Mrs. Carmela Axelson received her bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in Spanish and Curriculum and Instruction.  In addition to her classes at ISU she has also studied in both Spain and Mexico.  She currently teaches Spanish II, III, IV.  She likes to spend as much time as possible outdoors and loves to run, rollerblade, dance, and play tennis.  When she decides to sit down she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Mr. Jason Bachman attended Illinois Central College where he received his Associate's degree, and then earned his Bachelor's degree in Ag Education from Illinois State University. In 2004, he received his M.S. in Counseling at Bradley University.  Mr. Bachman is a Guidance Counselor at EHS.  In his free time he enjoys team roping and spending time with his wife and three boys.

Mrs. Deborah Bertschi earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Education with a minor in History Education from Illinois State University.  She has a Master's in History from ISU as well.  She currently teaches Global Cultures (Community:  People and their culture), Early Western Civilization, and American Cultural Studies.  EWC and ACS are dual credit courses.  In her free time she enjoys reading, gardening, and attending the activities of her children.

Mrs. Janelle Brace grew up in Tuscola, IL. She received her associate's degree from Parkland Community College and then received her bachelor's degree in Special Education for Eastern Illinois University. Go Panthers! She is married to Ben and they have two daughters, Bryleigh and Bentley. She is passionate about helping St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and rooting for the Cubbies.

Mrs. Jessica Bushong graduated from Texas Tech University where she studied Theatre Arts, English, and Education. This year marks her third year in the English Department at Eureka High School. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Bushong feels grateful and blessed to be continuing her theatrical work by co-directing the fall shows/musicals. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (Samuel), drinking coffee with friends, and attending all the festivals/events that central Illinois has to offer.

Mr. Brett Charlton graduated with his Bachelor's Degree from Illinois State University and received his Master's degree from Olivet University.  He teaches Health & Wellness and Boys PE. He also

coaches track & field and cross country.  In his free time he enjoys hunting, fishing, running, and spending time with his family.


Mrs. Ferguson is the business and technology teacher at the high school.  She has an MBA from Illinois State University and is working on her Master's in Accounting through Liberty University online. Mrs. Ferguson also works at Heartland Community College in their business and technology lab and teaches an open-learning online Career and Success Strategies course and Lincoln College in their business department. Working at the colleges connects her with the skills that upper-level education is looking for. Her favorite things to do in her free-time are watching Netflix, working on improving her home, reading crime and mystery novels, and traveling. She has been to many states and a number of different countries with the EHS travel club. Mrs. Ferguson recently got married and is expecting her first child in January 2018.

While earning her Bachelor of Arts from Eureka College, Mrs. Jami Geirnaeirt played college basketball and softball and is a Hall of Fame Member.  She has a Master's degree from Illinois State University and teaches Physical Education, Health and Wellness, and Behind the Wheel driving.  She enjoys spending time with her son Dane, her husband Kyle, family, friends, nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. She also enjoys sports such as biking, boating, golfing, softball, basketball, and likes to shop and relax at home. Her favorite teams besides EHS sports are the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

We will be remembered by the tracks we leave behind.


Mr. William Glass has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education from Illinois State University and a Master's degree from Olivet Nazarene University.  He teaches Geometry.  In addition, he sponsors the Math Club and Junior Class.  In his free time he enjoys computers and video games, exercise, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Jason Greene has a B.A. in Physical Education from Eureka College and a Master of Education from Olivet Nazarene University.  In addition to his duties as athletic director, he teaches Driver's Education.  In his spare time he enjoys golf, basketball, and spending time with his 3 children, Keaton, Morgan and McKenzie.

Mr. Tom Hantak completed his first year of teaching and is now excitedly entering into his second year of teaching at the high school and will be teaching Chemistry I and Chemistry II. He received his Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (SIUE) in May of 2016 and hopes to eventually go back to school to receive a Masters degree at some point in the future. Mr Hantak is originally from the St. Louis, MO area, but lived in Germantown Hills, IL for most of his childhood and graduated from Metamora High School in 2012. From his short time in the district, Mr. Hantak has gotten involved in FCA (co-sponsor), the Cube, Fresh-soph baseball, Fight for Life, YFC Eureka Campus Life, and his church's youth group. In addition, his hobbies include sports (playing and watching), road trips, volunteering, youth ministry, and learning new things.

Mr. Joe Heavner grew up in Valmeyer, Illinois and attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale studying agriculture education. At Eureka High School he teaches Introduction to Agriculture, Agricultural Mechanics 1 and 2, Agricultural Business Management, and Veterinary Technology. He is a co-FFA advisor for the Eureka FFA chapter, his favorite FFA career development event is parliamentary procedure. Mr. Heavner enjoys watching sports and rooting for the St. Louis teams in his free time."


Mrs. Deanna Horton grew up in Washington, IL and currently resides in East Peoria. Mrs. Horton attended Illinois Central College, has a Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley University, and received her Master’s degree in Special Education in 2010. She worked as a Social Worker for a year before changing her career path to Education.  Before coming to Eureka, she taught Life Skills Special Education for two years at Fieldcrest High School. Mrs. Horton and her husband, Gerry, recently welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl (Sophia) in April.  She loves to spend time with her family and her two dogs, Riley and Chloe. She also loves to travel, shop, and cheer on the Chicago Cubs!

Mrs. Kathleen Irvin (English I) grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids.  She graduated magna cum laude with degrees in English, theatre arts, and secondary education.  Her first teaching job was at Eureka Middle School in Title One reading.  During this time, she was also lucky enough to direct the musical GUYS AND DOLLS at Eureka High School.  Recently, she spent 16 years teaching language arts, social studies, and theatre arts at Bloomington Junior High School.  While in Bloomington, she directed 20 full-scale musical productions and organized an annual Fine Arts Week with the professionals from the Illinois Shakespeare Festival.  In addition to her time in the classroom, Mrs. Irvin has extensive experience onstage, acting in over 1,000 professional performances.  She even met the love of her life onstage!  In her spare time, Mrs. Irvin enjoys singing, crafting, and shopping.  She feels blessed to reside in rural Congerville with husband Jim, son Joshua, and dog Jackson.

Mrs. Courtney Lowe graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in English and concentrations in professional and creative writing. She studied abroad at Harlaxton Manor in Grantham England and finished her teaching certification at National Louis University in downtown Chicago. At EHS, she teaches sophomore World Literature and Journalism. She is the senior class sponsor, assistant Speech Team coach, yearbook adviser and has her Journalism Education Association Certification. She lives in Germantown Hills with her husband Patrick and dog-child Rooney, and when she isn't at the high school, she enjoys seeing live music and hanging out with her family--parents Bob and Connie, sister Alison and brother-in-law Gary, and her niece and nephew Georgia and Gary III. Courtney also is a huge movie buff. Her movie trivia knowledge is extensive, and before becoming a teacher, she worked at the Chicago International Film Festival. She loves taking road trips in her Prius especially to Montana and Idaho for outdoor adventures and to visit family and friends, but the people in the Midwest are the best. The EHS students, staff, and community make it so she has the best teaching gig ever!  


Ms. Mindy Mahannah received her Associate's degree from ICC, Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Illinois State University, Master of Science degree in English Studies from ISU, and Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Memphis. She has been married to her husband Jay for over ten years. They have four kids: Aurora, Katja Sage, Phoenix, and Orion. They also have a miniature poodle named Charlie who keeps them on their toes. She is originally from Groveland, but recently moved back to the area after living in Memphis for six years. When she is not teaching, she enjoys being outside with her kids, especially when they go on hikes.

Mr. Joe Miller graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN in 2005 with a B.A. in History with a secondary licensure to teach. Mr. Miller completed his Master's Degree in the area of Psychology in the fall of 2010.  While at FHU, Mr. Miller played four years of college baseball. Following graduation, Mr. Miller taught one year of private school at White House Christian Academy, moved back to Illinois, and taught one semester of U.S. History at Canton High School.  Mr. Miller currently teaches Global Cultures, Psychology, and Sociology.  In his spare time, Mr. Miller enjoys coaching baseball, exercising, reading, and spending time with his wife (Andrea) and his two sons (Preston and Duke).

Michelle Monk attended Illinois Central College and transferred to Illinois State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. She began her teaching career in 1998 at Hall High School in Spring Valley and in 2000 she transferred to Tremont High School where she served as Biology teacher, Student Council Advisor and wore many other hats in the 12 years that she served that district. She earned her Masters of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from St. Xavier University in 2004 and continues to take courses when time allows. Michelle is extremely excited to join Eureka High School as the Biology I, Biology II, and Anatomy and Physiology teacher and Science Club Sponsor. In her spare time she enjoys reading, gardening, and attending activities of her children.

Mrs. Olivia Morris received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Eastern Illinois University.  Previous to Eureka High School, she taught at Fisher High School for two years.  She is excited to be back in Eureka teaching in the math department. In her spare time, Olivia enjoys running, traveling, hiking, and spending time with her family!

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Northern Illinois University, Mr. Matt O'Hanlon earned his Master's degree from Illinois State University.  He teaches Wildlife Biology and Biological Science Applications in Agriculture and coaches football. His hobbies include fishing, watching "Cops", shark wrestling and spending time with his family.

Mr. Jerry Prina graduated from Western Illinois University with his Bachelor's Degree in History Education in the winter of 2008. He played baseball at Danville Area Community College and transferred to Wester to finish his playing career with the Leathernecks. He and his wife Bethany reside in Goodfield and have three children; Brylie, Brielle, and Patrick. Mr. Prina teaches Government and Civics to sophomores at EHS.

Mr. Kenny Robertson graduated from Eastern Illinois University and teaches Industrial Arts. Mr. Robertson excelled in wrestling, where he was a three time NCAA Division I qualifier for Eastern Illinois University. While competing for the Redbirds he was a four time West Regional conference finalist. He took 3rd his freshman year, 2nd sophomore year in 2005, and then won the championship as a junior and senior in 2006 and 2007. As a junior in 2006, he was one match away from being an All American at the NCAA championships. His senior year was the last year that EIU sponsored a wrestling program, making Robertson the last NCAA qualifier the school ever had.

Mr. Eric Seim is a Physical Education/Health teacher at Eureka High School. He received his degree from Illinois State University. He and his wife, Maggie are expecting a baby girl this December (2013).


Mr. Todd Stalter earned his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from Illinois State University. He teaches Grades K-6 General Music, 5th and 6th Grade Brass and Percussion, ICC MUS 150 "What to Listen for in Music," is Director of Bands at Eureka High School, and serves as Chair of the Fine Arts Committee for District 140. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the National Association for Music Education, and the Illinois Music Educators Association. Mr. Stalter's compositions for Band are published by Alfred Publishing Co., some of which are included as significant repertoire in the noted educational reference series "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band." He has appeared as a conductor with numerous District, Honor, and All-State Bands, and served as a Head Clinician at the 2015 Illinois State University Band Director Summer Workshop. In April 2018, he will be Composer-in-Residence at the Illinois State University Concert Band Festival. Mr. Stalter maintains an active schedule as a festival adjudicator for IHSA, IESA, and IGSMA, and also serves as an ILMEA District and All-State trumpet judge. He lives in Eureka with his wife, Angie, who is Director of Orchestras at Parkside Junior High School, and Hershey, the family Aussie-Doodle.


Mr. John Stromberger came to EHS in 1994.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree in math education from the University of Illinois and a Master's Degree in education from Illinois State University. He currently teaches Algebra/Trigonometry and Algebra II. He is also the varsity softball coach. He enjoys music, genealogy, sports, and bird watching. His wife Connie is a math teacher at Limestone, and they have three daughters, Kaci, Lisa, and Tara, and one son, Jack.

Mr. Dave Tapp attended Illinois Central College, has a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University, and a Master of Arts degree from St. Xavier University. He obtained his Library Science endorsement from Illinois State University. Mr. Tapp is the district librarian. He and his wife (EHS alum) have three children. His pursuits include long distance running, road biking, and extended outdoor expeditions.

Ms. Kate Toering grew up in Chenoa, Illinois.  She graduated from Dordt College (Sioux Center, IA) in 2003, double-majoring in K-12 Spanish and Elementary Education.  During her studies, Kate spent a semester in Sevilla, Spain and HIGHLY encourages all students to study abroad for at least a semester!  She has also taken Spanish students on trips to Mexico, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.  Prior to teaching Spanish I & IV at Eureka, Kate taught High School Spanish at South O’Brien High School (Paullina, IA) for 12 years and at multiple Unit 5 Schools (Normal, IL) for 1 year.  In her spare time during the school year, she enjoys spending time with her two sons, baking, and exercising.  And during the summer she loves to travel internationally, tend to her garden, read a plethora of books (John Grisham, David Baldacci, and Francine Rivers are her favorite authors!), and bask in the sun.

Mr. Andrew Underwood is the Assistant Principal at EHS. He received Bachelor's degree in History from Eureka College and a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Eastern Illinois University. Prior to coming to Eureka, he served as a Social Studies teacher in Lowpoint-Washburn, Fairfield, and Newton, and he served as an elementary/middle school administrator in Johnston City. He and his wife, Nicole, have two children, Katie and Allison. Mr. Underwood enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and sports.


Mrs. Barb Wertz received her Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University and her Masters in Education Administration from Western Illinois University. She lives in Eureka with her husband Nathan (EHS 1995), daughter Samantha Morse (EHS 2017), daughter Miranda and son Brody. She is a retired (27+ years in the IL Army Natl. Guard) Veteran  and current Master Sergeant in the Illinois Army National Guard. In her free time she enjoys golfing, floating in her pool, reading, going on walks and entertaining.

Mr. Christopher Wells has earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL – the home of the Chicago Bears.  He has 15 years of coaching experience in football and 9 years of experience in baseball, some of which he spent as head coach for each sport. Mr. Wells has volunteered his time with various other activities and sports at both Eureka High School and Eureka Middle School. He brings to the Art Department at Eureka a background of Graphics Design, Photography, Animation and Illustration, and has added computer-based art to his resume as well. He enjoys traveling with students and has created a Travel Club at Eureka High School, offering a chance for students to “see the world”. His travels have led him to Italy, France, Greece, and England, with brief excursions to Frankfort and Munich, Germany.


Mrs. Kim Willi teaches Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Concepts of Math, and Statistics. She graduated from Concordia University with a degree in secondary education with a major in math and has a Master's in Mathematics from Illinois State University. In her free time she enjoys reading, running, biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

Mrs. Carissa Yeager graduated from Eureka College with her Bachelor's in Psychology. While attending Eureka College, she was a shortstop for the EC softball team and a Resident Advisor. She then went on to earn her M.A. in School Counseling from Bradley University. During her final year in Bradley's counseling program, she interned at Washington Community High School in the counseling department. Mrs. Yeager has always had a special place in her heart for Eureka and feels blessed to be beginning her career as a school counselor at EHS this year. In her free time, she enjoys playing softball, spending time with her family, and going to St. Louis Cardinal games!

Ms. Denise Yonker received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University in 2002.  She is the High School Assistant Band Director and teaches 5-8 grade band at the Middle School.  She assists with the high school marching band and enjoys playing clarinet and saxophone in the church orchestra, sports, and spending time with friends.
