  1. A fun coming-of-age tale about a girl gaining magical powers.

  3. It’s a mixture of an interesting magical plotline and a heartfelt story of identity and family.

Description:

12-year-old Tonya DeBose leads a relatively normal life in the small town of Hartville - until one day a spat with the neighborhood bully has a surprisingly magical conclusion, and Tonya must contend with the new powers she’s suddenly able to wield. Now she must deal with the fact that apparently she’s a witch on top of the racism she already had to face in her day-to-day life. It all seems fun and exciting at first until someone accidentally gets hurt, and she wonders if she can handle her new abilities and who she can trust. Although Tonya's family has been living in Hartville for generations, Tonya and her dad are the only two members left. Tonya knows little about her mom, and whenever she's tried approaching it with her dad, he goes quiet for days. Afraid for her life and unsure about her powers, Tonya digs deep into her family history and the town of Hartville's in her struggle to discover who, and what, she is.
