The name of our work is “Modern English neologisms: forms, tendency, meaning” and it is devoted to the study of neologisms as an integral part of modern English vocabulary.
Actuality: the modern English language leads a dynamic existence, develops its internal and external resources, adapting to the constantly changing conditions of social, cultural, political and cultural life, creating new forms and content, breaking away from old means of expression and producing new ones. A language is one of those spheres of human activity that are the first to respond to changes in all spheres of human life. The modern period of life is characterized by intensive development and global changes in the English language. A lot of new words appear in the English language every day. Many of them are connected with the spheres which develop rapidly in the last ten years: computers, social networking services and using mobiles.
Hypothesis: We guess that in the recent decade the majority of new English words are connected with the spheres of mobile communication and using social network services, and the majority of them are formed by suffixation.
The object of the research is neologism as the lexical unit of the English language.
The subject of the research is the ways of forming English neologisms and the ways of their appearing in the language.
The aim of the research is to examine, characterize and compare the ways of forming English neologisms and some techniques of their translation into Russian in order to create a glossary with the most generally used modern “Instagram” neologisms.
The objectives of the research are:
-to study the process of forming modern English neologisms and their different features;
-to find out in what spheres most English neologisms are used;
-to explain the necessity of the creation of a glossary helpful to teenagers;
-to conduct a survey among students;
-to generalize the obtained data and work out a glossary helpful to students.
The methods used in the research:
-the analysis of literature on the topic,
-problem search method,
-research method,
-method of systematization and generalization,
-presentation,
-the descriptive method,
-method of content analysis.
According to Russian linguists, neologisms can be of two types - of general language and author's. The neologisms of general language can be classified into the two main groups: terminological and stylistic. The Russian linguist V.I.Zabotkina divides all the English terminological neologisms into phonetic ones, borrowings from other languages, semantic ones, phraseological, morphological ones. In our study we turned to the analysis of morphological neologisms as these neologisms make up the majority of new words in the English language. We found out that the following morphological ways of forming new words are: affixation (prefixation and suffixation), conversion, word composition.
The most common translation techniques of neologisms are the following: tracing, transliteration, transcription, descriptive method.
In our first study we turned to Instagram as the most common source of communication between young people in our country and abroad. Having looked through the accounts of foreign teenagers and youth bloggers, we found and analyzed a hundred new words used in their publications and comments. Here we found out what neologisms were used most frequently and what techniques were used for creating them. Thus, we found out that most of the words were created using the following morphological techniques: suffixation (17%), prefixation (9%), conversion (11 %), word composition (47%), abbreviations (16%). According to the obtained data, we found out that most of the neologisms we studied were formed by using the technique of word composition (47%).
To find out how our teenager pupils can understand and translate “Instagram” neologisms we conducted a questionnaire in which we asked 20 students of the 7th form to answer whether they understand and can translate 15 neologisms derived by five different morphological ways. According to the obtained results, the easiest forms to perceive were prefixation (75% understand the meaning of neologisms formed using this technique), suffixation (73% understand the meaning), and conversion (78% understand the meaning); the hardest forms for understanding appeared to be word composition (52% understand the meaning) and abbreviation (55% understand the meaning). When speaking about the difficulties students met, we would like to mention that out of the students who don’t understand the given neologisms, 39% don’t understand the meaning of the words, 20% don’t understand the whole sentence (the context), and 41% hesitate whether they understand the words in the right way.
Thus, we can make a conclusion that to understand and use modern neologisms students should be great lovers of English, have a big desire to learn it, and be active users of computer, internet and foreign social networking services, or, better to say, follow foreign bloggers and accounts of foreign friends in international social networking services. That is why we made up a glossary of some internet neologisms which we consider efficient for using of internet neologisms in speech.
The carried out analysis allows us to make the following conclusions:
-We studied the process of forming modern English neologisms and their typical features, their types and the ways of translating them;
-We found out in what spheres of life most of new words appear in the language; studied the social networking service Instagram and its newly formed words;
-We generalized the obtained data and conducted a survey among pupils of the 7th form to reveal the problems in understanding and translating of some modern neologisms;
-According to the data we obtained, we created a vocabulary (glossary) helpful to young people learning English, who intensively use internet, messengers and social networking services, follow foreign bloggers and have foreign friends;
-Our hypothesis “We guess that in the recent decade the majority of new English words are connected with the spheres of mobile communication and using social network services and the majority of them are formed by suffixation” has been confirmed partly, because we found out that the majority of “Instagram” neologisms we studied were formed by word composition, not by suffixation.
The results of our study we consider useful because they give an opportunity to understand the English language better. They help to use new knowledge in international communication, texting and using social networking services and messengers.
