. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Please get the Dover Thrift Editions ISBN 0486474917).

6. Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

We will also be reading an Adventure story.   I have narrowed it down to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, or Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss.  If your student has any preference let me know.  I will let you know which book I decide on as soon as possible.  

I will provide the short stories and the Shakespeare acts.
