La Guerre de 14-18

Depuis que l'homme écrit l'Histoire,
Depuis qu'il bataille à coeur joie
Entre mille et une guerre notoires,
Si j'étais tenu de faire un choix,
A l'encontre du vieil Homère 1,
Je déclarais tout de suite:
"Moi, mon colon, celle que je préfère,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!"

Est-ce à dire que je méprise
Les nobles guerres de jadis,
Que je me soucie comme d'une cerise 2
De celle de soixante-dix 3?
Au contraire, je la révère
Et lui donne un satisfecit
Mais, mon colon, celle que je préfère,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!

Je sais que les guerriers de Sparte 4
Plantaient pas leurs épées dans l'eau,
Que les grognards de Bonaparte
Tiraient pas leur poudre aux moineaux...
Leurs faits d'armes sont légendaires,
Au garde-à-vous, je les félicite,
Mais, mon colon, celle que je préfère,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!

Bien sûr, celle de l'an quarante
Ne m'as pas tout a fait déçu,
Elle fut longue et massacrante
Et je ne crache pas dessus,
Mais à mon sens, elle ne vaut guère,
Guère plus qu'un premier accessit,
Moi, mon colon, celle que je préfère,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!

Mon but n'est pas de chercher noise
Guerres saintes, guerres sournoises,
Qui n'osent pas dire leur nom,
Chacune a quelque chose pour plaire,
Chacune a son petit mérite,
Mais, mon colon, celle que je préfère,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!

Du fond de son sac à malices,
Mars va sans doute, à l'occasion,
En sortir une - un vrai délice! -
Qui me fera grosse impression...
En attendant je persévère
A dire que ma guerre favorite,
Celle, mon colon, que je voudrais faire,
C'est la guerre de quatorze-dix-huit!

The War of 1914-18

As long as Man has written history

As long as he’s gone into battle with a joyous heart

Into a thousand and one famous battles

If I were required to make a choice

Contrary to ancient Homer

I would declare right away:

“For me, colonel, my favorite one

Is the war of 1914-18!”

Is it to say that I despise

The noble wars of the olden days

That I don’t fret as much over them

As I do over the war of ‘70?

On the contrary, I revere it

And give it a good grade

But, colonel, my favorite one

Is the war of 1914-18!

I know that the warriors of Sparta

Weren’t planting their spears in the water,

That Bonaparte’s Old Guard

Weren’t shooting their gunpowder at sparrows

Their military exploits are legendary

Standing at attention, I applaud them

But, colonel, my favorite one

Is the war of 1914-18!

Of course, that of 1940

Didn’t disappoint me in the least

It was long and bloody

And I don’t spit on it

But, in my mind, it is hardly worth

Much more than an honorable mention

For me, colonel, my favorite one

Is the war of 1914-18!

My  purpose isn’t to pick a quarrel

Holy wars, secret wars

That dare not reveal their names

Each one has something pleasing about it

Each has its own merit

But, colonel, my favorite one

Is the war of 1914-18!

At the bottom of his bag of malevolence

Mars no doubt will, when the time is right,

Bring one out – a real treat!-

That will make a big impression on me…

While waiting for it, I persevere

In saying that my favorite war

The one, colonel, that I’d like to make

Is the war of 1914-18!
