Greetings CLAS Families                                                                                                                      May 21st, 2023

IT’S THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL!

It has been a long year yet we are down to the last 5 days of school. We want to sincerely thank our parents, families, guardians and caregivers for all of the support that you have given the school.  There are so many ups and downs and ins and outs to the school year.  The finish line is now in sight.

We would like to say thank you for trusting us with your most precious cargo. As students have entered our doors all year long, guardianship transfers from you to the school and back again.  We are a part of your village and we sincerely appreciate you for choosing our school.

Monday 8th grade will be going to Cedar Point on a field trip and 5th grade will be going to the Science Center downtown.

Promotion rehearsal for all 8th grade students will be on Thursday, May 25th in the auditorium.

Field Day is This Wednesday, May 24th, 2023.  We would greatly appreciate any parent volunteers to assist with Field day activities. Please contact the front office if you are available to help.

As the year comes to a close, students will still need to meet school expectations with behaviors. As always students will be held accountable for any choices that fall outside of our school culture norms. Please have conversations with scholars about making choices that will not disappoint you at home. The end of the year is always a time when students feel that the bar of expectation should be lowered or they should be allowed to get away with things because it’s the end of the year.

On Repeat:

Thank you to all the families that have returned any tech item that has been used at home this school year. We are still collecting tech items and greatly appreciate you for bringing them back to school. As a reminder,  there will be a penalty fee associated with any item that is not returned to the school. Here is a list of the items we are collecting as well as the fee if the item is not returned to the school. ($35 for missing chromebooks, $20 for missing hotspots, $10 for missing chargers, ) Students can continue to return tech items to their homeroom/crew teachers when they arrive at school.

Thank you for your support throughout this school year.

Huge shout out to all of the wonderful women who hold down the fort as mothers! We humbly salute you on this day. Though many of you still may not get a break on Mother’s Day, we are graciously appreciative for the role you play in the lives of your loved ones and many more. Thank you!

iReady for another round of testing? See what I did there? This week we are wrapping testing up with iReady testing for Math and Reading. Monday May 15th, we start with Reading. Tuesday May 16th will be math. The remainder of the week students will be able to make up Reading or Math on the 17th and 18th. Please make sure that all scholars arrive on time to school and are prepared for testing.

Thank you to all the families that have returned any tech item that has been used at home this school year. We are still collecting tech items and greatly appreciate you for bringing them back to school. As a reminder,  there will be a penalty fee associated with any item that is not returned to the school. Saturday May 13th (Yesterday), we held our 2nd annual 8th grade Dance at Sadie’s Social Complex. Our student came dressed in their finest formal attire, ate, and danced the night away. Thank you to the amazing staff at Sadie’s Social Complex for being gracious hosts.

This week marks our last 4 day week of the school year. There is no school on Friday May 19th due to the last Professional Development day for staff.  We are down to the last two weeks of school. There are 9 days remaining between this week and next week. Students have already begun to get squirrely as we get closer to the last day of school. Please remind your scholars to continue to meet school expectations, follow directions and make positive choices in school. Scholars will continue to be held accountable for actions that harm the school's culture and or do not meet expectations.

Greetings CLAS Families,                                                                                      May 7th, 2023

Aside from a little rain, we hope you were able to get out and enjoy the weather we had this weekend. Now yet again we are back to another school and work week. This week is a 5 day week. School is open on Friday May 12th.

This week is TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK! Please feel free to express your appreciation to our teachers, staff and administrators this week. It truly goes a long way to the recipient of any thing a student may bring in to say thank you and I appreciate you for all that you’ve done. The education field can feel like a thankless profession. This week families can show just how much they appreciate our school staff!

Students get a break from testing this week. We appreciate families for assisting the school in getting students prepared for testing. Our last round of testing for the year will continue next week with iReady testing for Math and Reading. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we push through the last phase of testing.

We are still seeking student feedback! We want to hear from our scholars and we are asking them to complete the Scholar Voice Survey. This survey will be sent to their student GMAIL account and will be open from May 1st - May 12th. This is an opportunity for scholars to let their voice be heard.

With 14 school days remaining, students sometimes see the end of the year as a time to act out. Students will continue to be held accountable for any choices they make that harm the culture and learning environment of our school.

Thank you for your support and see below all upcoming events for the remainder of the year.

Greetings CLAS Families,                                                                        April 30th, 2023

This Monday is May the 1st! We are officially in the last days of the school year. We hope you enjoyed your weekend. Here are a few important things         for this week and the remainder of the year.

Tomorrow, May 1st,  we are revving up the technology collection engine. Families can begin the process of returning any tech item scholars may have used at home. There will be a penalty fee associated with any item that is not returned to the school. Here is a list of the items we are collecting as well as the fee if the item is not returned to the school. ($35 for missing chromebooks, $20 for missing hotspots, $10 for missing chargers, ) Students can begin to return tech items to their homeroom/crew teachers when they arrive at school.

This week GRADES 5 AND 8 ONLY will be taking the Science portion of the Ohio State Test. This test will be administered May 1st through May 4th of this week. Please make sure students are on-time as testing will begin promptly in the morning.

We are seeking student feedback! We want to hear from our scholars and we are asking them to complete the Scholar Voice Survey. This survey will be sent to their student GMAIL account and will be open from May 1st - May 12th. This is an opportunity for scholars to let their voice be heard.

As we wind down the year, please encourage scholars to ensure their behavior meets school expectations.  This is the time of year when students sometimes push the limits on appropriate and respectable school behaviors. Disrespect towards staff and students, social media activity that enters school, and an unwillingness to adhere to school policy are all actions that harm our school culture.

All scholars will be held accountable for any harmful behavior choices.

SCHOOL IS CLOSED THIS FRIDAY MAY 5TH FOR A  STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY.

Greetings CLAS Families,                                                                          April 23rd, 2023

Another weekend is in the books with another school and work week just hours away. Where does the time go right? Here’s what's on the agenda  for school this week.

Students will be taking the MATH portion of the OST (Ohio State Test) this week. This test will be administered on Tuesday April 25th and Wednesday April 26th. Please make sure that all scholars adhere to the same testing preparation practices as last week. State testing expectations differ from that of regular academic content testing.  The state of Ohio requires the testing environment to  be silent at all times as well as device free.

Last week we noticed that quite a few students experienced test anxiety during the test. Please help build up your scholars' confidence with “I can” statements today, tonight and tomorrow morning prior to arriving at school for testing. This will go a long way to boost their mental capacity to push through tough testing moments.

As  a reminder, student behavior should meet expectations after testing is over for the remainder of the school day. This includes meeting classroom and schoolwide expectations. We recognize that the process of testing can be draining. This does not mean that students will not be held accountable for their behavior and the choices they make.

Please monitor and have serious conversations with your scholar about their activity on social media.  We have been experiencing a major increase in social media behavior that has disrupted our school culture.  We usually find out about it after it has caused an issue in school. Any behavior stemming from social media that disrupts our school culture can lead to a school consequence.

Thank you for your support and see below all upcoming events for the remainder of the year.

This week we are beginning testing and scholars  will be taking the ELA or Reading portion of the OST (Ohio State Test). These test will be given on Tuesday April 18th, and Wednesday April 19th,

The following are important  practices for scholar success during testing days:

Greetings CLAS Families,                                                                                3/26/23

We hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break, yet now it’s back to business. The school year is winding down and we are in the final stretch. This week is scheduled to be a full 5 day week. There are a lot of things packed into these last 2 months of school. As students return tomorrow, they will participate in school and classroom culture resets. Please remind students to meet our school expectations by being willing to receive direction and instruction and  treating staff and students with respect.

Students typically return to school after an extended break very tired. Please make sure that students get the rest they need to perform at their best. Students should not be on or have their phones out unless given permission by a teacher or administrator.  Hats and Hoods should not be worn as they make it difficult to readily identify students. Headphones are for classroom use only and should not be worn outside of the classroom.

Thank you for your continued support. Let’s make it a Great Week! Stay Classy CLAS!

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                2/26/23

We have one important staffing update to share. Mr. Ryder is unfortunately stepping away from the classroom for the remainder of the year - we will miss him dearly and thank him for all he has done for CLAS. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward! As I mentioned in the last newsletter, Ms. Ellis is taking over as the 8th grade History teacher beginning on Wednesday, March 1st. We will be working hard to ensure a smooth transition for our scholars!

Last Day of School - 8th Grade Graduation (10 AM - 12 PM at CLAS Auditorium, Reception to Follow).

SCHOLAR SURVEY RESULTS:

71% of scholars completed our most recent scholar survey and the results were illuminating! 81% of scholars feel cared for (emotional needs met and good relationships with teachers) but only 67% of scholars feel a sense of belonging and connectedness (someone they can openly talk to, good relationships with peers and opportunities to share about themselves in the school community). As a result, we will more strongly focus on belonging and connectedness throughout the rest of the year. By Friday, March 17, 2023, the admin team will conduct three focus groups (5th, 6th and 7th grade) allowing scholars to share what changes they would like to see made next school year in addition to providing reasons why connectedness and belonging is a growth area for our school. The admin team will communicate details once they are finalized. Have ideas to share? Reach out to Mrs. Terrell, Mr. Gamble, or Mrs. Rogoff!

PLAY-FIGHTING: please remind your scholars that play-fighting is not permitted at CLAS. It can cause disruptions to the learning environment and result in serious injuries. Scholars must keep their hands to themselves at all times while at school. Failure to comply will result in consequences!

Re-enrollment CONTINUES! If you have not re-enrolled, please do so by clicking HERE - this is a much simpler version of the re-enrollment form.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call the front office!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Introducing… PEERS IN MOTION!

The administration has some exciting news we would like to share! We are starting an initiative that encourages student growth, connectedness, and leadership between older and younger scholars. Scholars in the 7th and 8th grade will be able to give advice to students in 5th and 6th grade about peer interactions and better decision making based on their positive and responsible experiences from their time in 5th and 6th grade years. Participating students have been selected by administration and  coached by the school counselor to give advice that enhances our school culture and peer relationships. The program is called Peers in Motion and it will begin this week!  If you do not want your student participating in this program, please send an email to Synita Brazil at sbrazil@breakthroughschools.org or inform the principal, Emily Rogoff. Again, we are truly excited about this opportunity and look forward to students having a great experience sharing information with one another that ultimately will have a wonderful impact on our school!

Reminder of Important School Culture Update: 3 Strike Rule

Scholars who receive three -20s during the week will receive a day of In School Suspension either that day or the following day (this could end up taking place on Monday of the following week). The slate will wipe clean each week.

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                1/16/23

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day! I hope you are getting some time for rest and reflection as we honor Dr. King’s legacy. At CLAS we strive to teach our young people what it means to speak truth to power and fight for justice each and every day. We have an amazing team of educators who are committed to instilling these values in our scholars and we thank you for your continued partnership.

It’s hard to believe that it is already mid January! If you didn’t know, I’ll be heading out on maternity leave around Spring Break through the end of the year to give birth to a baby boy! I’ll keep you updated with pictures, of course 😀.

We’ve been having tremendous fun at our most recent celebrations: the Talent Show and the Staff vs. Scholar Basketball game (where the grown ups dominated the kids!) If you aren’t following us on Instagram make sure you find clas_lions and follow us today to stay tuned in to all the joy at our school!

Important School Culture Update: 3 Strike Rule

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                        1/8/23

Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed your break with your loved ones and had a safe and joyous holiday season. We loved ending our 2022 school year with a spirit week and a fantastic talent show.  We are so excited to welcome scholars back on Tuesday, Jan 10th (on Monday the 9th we have a professional development day).

Before we went on break, scholars took their iReady mid year diagnostics. We are SO PROUD of the growth that we are seeing at this mid-year point - many scholars won dress down passes for their hard work so please believe your scholar if they show you a dress down pass and say they can dress out of uniform.

We also have a big staffing update - Mr. Price unfortunately had to depart from his role at CLAS due to health issues, but we have a new 7th grade science teacher beginning this week. Jazmyne Maxwell comes to us with over nearly 15 years of teaching experience - 5 in Los Angeles, CA and 9 in Japan! She is so thrilled to become a part of our team and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome her on board.

Free Baby Supplies: Pregnant with Possibilities Resource Center will distribute essential baby items to families in need on Thursday, January 12 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Supplies are limited and all families must register. Items that will be supplied are the following: Diapers - Newborn to Size 6, Wipes, Baby Food, Baby Formula

Registration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/janurary-2023-diaper-distribution-tickets-490613376817?fbclid=IwAR3i97BAhKP9dVKMxm3NNWXwWddOiKKT3AoHg-pvdxuqF6RbWIR3f2YGK2s

Dear CLAS Families                                                                                         12/4/22

8th grade is closed tomorrow, 12/5. We are so sorry for the inconvenience caused by closing 8th grade tomorrow, December 5th. Our staff is experiencing waves of illness and we hope that they can recover so that we can be back in person on Tuesday the 6th. I’ll keep you updated.

iReady Testing begins on Dec 12th! ELA testing will be on Monday (12/12), Math will be on Tuesday (12/13) and makeups will be the rest of the week. iReady is hugely important for us to measure scholar growth and is IMPERATIVE for 8th graders to get into selective high schools!

Arrival Time: Please note that doors open at 7:35 and we are not liable for supervising scholars outside prior to that time. As the temperature drops, please help us keep scholars safe and warm by waiting until 7:35 to drop scholars off.

Uniforms: We have noticed an uptick in scholars not in uniform. Deans of Culture will be reaching out to families regarding this issue to see how we can support getting your scholars to school in the appropriate attire!

Cell Phones/AirPods/Apple Watches: Our weekly reminder that the school is not liable for damaged, stolen or lost property and that scholars are expected to be responsible for their technology on school grounds.

ATTENTION 8th Grade! The CMSD High School Portal is OPEN! Check out this website for more information and contact Lori Lawson at llawson@breakthroughschools.org with any questions!

ADDITION OF NEW ARRIVAL DOOR STARTING THIS MONDAY (11/28): to prepare for the snow banks that have slowed down arrival in the past, we are opening up a second arrival door for all families from 7:35-7:55 - the cafeteria doors! All scholars in grades k-8 can now be dropped off at either the main entrance or the cafeteria doors. Scholars will still transition to class in a similar way, this just allows us to speed up traffic in advance of any heavy snow! Please note, the cafeteria doors will close at 7:55 because all tardy scholars must enter through the main entrance to be marked present.

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                11/20/22

Social Media Drama: we have been hit with a tsunami of social media drama in the past couple of weeks. Platforms like Discord, Instagram and Text have been a HUGE issue at CLAS. One big problem is that scholars are sharing account passwords and logging into each other’s accounts. This is an issue because the consequence falls on the scholar whose account it is - whether they posted it or not! Please communicate with your scholars that they should change their passwords IMMEDIATELY and be sure that you are checking what they are posting on these sites at least once a week. You would be shocked at the things our kids are saying to each other! Remember, we DO hold scholars accountable for what they post - and we are definitely suspending AND expelling scholars for posting dangerous and harmful things online! Questions? Concerns? Reach out to us so we can help you address this with your scholars!

On Repeat: Cell Phones and other tech have been getting lost/stolen/misplaced at CLAS. While we take safety and security precautions seriously and investigate all stolen items, we are also not liable for any missing technology. Scholars must be aware that bringing their phones/airpods/apple watches to school is a big risk and that the school is not responsible for these items! Scholars CAN choose to lock items up each day in a teacher lock box OR they can leave these items at home, but we cannot assume any liability for anything that happens to these items. Please remind your scholar to be VERY careful with their expensive electronics at school.

6th Grade Staffing Change:

Due to personal reasons, Mr. Kyle Hennig will no longer continue as our sixth grade History teacher at Citizens Leadership Academy Southeast. We are grateful to Mr. Hennig for his contributions to CLAS during his time here, and we wish him all the best in the future.

Our top priority is ensuring that our scholars have an excellent educational experience. To that end, Mr. Michael Cottingham, our Title 1 Reading teacher, will be taking over as the long-term replacement for sixth grade History. We are incredibly excited to have Mr. Cottingham in this capacity and we have full faith in his ability to create a seamless transition for our scholars! Please reach out to me with any questions regarding this change. Mr. Cottingham will be reaching out to all of his Crew families this week to introduce himself!

I hope you are enjoying these warm autumn days! See below for a list of upcoming events and information!

What is DEAR?! DEAR stands for Drop Everything and Read! We hold at least 45 minutes weekly sacred for silent, sustained DEAR time. Your scholar should ALWAYS have an independent reading book with them - in school and out of school! They can check one out from our school library or from the Cleveland Public Library, which is completely free to join! Studies show that even just 10 minutes a day of silent reading can boost comprehension and vocabulary scores, which are essential for your scholar’s future success!

Fall Break + Conferences: Mark your calendars! We are out of school from October 10th-14th for Fall Break. We will have conferences on Nov 7th + 8th (times are still TBD!).

Science + Math Tutoring After School

Uniforms/Tardies/Unprepareds

Scholars will continue receiving -4 consequences for not being in dress code or uniform this week. Furthermore, we will begin issuing -4s for scholars that are tardy or unprepared for class (meaning they forgot something in their locker or are lacking urgency in moving to their classroom). Please remind your scholar that every minute of class-time is precious and cannot be wasted!

Kickboard Paycheck

Kickboard paychecks are sent home each Monday and must be signed and returned on Tuesdays for a grade. +4s are listed on the left and -4s or -20s are listed on the right hand column. Reach out to your Crew teacher with questions or concerns!

Dear CLAS Families                                                                                 9/11/22

We were saddened to have to close down the 6th grade on Friday due to staffing shortages. Luckily, we are back open to all grades on Monday! Please read below for lots of information regarding CLAS!

iReady Reports

We hope you received the iReady Report that we passed out to scholars on Friday afternoon (6th grade will receive theirs on Monday). If you need another copy of their math and reading scores, please let your scholar’s teacher know and they can email you a digital copy or send home another hard copy.

Science + Math Tutoring After School

Scholars are now engaging in their grade level curriculum, which means they will start to come home with homework occasionally or tests/quizzes to study for! Luckily, STEM tutoring with our Hawken High School Students will begin this Tuesday after school from 3:45 to 5 PM. If you’d like to sign up, please click HERE and see the flyer!

Uniforms

Scholars will now begin receiving -4 consequences for not being in dress cod or uniform this week. Please ensure your scholar leaves for school each morning in the appropriate clothing and shoes. Reach out to the main office if you need assistance in purchasing uniform clothes.

New Scholar Assembly

On Monday at 8:15 AM we will host an assembly to welcome all new scholars to CLAS for the 22-23 school year. We will be reviewing schoolwide expectations and the student Code of Conduct to help these scholars become acclimated to our environment.

Kickboard Paycheck

Kickboard paychecks are sent home each Monday and must be signed and returned on Tuesdays for a grade. These paychecks help you understand how your scholar is doing each week behaviorally. As a reminder, scholars begin the week with $80 in their CLAS CASH Account, and earn +4s or -4s for their choices.

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                9/4/22

We are finished with week 2 and with iReady testing! Scholars now know where they are in terms of reading and math achievement, and you’ll receive a copy of their scores this week. See below for other updates and important information!

Dismissal

We want to say thank you again for your help in making dismissal move quickly this past week! With Dismissal starting at 3:15, we clear out the line by 3:40. Key takeaways are:

  1. Families staying in their cars
  2. Using the yellow/purple card system (BE SURE to write your scholar(s) name and grade on the card so we can easily read it)
  3. Cars moving up when a car pulls off
  4. Not cutting in the dismissal line (waiting for security to wave you on)
  5. Calling the school before 2:30 for dismissal changes
  6. Giving grace

Attendance <Reminder>

Attendance is crucial to your child's learning and their ability to build life altering relationships within the school community. The State of Ohio also has laws that protect your child's learning found under the House Bill 410. Coming in late, leaving early and not coming in at all builds hours towards Truancy Laws. Please make sure your child comes to school and on time each and every day.

Uniforms:

Uniforms are required every day unless a grade level has won a dress down day on the last day of the week. We know that SchoolBelles has some backorders, but be sure to still put in your order. In the meantime as your order comes in, wear our school uniform pants and a solid color polo.

Upcoming Dates:

Cheerleading:

The cheerleading list was posted on Friday! Scholars should know if they made the team or not. If they are unsure, they can check the list outside of Room 214. We will inform you when Cheerleading practice begins!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at erogoff@breakthroughschools.org or contact the school at (216) 586-3887.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                                 8/28/22

What a FANTASTIC first week of school! We learned a ton about each other, our routines and procedures, battled in tug of war for the spirit stick, and ended the week with an ice cream social!

Kickboard: Scholars are quickly re-adjusting to school expectations and are earning tons of +4s throughout the day. On Monday, you’ll receive a print out of their weekly paycheck so that you can get a comprehensive overview of their behavior during the first week of school. Please note, you must sign this paycheck and have your scholar bring it to school on Tuesday for a Crew grade.

Scholars start the week with $80 in CLAS CASH and must earn $88 by the end of the week to make it to Friday Celebration. If your scholar ends up in reflection, you should receive a phone call explaining why.

Arrival + Dismissal: As we anticipated, traffic was delayed this week as we adjusted to our new dismissal procedures. We have a feeling that wait times will speed up dramatically this week and appreciate your patience!

As a reminder, please stay in your car, and don’t call your scholar to come outside. Doing so drastically slows down our dismissal process. Also, all dismissal changes need to be made to the front office no later than 2:30pm. Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Uniforms: We are loving seeing our scholars in their full uniforms each day. If your uniforms are still on backorder, we are allowing scholars to attend school in a solid color polo. Each week, one grade of scholars will earn a dress down day based on their behavior during lunch throughout the week. I’ll announce the winner to the kids every Wednesday or Thursday at 2 PM and then send a Remind message regarding the winner that evening. Otherwise, your scholar should still remain in uniform on Friday.

iReady Diagnostics: We will be starting our fall iReady diagnostic assessments. iReady is an online program that helps us to see your child’s strengths and areas of growth. We then use this information to help drive our individualized instruction during acceleration learning time. We are so excited to see what our scholars already know coming into this year and how much they’ve grown at the end of this year. Once we have all of our assessments completed, we will send out a letter to you outlining all of their areas of strengths and growth.

Below is the letter that was sent home to families regarding the state tests. Remember, these tests are TIMED and are VERY IMPORTANT for your scholar and for our school. Attendance is critical for these testing dates. If you anticipate any absences, please reach out to Mrs. Rogoff ASAP.

Dear Families,

Springtime is here which means Ohio State Tests are rapidly approaching. Remember that these tests are imperative for  your scholar, and help us understand their academic strengths and weaknesses. See below for more information about the upcoming tests:

Monday, April 11th                 ELA Part 1

Tuesday, April 12th                  ELA Part 2

Tuesday, April 26th                    Math Part 1

Wednesday, April 27th        Math Part 2

Monday, May 2nd                 Science Part 1 (5th and 8th grade only)

Tuesday, May 3rd                 Science Part 2 (5th and 8th grade only)

Please mark your calendar!

To make testing as successful as possible, we recommend that you have your child take a few practice OST tests. These tests are available on this website:  https://oh-ost.portal.cambiumast.com/families.html

and look very similar to the tests they will be taking in April. Once you’ve reached the website, click “Practice Test”, then “Sign In”, select the grade and then either ELA, Math, or Science.

We also recommend that your child gets a good night’s sleep prior to testing days and arrives at school on time, 8:00 at the latest.  We will be serving a hot breakfast to students on testing days.

Because you are so important in your child’s life, we thought it would help your child to hear from you right before he/she takes the test.  Please take a few moments to write your child a motivational letter that we will give to your child before the reading test begins.  The letter can be as long or as short as you would like.  Let your child know that you love her/him, that you are proud of him/her, and that you know she/he will do well if she/he uses everything she/he has been taught.  Feel free to add anything else that you believe will encourage your son/daughter.  Past experience tells us that children who get these letters are thrilled.  Children who do not get a letter from home are disappointed.  The school staff will write them a letter, but they are not as excited as they would be if their letter came from home.

After you write your letter, please seal it in an envelope with your child’s name on the front.  Ask your child to give it to her/his homeroom teacher.  Please send the letter to school ahead of time so we can ensure every student has a special letter from a parent or staff member.

Thank you in advance for helping to motivate your child to do his/her best work on Ohio’s Assessments!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 216-586-3887.

Thank you,

Mrs. Rogoff

Principal of CLAS

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                January 17th, 2022

I hope this newsletter finds you warm and safe as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I could not be prouder or more honored to work for a school community that strives to live out the Reverend's words each and every day. This year has not been easy or traditional, but we continue to walk (and sometimes crawl) into the unknown so that one day, our children may run.

There are many announcements in our newsletter today:

This Week’s Schedule: We are remote this week and following the same Zoom schedule + links this Tues-Thursday. There is one SCHEDULE CHANGE: This Friday the 21st, scholars will go to Mrs. Rogoff’s Zoom Room at 8 am but then will complete their work independently for the rest of the day. This will allow all teachers to come into the building and prepare for our in person return on the 24th.

iReady: All scholars are expected to complete 30 minutes of math iReady and 30 minutes of reading iReady on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They should pass 2 reading lessons and 2 math lessons by Friday at 4 PM. This is for an ELA and math grade.

Trimester 2 ends on February 11th, which means there are only four weeks left in the Trimester! Parent teacher conferences will be held on March 8th.

8th grade high school applications are nearly due! Scholars are encouraged to apply to 3 CMSD schools in addition to any private schools as a backup. Please attend a visit from Davis Maritime & Aerospace High School this Wednesday in www.zoom.us/my/msrogoff. Reach out to Reggie Shumpert at rshumpert@theprepschools.org or Amber Hughes at ahughes@casoutheast.org if your scholar needs copies of their transcripts and iReady scores.

School Uniforms: scholars must return to school on January 24th in their school uniforms. Please check that they are wearing school pants, shirts, and no hats, hoods, or slides. We will call families to drop off uniform clothes if scholars are not wearing them.

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                        January 9th, 2022

We miss seeing your scholars in person but hope that you are all safe and healthy at home.

We will be remote through January 21st and will return in-person on January 24th, 2022.

There is NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 14TH

Our remote schedule this Monday through Thursday will continue to be live, synchronous classes from 8 am to 1:40 pm, with asynchronous time for iReady, tutoring, and homework from 1:40 to 3:30.

During this afternoon time, our expectation is that scholars are completing…

Scholars are receiving a daily grade in ELA and Math for completing their iReady assignments and will receive 0s if they are not attempting to complete their iReady assignments!

If you are having any technical issues this week, please call the Virtual Call Center at 216-539-2100.

We still have Chromebooks available for pickup each morning from 8 am to 12 pm at the building.

8th grade families, if you have any questions regarding high school applications, please contact Mrs. Rogoff so she can get you the assistance you need!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                  January 2nd, 2022

I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season with your loved ones and that you are staying healthy and safe! As a reminder, we are switching to remote learning this week due to the surge in COVID cases. School will take place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Jan 5-7) this week on Zoom.

Crew teachers will be emailing your scholars their Zoom link, detailed class schedule, and other important instructions by Tuesday afternoon. Tell your scholar to check their school gmail account for this information. If your scholar does not have their gmail account information, please contact Mrs. Rogoff at 216-586-3887.

Zoom classes will begin at 8 AM sharp and end at 1:40 pm, but our expectation is that from 1:40-3:30, scholars work independently on iReady, meet with teachers for tutoring, or complete homework. 8th graders may also use this time to also complete their high school applications.

TECH PICK-UP

If your scholar is in need of a Chromebook, please come to the Cafeteria doors on Monday from 12 pm - 4 pm or Tuesday from 8 am - 12 pm to pick up a device. The building will be closed Wednesday-Friday!

Please contact Mrs. Rogoff with any additional questions at 216-586-3887.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Greetings 8th grade families,

As the year comes to an end, I am sure you and your scholars are looking forward to a much deserved break and some time together as a family during the holidays. I wanted to remind you all however, that now is an excellent time to begin the high school application process. I have included a simple guide to what that may look like for you and your scholar as well as included links to a few important sites that may assist with the application process as well!

Breakthrough virtual High School Fair:*

https://breakthroughschools.org/virtual-high-school-fair-school-types-page/

*Please note, that scholars have toured this fair in class, but some have not completed the final assignment attached to it. Please have scholars complete this survey to better allow the High School Placement Team to assist you and your scholar. The survey attached to this form will let us know your scholars top options for high school to ensure deadlines and criteria to apply are met.

CMSD/public schools portal application: This past week, scholars started or completed applications to CMSD. Please check with scholar to see where they are in the process. Review their selections and submit the application if it hasn’t been completed.

https://www.clevelandmetroschools.org/choosecmsd

Please keep in mind some important deadlines to consider:

January 14th is the deadline for most independent schools financial aid and admission applications.**

**Please visit the website of a school you may be interested in to determine their deadlines and admission requirements.

Happy holidays! Looking forward to an incredible new year!

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                           November 21st, 2021

We have a short but important week this week. Scholars are taking their Mid-Year iReady Diagnostics on Monday and Tuesday to determine how much they have grown thus far this year. These tests are particularly important for our 8th graders, as the scholars are sent with all high school applications!

If scholars are absent this Monday and Tuesday, they will have an opportunity to make up these tests when we return from Thanksgiving break.

Additionally, it is not too late to sign up for after school tutoring!

Are you interested in having your scholar stay after school from 4-5 PM for tutoring for their upcoming state tests? Or perhaps you would like them to receive help on missing assignments or homework? Fill out THIS FORM so that we can get your scholar a spot in our tutoring program!

If you have filled out the form already, Ms. Rogoff will be contacting you over break to give you all of the necessary details.

Last but not least, report cards were sent home in backpacks on Friday! If you need a report card feel free to email Ms. Rogoff at erogoff@citizensleadership.org to get a digital copy.

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                           November 14th, 2021

Happy Sunday! We have some exciting updates and a few upcoming events!

First, we are excited to offer after school tutoring! We had hoped to offer this by now, but we are facing some scheduling delays and have to postpone our start date until after Thanksgiving break.

Are you interested in having your scholar stay after school from 4-5 PM for tutoring for their upcoming state tests? Or perhaps you would like them to receive help on missing assignments or homework? Fill out THIS FORM so that we can get your scholar a spot in our tutoring program!

Next, we have a new staff member joining us remotely to assist with our scholars with IEPs and 504s! Ashley Nicholson has nearly 12 years of experience with special education students and is an IEP pro! Click here to read more about Ms. Nicholson and feel free to email her at anicholson@casoutheast.org with ANY questions about your scholar’s accommodations or modifications!

Finally, Winter iReady Testing is happening on the 22nd and 23rd! These tests are especially important for 8th grade students, as these scores will be included in all high school applications.

As always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                        November 7th, 2021

We are so proud of our scholars for their hard work during Trimester 1 and Student Led Conferences. Report cards will be mailed home during the week of November 15th, and families will be informed if their scholar is eligible to attend the Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremoy!

This week’s theme is GROWTH MINDSET. Many of our scholars say things like “I’m no good at math” or “I am terrible at writing” - we are hoping to show scholars that their brains can grow and develop like a muscle, and that anyone can become good at anything with the right attitude and work ethic. Please discuss this with your children this week and ask them what they hope to improve throughout this Trimester!

Last but not least, we are entering the season of High School Open Houses! 8th grade families, please ensure you are checking our Remind Messages for information about upcoming High School events! There are two listed on the calendar below. Do you have questions about the High School process? Schedule a meeting with Brianna Stephens, our High School Placement Coordinator or contact her at Bmstephens@citizenleadership.org or (216) 410-1032.

As Trimester 1 wraps up we are so looking forward to seeing you at our Student Led Conferences on Monday and Tuesday. There is no school for scholars on these two days. Scholars will have school this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Trimester 2 starts on Monday, November 8th. In T2, scholars will have new clubs (a list is coming soon!), a renewed focus on iReady, and new incentive structures such as a Roar Store where scholars can use their scholar dollars to purchase small treats.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES: On Nov 1 and 2nd we will be holding our Trimester 1 student-led conferences. These are slightly different than traditional parent-teacher conferences for the following reasons:

Student-led conferences are an incredible opportunity to develop scholar voice, confidence, and ownership of their academics. You will be contacted by your scholar’s crew teacher to set aside 30 minutes for this conference either in person or virtually.

Because student-led conferences are hosted by the scholar and their Crew teacher, you will not have the opportunity to meet with each of your scholar’s core content teachers. You are always welcome, however, to schedule a separate conference with any teacher. See our staff contact sheet here!

We are looking forward to seeing you at conferences!

Sincerely,

Ms. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                         October 4th, 2021

Thursday and Friday were joyful days at CLAS! Hawken high school students led several 6th graders in hands-on Science experiments, 7th and 8th graders earned a pajama dress-down day, and we ended the week with Tug of War, popcorn and movies, and s’mores at our 8th grade bonfire!

Unfortunately, we have noticed that social media continues to contribute to scholar “drama” at CLAS. As a reminder, our priority is to ensure CLAS is a safe and welcoming environment for all scholars. This means that we do not tolerate physical or verbal violence or instigation of conflict. We urge you to communicate with your scholars about the role that social media can play in school drama, and to remind your scholars that instigation of drama through social media is a punishable offense at CLAS.

This week, we are focusing on the role that GRATITUDE plays in making us happier and healthier individuals. We will practice expressing gratitude for the people and resources in our lives, and we encourage you to reflect with your scholars on the people and things that you are grateful for each and every day.

Upcoming Events:

As always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                   September 26th, 2021

We hope you enjoyed a beautiful three day weekend with your scholars. Fall weather is approaching and we have two weeks of school until we dismiss for Fall Break the week of October 11th.

Congratulations to 7th grade for winning the very first dress down day of the year on Friday!

This week, scholars will battle in LUNCH WARS for the chance to win a PAJAMA DAY on Friday! Scholars will also be able to earn a ticket to celebration by earning $84 or more scholar dollars. 6th and 7th grade celebration this week is a movie and popcorn, while 8th grade will enjoy the first CLAS bonfire of the year!

Schoolbelles has notified us that there are no longer any shipping delays on school polos, so we are expecting all scholars to attend school in full CLAS uniform. If scholars are wearing sweaters or sweatshirts over their school polos, they must be solid colors (purple, black, gray, white, navy) and may not feature large brand names or logos. Furthermore, we do not permit hoods to be worn during the school day. If you are struggling to purchase school uniforms please reach out to the front office staff for assistance.

Behavior paychecks will be sent home on Monday to be signed. Updated grades + your Parent Portal account information will be sent home with your scholar on Tuesday. If you are concerned about your scholar’s grades, please reach out to your scholar’s crew teacher to get them signed up for tutoring. Here is our staff contact page. Additionally, if you are struggling to login to Powerschool Parent Portal, please be sure you are using this link: https://ps-bt.metasolutions.net/public/home.html.

We are excited for our FIRST family event of the year - a virtual Family Action Meeting on Wednesday, October 6th at 6 PM in Ms. Rogoff’s Zoom Room.

Finally, we will be focusing on DIGNITY in Crew and Community Meeting. Please discuss with your scholar what it means to act with and to treat others with dignity.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff

Dear CLAS Families,                                                                              September 19th, 2021

It is hard to believe that one month of school has passed already. On Friday, we celebrated our scholars’ self-discipline with Community Meeting and an ice cream social; it felt incredible to see our kids in joyful community with one another. See below for reminders and updates below as we continue to refine and improve our systems for week 5!

Our theme this week is teamwork - please speak to your scholar about what it means to be a strong teammate in the face of obstacles and challenges (we’ve noticed that it is difficult for some of our scholars to display sportsmanship when they are on a losing team!).

Speaking of teams, this week we launched LUNCH WARS at CLAS. Each grade level “battles” for points by cleaning up after themselves, staying seated, and following our other cafeteria norms. The grade level with the most points by the end of the day Wednesday will earn our first Dress Down Day of the year this Thursday, September 23rd! The winning grade team will be announced via Remind!

Lunch Wars is just one way we promote positive behavior at CLAS. On Monday, your scholar will bring home their very first Kickboard Paycheck. This paycheck will include all of the merits and demerits they earned last week. The merits will be listed on the left side and demerits will be listed on the right. Scholars start off their week with $80 in their account. Each merit adds $4 and each demerit deducts $4. Please sign the bottom of the paycheck to indicate that you received this paycheck. Scholars must return their Paycheck to their Crew teacher on Tuesday for a grade.

Grades are being entered in every class, but we are experiencing technical difficulties with Powerschool at this time. We are hoping to send home our first updated progress reports along with your Powerschool Parent Portal login information on Monday, Sept 27th.

There is no school this Friday, September 24th as we are holding a Professional Development (PD) day for our teachers. On this PD day, teachers will be calling their crew families to provide you with information on your scholar’s iReady diagnostic scores. Here is our year-long academic calendar so that you can see all of our future PD days.

Please remember that at CLAS we collect all cell phones and Apple watches at the beginning of the day. If scholars do not turn in their electronic devices and we see them out later, we will collect the cell phone, give a -$20 paycheck deduction, and assign reflection. If this happens a second time, we will also collect the device and hold onto it until a family member comes and personally picks it up.

Finally, if any member of your scholar’s immediate household is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and awaiting test results, please complete the reporting form and keep your scholar(s) home until those test results are available.

In Partnership,

Mrs. Rogoff

September 12, 2021

Dear CLAS Families,

We are so proud of our scholars for adapting to being back in person after being out of the building for so long! As we move into our fourth week of school, we have a few reminders of how we plan to improve even more:

First, we are committed to prioritizing scholar and staff safety each day. We will be tightening mask expectations for all scholars when they are not either eating breakfast or lunch. Scholars will be receiving an automatic demerit for not having a mask properly covering their nose and mouth. As a reminder, this also means that scholars are not permitted to eat snacks during class time. Scholars are, however, permitted to drink water from their own water bottles. Please provide your scholar with a reusable water bottle as our cup supplies are limited.

We will also continue to hold scholars to high behavioral standards. Next Monday, you will receive your scholar’s first “CLAS Paycheck” that outlines each merit and demerit they received over the course of the week and the reason why. Scholars start each week with an $80 deposit in their “bank account” and earn or lose $4 for each merit or demerit they receive. If scholars receive 3 demerits in a day, they do not transition to clubs but instead transition to Reflection with our Dean of Culture, Mr. Gamble. Additionally, please remember that scholar cell phones and Apple Watches are collected at the beginning of each school day and placed in a secure location to ensure our scholars can focus on learning and engaging with their peers.

Clubs are underway at CLAS! Here are the following clubs that we are offering in Trimester 1: Sports, Fitness, Anime, MAC Diamonds, MAC Gents, Pride Club (with family consent), Math or ELA Tutoring, Homework Center, Yoga, Art, Debate, and Student Government

We care about scholar mental health. We begin each day with Crew, which is 30 minutes of social-emotional learning and discussion. This week’s topic in Crew and in Community Meeting is self-discipline.  Please discuss the importance of self-discipline with your scholar this week and ensure your scholar arrives to school by 8 AM so that they may participate in Crew.

We celebrate scholar success. This Friday’s Celebration is an Ice Cream Social! Scholars must have at least $84 in their Bank Accounts to attend this Celebration.

As always, we appreciate your partnership and look forward to developing our Future Change Makers.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rogoff
