Blood-Brain Barrier

The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a highly selective semipermeable border of endothelial cells; that prevents solutes in the circulating blood from non-selectively crossing into the extracellular fluid;

Extracellular fluid;

The distribution of the total body water in mammals between the intracellular compartment and the extracellular compartment, which is, in turn, subdivided into interstitial fluid and smaller components, such as the blood plasma, the cerebrospinal and lymph fluid

of the central nervous system where neurons reside. The blood–brain barrier is formed by endothelial cells of the capillary wall, astrocyte end-feet ensheathing the capillary, and pericytes embedded in the capillary basement membrane.  This allows the passage of some small molecules by passive diffusion, as well as the selective and active transport of various nutrients, ions, organic anions, and macromolecules such as glucose and amino acids that are crucial to neural function.

For Health and Long Life

Explains

It is easy to go down a rabbit hole and find ourselves studying a whole field of biology that is time consuming and takes one away from the original specific interest.

The readership of For Health and Long Life is varied, there is no reason why an electrical engineer or a physicist for example necessarily has an interest in biology. This is why we place these small briefs on for example in this case Blood-Brain Barrier.
