Dear Members of the Maynard School Community,
As we end the first week of having our K - 5 students back full time, I am excited to share it was a successful week. Students were excited to be back in school with their friends and teachers for full days, enjoying time in class, in the GM cafeteria, the Fowler School cafeteria and auditorium, and outside for recess/mask breaks. One of the noticeable changes is that most classes were off of their screens for much of the school day. Walking through the buildings, the sound of school has returned, the chatter among students, questions between classmates, teachers, paraprofessionals and others is heard. The students in the building and those remaining remote are certainly participating in so many ways. On Friday, Principal Rouleau and I had the opportunity to chat with the students in Mrs. McPhail’s third grade remote class, as they had 100% attendance for the entire week. Congratulations to all for a job well done!
At the high school we are very proud that several Maynard graduates in the past two years have been awarded the Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas. We are offering this opportunity again this year and hope that it will become a traditional part of our high school graduation ceremony. The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduates who demonstrate they can speak, listen, read, and write proficiently in English and another language by high school graduation. The other language does not need to have been learned at school and includes American Sign Language. This is an honor awarded by the state of Massachusetts, and an insignia that is attached to the high school diploma.
In order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, students must demonstrate proficiency in English and an additional language. Proficiency in English is generally determined by attaining a proficient score on the MCAS while proficiency in languages other than English is determined by a state approved assessment in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the additional language. The additional language test is administered at Maynard High School at no cost to the student.
By offering the Seal of Biliteracy to our students, we hope to honor Maynard’s multilingual student community and encourage more students to pursue world language proficiency. Multilingualism is a critical twenty-first century skill that recipients of the Seal of Biliteracy can highlight in both college and job applications.
Additionally, we are moving forward with plans for the 2021 prom for our students. This decision was made after reviewing the guidance from DESE and DPH, the current health data for Maynard, the venue’s protocols, and discussions with our health agent. Please continue to maintain the current health and safety protocols to stay healthy, as that will allow us to continue on this pathway and hold the 2021 prom.
Currently, EXCEL is not able to put programming together at this time. We are working on a request for proposals so that in the future before and after school care will be an opportunity for families. However, the BGCAV is reopening for their summer programs and registration is currently underway. We are excited that we are partnering with the Boys and Girls Club this year and will have enrichment activity stations at camp each week. These stations will focus on project based learning experiences related to the camp theme of the week! Families can register by going to the website at www.bgcav.org.

Clearly the students are engaged in their learning both in person and remotely. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather this weekend. One more week of school, then April vacation will be here!
Stay healthy and safe,
