Dear Students and Parents,
It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we announce the upcoming season for the North Lincoln Percussion! This ensemble is dedicated to providing the students of North Lincoln High School with the highest level of musical instruction, performance opportunities, and teamwork. North Lincoln Percussion functions as the indoor component to the marching band.
What is Winter Percussion?
Winter percussion ensembles function similar to the drumline (battery) and pit (front ensemble) found in most high school marching bands. They learn music and drill just like a marching band, but perform their shows on a special tarp in a gymnasium. Groups compete in different circuits based on resources and ability, and are grouped in “classes” based on similar criteria. More importantly, winter percussion units provide students the opportunity to focus on percussion-related techniques.
Requirements of membership
In order to be qualified for NLP membership, students must be a current, active member of the NL Band Program and be in good standing both socially and financially. Students who are not enrolled in a band course should consult with Mr. Still. Middle school students who have participated in the high school marching band are eligible, but must be approved by both their middle school director and high school director. All NLP members should be familiar with fundamental musical notation and rhythms. Because this group is a competitive unit, there is simply not enough time to teach students to read basic music. Members must be at all rehearsals unless otherwise excused for emergency/medical reason.
Members will be asked to do video assignments throughout the season to check on individual progress and hold themselves accountable for knowing music/visuals. Members will be given plenty of advanced notice of due date and assignment after which will be up to member to get it completed and turned in on time. These videos are a valuable tool for members to see progress, hear themselves and know what they need to continue to work on outside of rehearsal
Auditions will be held on Monday, November 19th from 4:00-5:30 at NLHS. The $100 deposit is due at this time for all students who earn a spot in the line. There will be two practice/clinic sessions prior to auditions on November 8th from 4:00-6:00pm and November 15th from 5:30-7:30pm. Students are encouraged to attend these training days to get the most of instruction! The auditions are formal playing auditions… students will play a variety of instruments in an ensemble setting and placed according to talent and need of the ensemble. Students who are offered a spot will be given a contract to sign. Parents who may have questions about the program are asked to contact the Director prior to auditions. All audition results are made by Christyl Barber, Percussion Director, and are final.
Rehearsals and Transportation
The North Lincoln Percussion (NLP) will rehearse on Tuesdays from 4:00-7:00 pm and Thursdays 5:30 - 8:30pm during the months of December through March. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from rehearsals. An activity bus will provide transportation on competition days.
Fees and Fundraising
Lincoln County Schools does not provide any funding for a group of this nature, and because of the need to hire percussion writers and staff, there will be a fee of $300, and a uniform fee ($80-$120) to be paid in installments throughout the season. The fee can be broken down in installments due on the dates below:
$100 due at the audition (November 19) – due upon being offered a spot in the ensemble and allows us to pay required entry fees for competitions
$100 due at the Camp weekend on Saturday, December 15
$100 due at Camp weekend on Saturday, January 19th
Uniform fees will be due by the first show
Payments are due on these dates unless you have spoken with the director prior to the date. You will have a one week grace period for all payments.
We have a group fundraiser selling Krispy Kreme Donuts to offset expenses. INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING OPTIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE!
Schedule and Travel
NLP will be participating in the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA), a competitive circuit consisting of schools and independent units from North Carolina and South Carolina. We will be attending four shows as well as circuit championships. Championship weekend will be held Sunday, March 24th at Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, SC. An official schedule is included in this letter. All rehearsals and performances are mandatory for membership; failure to adhere to the schedule and/or excessive absences will result in expulsion from the group WITHOUT tuition refunds.
We are very fortunate to offer this ensemble to the students of North Lincoln High School and that each administration is in support of this organization. We hope that this group will promote a safe and accepting environment for our young percussionists, and offer our band students another performance opportunity. All members are expected to act in a dignified and professional manner at all times while traveling and performing with the group. It is important to remember that each student represents themselves, their family and friends, the North Lincoln Band of Knights and Lincoln County Schools. Students who cannot act in a mature manner and make wise decisions will be dealt with by the directors, and ultimately dropped from the group WITHOUT refunds.
We hope that this experience will be an enjoyable one for all students, parents, directors and staff! We hope to see you out cheering on the North Lincoln Percussion!
