Exploring Student Behavior - 8 week mini-series

Over the next 8 weeks we will explore student behaviors at school. The purpose of this mini-series is to share with students, families and community members various information on our universal foundations of teaching behavior, how behaviors are monitored and supported and strategies that work at school and can work at home. We hope you will take a few minutes each week to read and learn a little bit about Big Creek Behavior Plans.

In this first week we talk about the concept of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (or PBIS). PBIS is a term that covers how we positively build and intervene for students from a behavioral standpoint. We support students through a tiered system. Tier 1 are behavior supports that all students receive. This includes learning about being respectful, responsible and safe! Tier 2 behavior supports provide small group behavior lessons, often with our school counselor. Tier 3 behavior supports provide individual support programs, often with a student specific behavior plan. The good news is that every student receives opportunities to receive tools and guidance to build healthy positive behaviors in school and throughout their community! For more information check out the link below!

What is PBIS?

BE PREPARED - LUNCH CHOICES ARE ADJUSTED

Our cafeteria staff continue to provide fresh, kid-friendly meals each day. The recent supply chain issues have impacted our menus and meals may change periodically. Talk with your child about a back-up plan. Each day students have a choice of the main menu item, a PBJ or Yogurt lunch. If your child is selective with the foods he/she will eat we recommend a packed lunch when needed.

BE PREPARED - SNOW IS HERE!

Snow is here! Thank you for sending your child to school with snow clothes. We will have students outside as much as possible. The BCSD Elementary Handbook outlines our recess procedures - please take a few minutes to review the information provided. In addition to snow clothes, a spare change of clothes (including shirt, pants and under garments) are recommended for all students. A wet slide, or a spill in the snow can result in wet clothes which can make for a long afternoon of learning. A spare change of clothes may be the perfect solution - even for our 4th graders!

Marco’s Pizza Night - PTA Fundraiser

$205.62 was made for PTA on our February 8th Marco’s pizza night.  Mrs. Ohlemacher’s class had the highest sales with 9 orders and will receive a pizza party!

TUESDAY, MARCH 9th  is our next Marco’s Pizza night, showcasing KINDERGARTEN pizza box tops!

REMEMBER: You can order Marco’s pizza ANYTIME and mention BIg Creek. We earn points towards a cash prize at the end of the year. The winning local school with the most points will earn $5000 towards the end of year!

A note on Personal Items/Electronic Communication Devices

As a reminder, students are not permitted to use or have visible personal communication items (phones, smart watches…) during the school day. Below is an excerpt from the BCSD Student Handbook for elementary school. Please work with your child and the teacher to ensure that devices either stay home, or are not visible during the school day.

“Children are not permitted to bring personal items to school such as trading cards, toys, or radio-controlled devices. These items tend to become a disruption to the instructional process and create other disturbances. Additionally, toy guns are not permitted at school. Knives, real or play are likewise not permitted at school. These items are also not allowed at sharing time. During the regular school day students are not permitted to use or have any visible  electronic communication devices (cell phones, headphones, iPod, etc.) unless specifically authorized for an educational or instructional purpose with the teacher’s permission and supervision. Violation of this policy may result in the confiscation of the electronic device. Storage of such confiscated devices will be in the main office and retrievable only by a parent/guardian.”

ALL STUDENTS are to have a COMPLETE set of EXTRA Clothing

ALL children should have a COMPLETE SET OF EXTRA CLOTHING in their locker just in case they need it. We have had many students who have gotten wet during recess, spilled milk on themselves or had an accident and did not have a change of clothes. Please put at least one (1) complete set of clothes in a bag, put your child’s name on the bag, and send the bag to school with your child.  Clothes will be kept in their student locker.  Thank you!

P.E. Message

Now that the cold weather is here many of our students are wearing boots to school.  Please remember all students must have proper tennis shoes to participate in P.E. class.  Without proper tennis shoes, students will not be able to participate in P.E. class.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL UPDATE

During winter weather it is important to keep appropriate distance between vehicles. Cars that have arrived to drop off or pick up should make all attempts to be an appropriate distance from the next car. Safe distances will keep our vehicles and (more importantly) our students safe!

Apply for Meal Benefits

Although all families are eligible to receive free meals through the USDA meal program until the end of the school year, families who are eligible for free and reduced lunch should apply if they may qualify. Free and reduced benefits also include certain fees being waived or reduced.

CLINIC NEWS for FEBRUARY

A toothache is a pain in or around a tooth that may be caused by:

                                      * A damaged tooth   * Repetitive motions-chewing gum or grinding teeth

                                      * Abscessed tooth    * Tooth decay

                                      * Infected gums        * Tooth fracture

Symptoms of toothache may include: * Tooth pain that may be sharp, throbbing or constant.  In some,  the Pain is only when pressure is applied to the Tooth.

When Should You See a Dentist???  As soon as possible, if your toothache lasts longer than 1-2 days, it’s severe, or you have a fever, earache, or pain upon opening your mouth wide.

Treatment:   The treatment will depend on the cause.  Your dentist will be able to determine it.  If you have a cavity, the dentist will fill the cavity or extract the tooth, a root canal might be needed if it’s an infection of the tooth nerve, and an antibiotic may be prescribed.

How to Prevent Toothaches:  Good oral hygiene practices which consist of:

                            * Brushing your teeth regularly with fluoride-containing toothpaste

                            * Flossing once daily

                            * Rinsing once or twice a day with antiseptic mouthwash

                            * Seeing your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning.

                            * Eating foods low in sugar.
