There will be two informal activities, starting from the venue*: a visit to the classic Belém region, ending at the social dinner location on Tuesday (24th); and a walking tour of iconic viewpoints along the riverside downtown on Wednesday (25th).
Tuesday (24th) - Visit to Belém
We have planned an informal visit to the Belém area, giving participants the opportunity to explore several historical monuments and museums, or enjoy the nearby parks.
From the conference venue, we will take the metro to Cais do Sodré and the train to Belém. There is a small hub of museums in Belém, among which we highlight the National Coach Museum (adult ticket price: 15€); the newly open Lisbon Earthquake 1755 for which we recommend booking a ticket in advance for the afternoon time slots (17:00 - 18:00 recommended) (adult ticket price: 22.5-31€); Centro Cultural de Belém, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art (Adult ticket price: 7€); the (Marine Museum (adult ticket price: 8€) and the Marine Planetarium (adult ticket price: 7€), for which a combined ticket is available at 12€ (adult); and the Jerónimos Monastery, one of the most popular and emblematic monuments of Lisbon. We recommend booking tickets in advance for the afternoon (tarde - 14:00-18:00) time slot (adult ticket price: 18€).
There are other attractions aside from museums, like Pastéis de Belém, one of the most renowned producers of Pastel de Nata in Lisbon. We recommend enjoying some pastries in the shade at Vasco da Gama Garden or Empire Square Garden, just across the street. On the other side of the train tracks lies the Monument to the Discoveries, honoring the Portuguese sailors of the 15th and 16th centuries. Walking a bit further along the river, visitors will come across the Tower of Belém (currently closed for construction work) and its tranquil riverside garden.
Participants will be free to explore the attractions mentioned above and more. The meeting point will be at the Belém train station (on platform 2, the one furthest from the river) between 7:00 and 7:30 PM, to head to the social dinner location. We will then take the train to Alcântra-Mar and then walk to Cantina Lx.
Wednesday (25th) - Walking tour
We have planned an informal tour of the downtown area, featuring several viewpoints and visiting the ruins of Lisbon’s castle, perched atop one of its seven hills.
From the conference venue, we will take the metro to Baixa-Chiado. On the first leg of the tour, we will visit the São Pedro de Alcântara and Alto de Santa Catarina viewpoints, ending at Praça do Comércio. For those who prefer not to walk up the hill, there are museums to visit, such as The National Museum of Contemporary Art, or they can head toward Rua do Carmo or Avenida da Liberdade for some shopping.
The second leg of the tour heads toward the castle ruins. On the way, we will stop by Sé de Lisboa, and other two viewpoints (Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Recolhimento viewpoint), before arriving at São Jorge castle which can be visited if so desired (adult ticket price: 15€). From there, we will head to Martim Moniz Square, ending the tour.
From Baixa-Chiado to Martim Moniz Square, the full walking route, including all the viewpoints, covers aproximately 5 km. Please note that the walk from Praça do Comércio to São Jorge castle is mostly uphill on cobblestone streets, which may not be suitable for individuals with reduced mobility.
This is an outdoor activity, susceptible to environmental conditions beyond our control. As such, the tour may be subject to-last minute modifications or cancellation, depending on weather conditions, and may be replaced with more suitable indoor activities.
