Welcome to Landscape Alpha Testing,
Thanks for participating!
Until a formal tutorial is coded, this document will provide some background and clarify how to play the game.
Background:
· Welcome, you are a surrogate of a god encroaching on new lands! However, another god seeks to lay claim on what is rightfully yours. You will use your influence on the world, permitted to you by your god, through your followers and influence on the natural order of things to cease this arrogant god’s pursuit and emerge victorious.
· Each god has a Temple that is its conduit of power onto the lands at large. Once your Temple is destroyed, your influence is removed from the lands, and you lose the battle! Your goal is to destroy the enemy's temple before your own is taken out!
Cards:
Deckbuilding
You can build a deck in the Deck Builder: Cards can be added by the plus arrow, and you can have up to 3 copies of any card. The minimum deck size to play is 39 cards of any combination of card types.
Now, onto the game itself:
Gameplay:
This shows the prompt, your deck, hand, and mana. The small red x to the upper right is the surrender button.
· The start of the game will go as follows.
Your initial hand is automatically drawn. At the moment there is no mulligan, but this is being considered, so please let us know if you think there should be in our feedback channels! (Expanded below).
Next, you will select your tribute you wish to start with. It is typically smart to pick the tribute that is used within your deck, especially for the low-cost cards. You have the option to start with one tribute. While each tribute has the same base value, the units, buildings, and spells all reflect the values behind the core elements! To select your tribute you wish to start with, click on its symbol.
The left number represents your total mana. Your mana accrues over time, and you do not lose it as turns pass. The right number is the amount of mana you will gain at the start of your next turn. And there you go! You just started your battle for the lands themselves.
To pay for a card, select a card, then select a legal space to play it (typically outlined by white). The colored tribute will be paid for automatically, but you will have to select which tribute you wish to use to pay for the white (unbound) cost. This selection will be done the same way you selected mana you wished to start with. You are unable to select a card you cannot pay for.
Once you are finished with your turn, click the end turn button at the bottom left, and now your opponent goes!
As the game goes on, you will earn more mana as turns pass. The turn in which you will gain an additional choice is shown to the upper right of the board.
Movement and Actions
Movement
A unit can move a number of lands equal to its speed value. Movement can be manipulated, and if additional movement is given after moving, the unit can still move after. As you move, the value at the bottom of the hexagonal card tooltip decreases. Units cannot move through spaces occupied by buildings or units, and must move around them. They cannot move through the blocking entity.
Actions
A unit has a single action a turn. If it still has its action, it appears as gray. If it has already used its action, it is instead green. There are several types of actions:
Neutral Objectives
There are neutral objectives your units can take control of to aid in your conquest of these lands. Each objective only needs a unit to be adjacent, and a single objective can be used by both players at the same time (if both have units adjacent to it!)
·
Analyzing a card:
A card can be analyzed by right clicking it. A large window will open, showing all information about the card, as well as any statuses that has occurred to it after playing. Keywords are also explained in this window.
Land Effects:
The lands themselves challenge your units, but they can also be used to your advantage. One of the main aspects of this game is using the lands to your advantage. Three of the lands provide inherent detriments, while three can be taken advantage of if the units have the right skills. Lands can be right clicked to see their effect.
The three lands with detrimental effects:
Lands can be used by certain cards to gain benefits or become more powerful. Furthermore, there are keywords that can take advantage of the lands. This is covered in the next section.
Landscaping and Landwalking
While the other keywords can be found in the appendix, this will be discussed due to it being a unique aspect of our game.
Swampwalk: The unit gains Veiled
Forestwalk: The unit gains Evasive
Plainswalk: This unit gains +1 movement for the turn.
Feedback
Thank you for participating in this alpha! Unfortunately, we are not as infallible as the roles we play while we are dueling for our place controlling the lands. We make mistakes, and some of our designs are, dare I say it, wrong. If you believe we made mistakes, you run into any bugs, or you want to be the best and leave us some compliments, please give feedback! Currently we run a Discord that has a channel for feedback. We will also roll out some other options once we stop being lazy. But please let us know what you do and don't like, so we can continue to improve this passion project!
Appendix:
Keywords and Effect Types:
· Play: Happens when the entity enters the battlefield
· Finale: Happens when the unit dies
· Exhaust: Rather than attack, you may click your unit and exhaust it using the prompt.
· Start of Turn: Gain the effect at the start of your turn
· End of turn: Gain the effect at the end of your turn
· Flying: Able to move over units rather than only around.
· Demolish X: Deal X additional damage to buildings when the unit attacks a building. This also applies to the Temple
· Evasive: Take half-damage (rounded-up) from ranged attacks (any attack from an entity farther than 1 land away).
· Mobile: You may move the unit when played, and the unit may move after building, being exhausted, or attacking.
· Pacifist: Cannot attack enemy units. Can still attack buildings.
· Intimidate X: Adjacent enemy units have -X Attack
· Quick Attack: While attacking (not defending) you deal damage before the enemy (if this kills the enemy, you don’t take any damage back!)
· Support X: Friendly units get +X/+X if adjacent to the unit with Support.
· Tough: Reduce all damage taken from any source by 1 (If you take 3 damage, you instead take 2. If you take 2 twice, you would instead take 1 twice).
· Rage: Gain the effect on the card when the unit is injured by nonlethal damage.
· Weaken: If you would attack and deal damage, you instead permanently give the enemy -X/-X, where X is your attack.
· X walk: Turn a land into X land when the unit moves into the land.
