Module 8: Variables

Storing and Using Information as Variables

Theme:  STEM

Purpose: Students will learn to create variables and store values as variables to use them in mathematical calculations, expressions, and drawing geometric shapes.

Lesson Goals: I can...

  • identify variables in code.
  • create and assign values to new variables.
  • make calculations using variables.
  • output the value stored in a variable.
  • use variables as inputs to blocks.

Activity 1: Calculating Area and Perimeter

Students explore how variables can be used in numerical calculations by modifying a program and adding a calculation for perimeter.

Activity 2: Drawing Geometric Shapes

Students use variables as inputs (arguments) to blocks to draw geometric shapes.

Activity 3:

Students create a new project that uses variables in a manner of their choice.
