Year | Course Description | Content | |
Intro to Business | Introduction to Business & Technology is the foundational course for Business and Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Human Resources Management pathways. The course is designed for high school students as a gateway to the career pathways above, and provides an overview of business and technology skills required for today's business environment. Knowledge of business principles, the impact of financial decisions, and technology proficiencies demanded by business combine to establish the elements of this course. Emphasis is placed on developing proficient fundamental computer skills required for all career pathways. Students will learn essentials for working in a business environment, managing a business, and owning a business. The intention of this course is to prepare students to be successful both personally and professionally in an information-based society. Students will not only understand the concepts, but apply their knowledge to situations and defend their actions/decisions/choices through the knowledge and skills acquired in this course. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and projects throughout the course standards to demonstrate the skills required by business and industry. Competencies in the co-curricular student organization, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), are integral components of both the employability skills standards and content standards for this course. |

Legal Environment of Business | The Legal Environment of Business addresses statutes and regulations affecting businesses, families, and individuals. All students will benefit with the knowledge of business law as they will eventually assume roles as citizens, workers, and consumers in their communities and in society at large. Students will get an overview of business law while concentrating on the legal aspects of business ownership and management. Legal issues addressed include court procedures, contracts, torts, consumer law, employment law, environmental law, international law, ethics, and the role of the government in business. Students will not only understand the concepts, but will also apply their knowledge to situations and defend their actions, decisions, and choices. |

Entrepreneurship | How do you turn an idea into a business? Experience just that in this course! Entrepreneurship focuses on recognizing a business opportunity, starting a business, operating and maintaining a business. Students will be exposed to the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and innovation in this course as they will either be the business owner or individuals working in a competitive job market in the future. Integration of accounting, finance, marketing, business management, legal and economic environments will be developed throughout projects in this course. Working to develop a business plan that includes structuring the organization, financing the organization, and managing information, operations, marketing, and human resources will be a focus in the course. Engaging students in the creation and management of a business and the challenges of being a small business owner will be fulfilled in this course. Entrepreneurship is the third course in the pathway in the Business Management & Administration Cluster. Students enrolled in this course should have successfully completed Introduction to Business & Technology and Legal Environment of Business. After mastery of the standards in this course, students should be prepared to take the end of pathway assessment in this career area. |

OTHER INFORMATION
Late Work Policy
All assignments assigned in a one week period are due on Friday at 5pm of that same week or the Wednesday the following week at 3:15pm. There is a “5 point a day” deduction for late work. If submitted late (after the time I’ve provided to be submitted by) on the day the assignment is due, 5 points are automatically deducted and 5 points off each day after it’s not turned in.
End of the Semester/Missing Work
Students that are missing multiple assignments at the end of the semester and ask “What can I do to bring my grade up?”, will be required to write a paper in MLA Format. The student will write an essay on how the content/lessons we learned specifically relates to EACH standard of the Unit and WHY (each standard needs to be referenced). The list of standards can be found on the Student Guide of each unit in Google Classroom. This will replace all Unit grades with a minimum of 80%. To be able to receive a 100%, the student must also explain HOW they believe they Mastered the content. This can be done and submitted at any time during the semester. The deadline to submit a paper to replace grades is May 16th @ 3:15pm. This provides the teacher enough time to properly read each submission and update Infinite Campus.
**Students will forfeit the grade change if a plagiarized and/or AI-Generated paper is submitted.
Absences
If a student must be absent, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for make-up work. Please refer to the “Late Work Policy” above. Excused absences (doctor’s note, parent notes, etc.) allows students to complete missing work without penalty, as long as it’s submitted in a timely manner.
Tardy to Class
Students have 6 minutes between classes; they have sufficient time to get to class! There’s a NEW tardy system that involves “Tardy Kiosks” located on the 800 hall and in the Commons. Once the door is closed after the bell rings, the student will enter their number on the Kiosk, it’ll print out a slip, and they will give it to the teacher once they enter the classroom. The slip will have to have their correct name printed on the slip in order to be let in.
Teacher Website/Google Classroom
Please visit our Google Classroom regularly for information regarding class activities, announcements, etc. It will provide you with information as well as information about the current activities and assignments we are working on.
Student Email/Google Classroom Notifications
You will receive notifications about when we change activities, new things are happening in class via email, OR posts from Google Classroom Announcements. Please make sure you are checking your school email multiple times a day for a personal email from me or notifications from Google Classroom about announcements that’ve been made. Students will receive updates such for Substitute days, assignment/quiz reminders, and school time changes.
Cell Phones/Technology
Students are NOT ALLOWED to use cell phones during class time. Each student will be assigned a number, and their phones are required to go into the Cell Phone Caddy (in their corresponding number) in the back of the room. Ms. Harris may ask questions where the student will need to use their mobile device. Otherwise, phones will STAY OUT OF USE for the duration of class time. Chromebooks/Lab Computers are usually in use AFTER the lesson is completed. If Ms. Harris has to inform the student to put their phone in the caddy once, it’s a warning. The second time and/or refusal to do so, it’s a Step in the 4-Step Referral Process.
Grades
Grades will be entered on Wednesdays. Students will be able to see their updated grades on Infinite Campus and Google Classroom no later than Thursday mornings unless stated otherwise. Contact home will be made each 4 ½ weeks each progress report if a student is failing.
