Landing Gear extension

Existing MP (mavic Pro) legs 5mm

Addition height options

MPC = Mavic pro chassis

Cradle only: 2.5cm = 3cm from ground to MPC

Cradle + 4 go pro clips: 3.5cm ground to MPC

go pro clips are not locked down, will slide up on hard contact to ground (shock absorbing) and stop 5m before base of cradle as the top of the go pro clip will rest against under carriage of MP

Cradle + cross Bar + go pro clips: 5cm from ground to MPC

Using the supplied velcro strap the clips are secured thru the cross bar

Go pro clips are pushed down thru the cross bar, the go pro clip section below the bar shows a thread and slot. Run the velcro thru the slot between 2 GP clips

Depending on the angle you create with the flexible legs from 4 to 10 cms

We used velcro to lock the pins, other options avail but this was fast and solid

Float rig

Our mission was to create a portable system that packed quickly and into a travel bag

We have not spent much time on it as we don’t fly close to water surface, we have not yet determined the minimum safe size. The length of the drone is obvious a starting point

Three (3) options

  1. Traveller

For: quick to assemble, the noodles easy fit in travel bag and act is cusion for existing gear

2. Standard

Cradle, 2 x Cross bar, 2 x Noodles and velcro straps (option for go pro clips)

Tested and working

Option use go pro clips down thru cross bar to anchor into noodle

Its an added option to change the beam size of noodles

3. 3d printed plastic brackets (under test)

clip to end of the cross bar and pinch lock around stock standard noodles

This will force the noodles out wider .. greater beam

Noodle are a standard swimming support float device approx 65mm diam

Cut to length - from 15cm to 25cm

We are testing different styles

Ideal configuration

The Cradle

Add 4 x Velcro straps  (comes in packet of 2)

1 x bind to drone and 1x to bind to a tripod or hand fly device

1 x bind 4 go pro clips 1 x spare strap

Buy nuts (metal & plastic from the hardware store) or we can supply

Metal V’s Plastic

NB: Some devices have short metal thread which do not hold well with plastic nuts

We recommend metal nuts or camera accessory nuts unless the bolt has a long thread

Some tripods have a small thread which will not bind to a plastic nut

The Cross Bar     (made with Nylon for extra strength)

You can use metal camera bars subject to weight (we tested many with success)

The cross bar was designed to use with land based camera (normally photo work)

1 cross bar can carry lights / camera using ¼ thread or go pro clips

2 cross bar can be used for above or to add floats

2 cross bars means be used to increase height (landing gear) with 4 x go pro clips

To bind the 4 x go pro clips you need 2 x velcro straps

If adding floats you need 2 x floats and 4 x velcro straps

You dnt need the go pro clips for floats but can be used to anchor the floats at different beam

Go pro clips    (made with Nylon for extra strength)

To increase height of cradle add 4 x clips

To carry something camera / lights add more clips

There are many combos, some have flat heads which if wide enough can keep the cradle balanced when resting on the ground - the obvious choice is standard camera equipment accessories which is what we use

3d print material

Under construction

NYLON:  the strongest lightweight material,

we use NYLON on cross bar and go pro clips as they have to do some work

We use ABS on Cradle (lower grade ABS (cheaper to produce)

For around 200bt more the 3d printer can change to Nylon which is flexible and durable

We have not tested nylon for the cradle and think ABS is better for solid vertical walls

The Cradle

What are all the holes and slots  - swiss army theme

Droners have diff camera’s tripods we considered all options

Connect to drone

The 2 x vertical walls of the cradle lock in the grates under the drone

Then use 1 or 2 velcro straps to wrap around the drone with arms in or out based on flying or hand flying

Additions slots allow you to bind a strap below to hand carry devices or tripods

Connect to cross bar

Three (3) threads under the cradle

Use the 2 end threads for 2 cross bars or the middle thread for 1 cross bar

Connect to float

Use 2 cross bars

Options

Add go pro clips to cradle to increase height (landing gear)

The pieces are like a leggo set, add different ways to suit

Tips and tricks

Warning:  using cradle you MUST disable down sensors  (Vision Positioning)

If you don’t the drone (on launch) WILL NOT hover (at 1.2mtr on auto launch) and continue up, flicking to S (sports mode) will cause it to stop (hover) between 10 to 20 mtrs)  

NB: S (Sport) mode override most flight modes and/or sensors

How to DISABLE down sensors (Vision Positioning)

  1. Main screen click Icon of sensors and again on sub menu
  2. Scroll to bottom of sensor menu and select advanced
  3. Scroll down to option “Enable Vision Positioning” select disable
  4. Caution: when you land the drone will not pause 1mtr from surface SO SLOW DOWN or simply with cradle attached it’s super easy to catch (explained in FAQ Down sensor “ON” with cradle - what happens)

BEFORE ANY FLIGHT: you must go thru your pre flight checklist

Physical condition (you and equipment, Home point, min height, sensors, weather, contingent landing area, safe hover zones etc etc more in manual

CONTINUOUS FLY AND LAND HAND FLY CARRY

Mount rig (cradle, cross bar, light/s camera/s) below drone for fly work, on landing hover, catch, hold,  hand carry/fly OR flip rig above drone and continue

Don’t I need them

Many users are comfortable to leave them off, they are misleading over water and same texture surface and poor lighting

Just start practicing without them and you will not consider

Drone gets hot

Yes same as most engines another good reason to connect the cradle so you don’t touch the base of the drone (which gets hot), when you connect the cradle using velcro straps you can wrap around the arms when folding in to lock in the props or only the drone chassis when the arms are out - up to you

Hand fly

Arms / propellers locked in when motors on.  does this cause damage

A:  No, from reading of forum articles it does not. The motors are under far more pressure when in flight

Many people start the drone with arms locked in to for non flight purpose ie., transfer photos/video and check settings, on start up the props will rotate slightly (a few mm) and stop

Hand fly; you can hold the cradle when its strapped to the drone with arms in or out otherwise

Quick small jobs I connect either

  1. a go pro float - it’s small, quick and strong enough to hold the drone horizontally
  2. Octopus tripod - it’s small, quick and strong enough upright but not out horizontally

Both are also good for launch / catch

I also use the Octopus tripod in the centre of the cradle for landed height when i have a 360 camera connected below the cradle, this keeps the bird off the ground and clearance for the 360 camera

For bigger jobs I prefer to use the 2 piece metal bars, they can configure three (3) ways

There are many and they are obvious

The idea is the drone is locked down on the cradle

The cradle is locked down on the tripod

With the drone locked to cradle and cradle locked to tripod try Hand fly, pick up the tripod (or monopod) and dangle move it in and out of crazy positions. With the built in stabiliser your video is very stable and people will wonder how on earth you flew the drone in/out of that position

 

You can add the cross bar to introduce elements such as lights

We were very surprised when testing the go pro selfie (see the item in our list)

It has a pop out tripod legs, or remove one section and connect it to the cradle for a awesome hand carry carry tripod above or below the drone.

About

I’m a keen drone user and developed these ideas with friends for my own use

When I’m in Bangkok (Monthly) I carry a combo bag (drone and few batteries) and another bag with camera gear; tripods mini or medium, several cameras (normal and 360) lights and power banks

Objective

equipment that’s easier to carry in the bag (flat) and interchangeable between the drone and my existing camera gear. Some drone users have the luxury of launching from a house, car, boat with supporting resources ie.,. Carry Space and power

Most of my drone use is Travelling, my support base is a car boot (trunk) or a few carry bags

I have spent a lot time and money testing, failures, and proto types

FAQ Down sensor “ON” with cradle - what happens

Answer: 2017/07/24 The drone will auto rise (ascend) to 20 mts (not 10) and hover.

You need to turn off the down sensors .. a few buttons on RC

Press RC icon, advanced, scroll to see down sensors - in this link

Warning:  CRADLE USE: MUST disable down sensors - see how

NOTE: When DOWN SENSOR OFF  - > caution landing:  drone will not pause .5mtr from surface

GOOD NEWS: With cradle under drone it’s super easy to catch, hold and turn off motors.

When holding drone with motors on dnt move quickly as the motors will arc up hold the position.

ALWAYS: Test (practice) in a safe place to understand the logic

Auto launch V’s manual launch with cradle under drone

Auto

  1. Turn of down sensors and it will hover at 1.2 mtr as normal
  2. Not turn off and it will ascend (rise) to 10 or 20 mtrs and hover

This is ok from ground level as it will stop at 1.2mtr

If you plan (like me) to launch from a balcony use manual take of with the drone in your hand - it’s easy if you practice in safe area before you need it

Manual

  1. Leave bird on LEVEL ground to initialise
  2. Pick it up and hold in your hand at launch height . waist height
  3. Start motors (2 knobs down and in) and release knobs when motors start
  4. SLOWLY move drone to preferred launch height
  5. Slight and quickly pull down and the motors will rev up (wake up) to take control of height to stabilise the drone
  6. Remove hand and drone is hovering
