The owners of the Hanna Heritage Place development on Northwest Mulholland Drive in Roseburg are getting set to have the former Elmer’s Restaurant building removed. Bruce Hanna told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that in preparation, the company has recently allowed the Roseburg Fire Department and Central Douglas Fire and Rescue to access the building in order to get needed training.
Elmer’s Restaurant closed in August. It was owned by Thomason Hospitality Group, based in Grants Pass. Hanna said the building was constructed in the early 1970s. Hanna said developers are working on plans for the site, but nothing is firmed up yet.
The highly visible location is on the corner of Mullholland Drive and Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard, just east of Interstate 5.
On Wednesday, work appeared to be going on inside the building. Hanna said the deconstruction will become very visible this week and into early next week.
Also at the Hanna Heritage Place, A new Holiday Inn Express motel is under construction just north of the old Elmer’s building. Hanna hopes to have that project completed in the spring of 2026.

The City of Roseburg is seeking applicants for the Planning Commission.
A city release said the current vacancy must be filled by someone who lives in the city, after Planning Commissioner Janelle James resigned. That resignation was accepted on Monday, December 9th.
Commissioners serve four-year terms unless they are filling a vacant unexpired term. The person appointed to fill this vacancy would serve until December 2028.
The Planning Commission considers long – and short-range land use development issues within the city and urban growth boundary. The commission makes decisions based on City Land Use and Development Regulations. The commission reviews and acts on quasi-judicial applications filed by land owners and/or their agents as well as on legislative applications initiated by the city. While some applications are a recommendation forwarded to the city council for final consideration, other decisions are final unless appealed to the council.
The commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Commission members are appointed by the city council, following an application and interview process. Interviews of applicants for this position are tentatively scheduled to take place before the 7:00 p.m. city council meeting on January 27th. Qualified applicants will be contacted to set up interviews.

The Ford Family Foundation has announced the promotion of Keavy Cook, who currently serves as its Director of Children, Youth and Families program, to the inaugural role of Vice President of Programs.
A TFFF release said Cook will direct the foundations grantmaking practice and process, support program strategy and ensure cross-program alignment. Cook, who is the longest serving program staffer with the largest grantmaking department, holds deep institutional knowledge and relentless love for the communities the foundation serves.
Foundation President and CEO Kara Carlisle said, “Anyone who knows Keavy knows that she is a person of great integrity and authenticity; she leads from the heart and brings exceptional intelligence to our work”. Carlisle said, “In promoting her to this new role, we have fundamentally strengthened our ability to advocate for rural children”.
Cook joined the foundation in 2008 as one its first program officers, was promoted to grants manager, and since 2014 has led the Children, Youth and Families team – advancing the foundation’s two-generation approach to parenting education, child abuse prevention, education, and more. Rural was her focus since she moved to Oregon, as she worked previously for the Resource Assistance for Rural Environment program at the University of Oregon, which builds capacity in rural communities.
Cook said, “It’s an honor to lead people who are so passionate about making change”. Cook said, “At our core, we’re a relational, rural, placed-based funder. I’ve seen how our grants help catalyze change and can’t wait to build on the progress we’ve made – in deeper, more targeted ways”.

The 31st annual D. R. Johnson Memorial Timber Truckers Light Parade is happening this Saturday night.
The popular south county event begins at the D. R. Johnson Mill in Riddle at 5:30 p.m. Organizer Theresa McCabe said the route goes through Main Street in Riddle, out Riddle Bypass Road towards Old Pacific Highway, and down the highway to Myrtle Creek. McCabe said the parade ends on Main Street.
After the parade is over, awards and a participant raffle is held in the Myrtle Creek Community Center. The Myrtle Creek/Tri-City Area Chamber of Commerce will be giving out chili, hot cocoa, hot coffee and cookies. It is free but donations are appreciated.
McCabe said to take part, a vehicle just has to be road worthy and have lights. There will be six class groups – each having a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. Judging is handled by members of the Riddle Chamber of Commerce.
For the last several years, the event has averaged 50 entries. Every year spectators line the parade Route from Riddle to Myrtle Creek, with as many as 20,000 people viewing the light parade.

The day-use parking fee will increase from $5 to $10 per day at the 25 Oregon State Parks that currently charge for parking, starting on January 2nd.
An Oregon Parks and Recreation Department release said the 12-month and 24-month permits will remain the same price in 2025.
The permits cost $30 for 12 months and $50 for 24 months. Visitors can get a $5 discount on the 12-month permit for the month of December as part of Oregon State Parks annual sale.
Only 25 of the more than 250 Oregon State Parks currently require a day-use parking permit. The fee helps pay for operations and maintenance.
The release said the day-use parking fee increase was announced in September along with increases in reservation and camping fees as part of an ongoing effort to help keep pace with rising costs. The last parking fee increase was more than 15 years ago.
OPRD has three main sources of funding: a little less than half comes from constitutionally dedicated lottery funds, about 15 percent comes from recreational vehicle license plate fees, and roughly 35 percent comes from park fees from visitors. OPRD is not funded by taxes.
OPRD will continue to explore options in the future that reduce cost as a barrier while earning needed revenue to maintain Oregon State Parks and manage congestion.
