Values:

As a school family we are committed to:

PBIS Theme - Granby Bears are safe, kind, and helpful

GENERAL INFORMATION

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Report cards will be issued at the end of each semester.  Parents may also call the school or grade level teams at any time during the school year if they have questions pertaining to grades or academic progress.

ADMISSION OF NON-RESIDENT STUDENTS

Students who do not legally qualify as residents of the District may attend GES in accordance with state residency laws.  Legal guardianship must be documented if a student chooses to attend Granby Elementary School.  It is the policy of the Board of Education to adhere strictly to provisions of said statute governing the legal residence of a child for school purposes.  An informal delegation of parental powers by a child's non-resident parent to a person who is a resident of the District, without formal appointment of such person as guardian, will not be accepted.  Applications for enrollment for a non-resident student shall be made as follows:

1.        A formal letter of request shall be made to the Superintendent explaining:

        a.        Reasons and circumstances regarding student attendance in this District, and

        b.          Student information, including age, classification, previous school attended, and

other information desired by the Superintendent.

2.        The Superintendent shall make known to the Board of Education any request for non-resident student         attendance at GES.  The Board of Education reserves the right to grant or deny any application made for the purpose of attendance in this District for enrollment of non-resident students.

Through separate written policies, the Board of Education has adopted procedures governing the denial of admission or expulsion of students who do not qualify for admission to or continued attendance at the public schools of the District.  If a student becomes a non-resident of the District subsequent to the time of enrollment, he/she shall be allowed to complete the semester for which the student is enrolled.

CALENDAR

School information including class activities, sports calendars, and the school calendar may be accessed on our school website:  ges.egsd.org

CAFETERIA

We encourage everyone to complete the free and reduced lunch application (part of the online enrollment process) to make sure our school receives the designated funds to help support a variety of programs. During the 2023-2024 school year all students will have the opportunity to receive a free breakfast and free lunch.

The free and reduced lunch program does not apply to milk only.

School lunches are provided in the cafeteria.  Whether a student brings his/her lunch from home or has school lunch, he/she must eat in the designated area.  Students should be on their best behavior while eating.

Board policy states that when flagrant abuse by students of any policies and procedures of the district's food service management occur, the student shall lose his/her lunch privileges.

Cafeteria Conduct

Good manners must prevail at all times.  Walk quietly to the cafeteria and be on time.  At the end of the period all sacks, paper, trays and food must be disposed of properly.  When you finish eating, remain seated in the cafeteria.  You may go outside when the duty teacher dismisses you.   Students are to use the restrooms located by the cafeteria during lunch and recess.

Cafeteria Rules

  1. Do not cut in the line.
  2. Only five students may be in the kitchen at a time; other students need to wait in line outside of the kitchen.
  3. Pick up trash and recycle. from the table and floor.  Students are responsible for making sure their table is clean.

4.  Do not carry food into the halls or classrooms.

5.  Stay out of the halls unless permission is obtained from a teacher.

6.  Students are to stay seated unless:

        - returning trays

        - using the restrooms

        - exiting outside

7.  We encourage students to bring healthy food for lunch and refrain from soda, energy drinks and other sugary beverages.  We know that students perform best when they are filling their bodies with nutrient-rich foods and beverages.

Colorado School Safety Hotline/Safe to Tell

1-877-542-SAFE (7233)

If you know of a threat to a fellow student, teacher, or school facility, call the Colorado School Safety Hotline.  You may remain anonymous.

COUNSELING

The counseling and guidance services of the school are available to all students. Services available include scheduling and educational planning, academic assistance, testing, personal counseling, along with also being a bridge to helpful community resources. Students and parents are urged to contact the front office or the principal if they have a concern or need any information.

HEALTH SERVICES

The health room is available for students who are ill or who have been injured at school.  When the school nurse is not in the building, the student should report to the office.  Students will not be permitted to use the health room just to rest or get out of class.

It's the law!!  Immunization requirements will be strictly enforced for all school children.  Children who do not meet the requirements will not be allowed into school, according to current Colorado law, Revised Statues 25-4-902.

Effective July 2015 Students grades, K-12 are required to 3 doses of Hep B, 2 - doses of MMR, 2- doses of Varicella (chickenpox), 5 doses of DTaP -- with another dose at 6th grade of Tdap, and 4 doses IVP (Polio).

It is the responsibility of the parent to present proof of either having met the legal requirement for immunization, or having completed an exemption form to the student's new school at the time of registration.  A parent must provide one of the following to the student's school in order to comply with the law.

1. A certificate of Immunization from a licensed doctor or authorized representative of the local health department certifying that a child has received the required minimum immunizations

2. A Statement of Exemption to the Immunization Law printed on the reverse side of the Colorado Department of Health Certificate of Immunization:

a) Medical exemption signed by licensed doctor stating that the child's physical condition is such that immunizations would endanger life or health; or

b) Religious exemption signed by the child's parent, that they have a religious belief whose teachings are opposed to immunizations; or

c) Personal exemption signed by the child's parent that they have a personal belief opposed to immunizations

As of July 2016, any student who chooses to be exempt from immunizations must renew a signature yearly with the school health office to be compliant of exemption status at the school district.

If, at any time, there is (in the opinion of the State Health Department or local health department) danger of an epidemic from any of the communicable diseases for which the immunization is required, no exception or exemption from immunization against disease shall be recognized.  Such situations will automatically exclude students from school attendance until such time as the threat of an epidemic has been lifted.

ADMINISTERING MEDICATION

If a student is required to take oral medication during school hours, and the parent cannot be at school to administer the medication in compliance with State regulations, school personnel may give these medications only upon written order of a physician and guardian.  If it is necessary for either prescription or non-prescription medication to be given at school the following steps must be followed.

1.        A Nonprescription or Over the Counter Medication Permission form must be completed, signed by the                 parent or guardian and returned to school.  Forms are available at the school office.

2.        All medication must be brought to school in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacy,                         pharmaceutical company, or physician.

3.        If the medication is a prescription, the prescription label shall act as permission from the physician.  Please ask your pharmacist for two correctly labeled bottles; one for home and one for school.

4.         Acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), Mylanta, Calamine Lotion, Dacriose, first aid cream, and Cacitracin ointment may be dispensed by school personnel only with YEARLY written permission from the parent/guardian and physician.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL PROCEDURE

The safety and welfare of our students is paramount.  Obtaining immediate medical assistance for injuries, illness or other emergencies is the responsibility of the principal, coach or other immediate supervisor.  The following procedure will be followed in an emergency:

Parents are to supply the school with the name, address and telephone number of the family physician upon registration. The school will keep this information on file in the main office and it will be immediately available to coaches and activity sponsors.

When medical assistance is deemed necessary by the supervisor, we will notify the parent of the situation and confirm the doctor to whom the child is to be taken.  In the event the parent cannot be reached, the supervisor will take the student to the family physician listed in the student’s records.  If the student’s family physician is not available, the supervisor will use his own judgment to obtain the services of another physician if the supervisor feels immediate medical attention is required.  The services of an ambulance will be requested if the supervisor or principal cannot contact the parent and immediate medical attention is necessary to the welfare of the student.  Parents will be contacted by school personnel as soon as possible.

MEDIA CENTER/LIBRARY

The Media Center is here for you to use for reading, research, studying and browsing.  Please come in often.  In order to provide the best service possible to all students, the following policies have been adopted.

1.        Check-Out

Most books are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed once.  Reference books will be checked out for one day and should not leave the building. Magazines are to be used only in the library.  All materials taken from the room must be checked out.  The library lends books; you borrow them; they are not your property.

2.        Fines

The library does not charge a fine for overdue books, but library privileges may be withheld from those with overdue books or unpaid fees.  Fees are only applied to lost or damaged books.

3.        Lost Materials

If a book is lost or destroyed, the replacement cost will be charged to the student.  Failure to pay the                 charge promptly will result in administrative action.

4.        Conduct

        a.        All students coming to the library from a classroom need to have a pass.  It should be checked                         at the circulation desk upon arrival.

        b.        Students are expected to remain quiet so that others in the room may work undisturbed.

        c.        Failure to adhere to school policies and library rules will result in the student returning to class and possible suspension of privileges.

SCHOOL POLICIES

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

We value honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility in academics at Granby Elementary. Therefore, we expect students to do their own homework, to test without using unauthorized help and to submit original work for all assignments. We expect students will not cheat. Students are to deny all requests from other students to copy class work, homework and tests.

Students shall not misrepresent test materials, research information, and class work and/or homework assignments as their own.  Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to the following:

The classroom teacher and/or administrator is responsible for determining if cheating has occurred.

First Offense

Second or Greater (or any subsequent) Offense

ACTIVITY TRANSPORTATION CONSENT AND RELEASE - AS NEEDED, EVENT SPECIFIC

Traveling to away activities and field trips: a student is to travel with the school group to and from the activity.

Activity sponsors are forbidden to release students to anyone besides the child’s parent without notification from the building principal prior to the activity. Any student leaving an event with his/her parent or a pre-approved adult must be signed out with the activity sponsor before leaving the activity site.

ASSEMBLIES

Students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all assemblies.  Failure to show good conduct may result in being suspended from attending assemblies.

ATTENDANCE

If a student is ill or must be absent from school, parents are asked to call the school before 9:00 a.m. at the office phone number, 887-3312.  Tardiness is not accepted.  One criteria of a student’s success in school is regular and punctual attendance.  Frequent absences may lead to poor academic work, lack of social development, and possible academic failure.  No single factor may interfere with a student’s progress more quickly than frequent tardiness or absence.  Remember, one day absent on our four-day week is equal to a day and a quarter on a regular five-day calendar.

According to state law, it is the obligation of every parent to ensure that every child under his care and supervision receives adequate education and training and, if of compulsory attendance age, attends school.

Excessive Absences

Because we so strongly believe in the importance of a student’s attendance at school, we may implement the Excessive Absence and Truancy Reduction Program to help support your child’s attendance.   These are possible interventions we may use in dealing with excessive absences.

Excused Absences

1.         A student who is temporarily ill or injured or whose absence is approved by the school administrator.

2.         A student who is absent for an extended period due to physical, mental, or emotional disability.

3.          Prearranged absences shall be approved for appointments, other student commitments, or circumstances of         a serious nature, which cannot be taken care of outside of school hours.

4.         A student who is pursuing a work-study program under the supervision of the school.

5.         A student who is attending any school sponsored activity.

The principal will make the final determination whether an absence is excused or unexcused. Students participating in school-sponsored trips are expected to have class work missed that day submitted upon return without punitive academic penalty. Classroom work may be completed prior to the absence if arranged with the teacher.  As applicable the district may require suitable proof regarding the above exceptions, including written statements from medical sources.

Unexcused Absences

An unexcused absence is defined as an absence that is not covered by one of the forgoing exceptions.  Each unexcused absence shall be entered on the student’s record.  The parents/guardians of the student receiving an unexcused absence shall be notified orally or in writing by the district of the unexcused absence.  Please refer to JH for the full district policy regarding absences.  This can be referenced on the school district website:  egsd.org.

Make-Up Work

Make-up work shall be provided for any class in which a student has an excused absence unless otherwise determined by the building administrator or unless the absence is due to the student’s expulsion from school.  It is the responsibility of the student to pick up any make-up assignments permitted on the day he/she returns to class.  There shall be one day allowed for make-up work for each day of absence.  For pre-excused absences with a 48-hour prior written notice, a teacher will provide up to one week of classroom assignments when possible and practical.  Students are expected to make up all work as determined by the classroom teacher.  All pre-assigned work will be expected upon a student’s immediate return to school unless indicated differently by the teacher on the official pre-excused documentation.

The student has the responsibility to find out from the teachers the work he/she missed and will have the right to make-up such work and any tests missed during the period of absence.  There will be one day allowed for make-up work for each day of absence with the exception of prearranged absences and suspensions.  When dates for exams, class presentations, projects, etc., are announced in advance, they are due either before the student leaves or the first day the student returns from an absence.  The due dates for additional work assigned for a pre-excused absence are at the discretion of the teacher; students may be asked to have work completed upon the day they return or with extenuating circumstances, they may be given additional time upon their return to complete missed work.

Make-up work shall be allowed following an unexcused absence with the goal of providing the student an opportunity to keep up with the class and an incentive to attend school.  However, this work may receive only partial credit, which is the consequence for an unexcused absence.  Teachers may have different policies regarding students being able to turn in late work and the amount of credit they may or may not receive.  Please reference teachers’ syllabi (located at egms.egsd.org) for guidelines on late work for specific classes.

BULLYING

Bullying is defined as any written or verbal expression, physical act or gesture, or a pattern thereof, that is intended to cause distress upon one or more students in the school environment.  For purposes of this policy

(JICDE), the school environment includes school buildings, grounds, vehicles, bus stops and all school-sponsored activities and events. Through the health curriculum, and other instructional practices, students learn about bullying and how best to respond.

We work hard to teach students the difference between normal conflict and bullying.  This chart from Bullyproofing Your School provides good guidance on the differences:

Normal Conflict

Bullying

Equal power – friends

Imbalance of power; not friends

Happens occasionally

Repeated negative actions

Accidental

Purposeful

Not serious

Serious – threat of physical harm or emotional or psychological hurt

Equal emotional reaction

Strong emotional reaction on part of the victim

Not seeking power or attention

Seeking power, control

Not trying to get something

Trying to gain material things or power

Remorse – taking responsibility

No remorse – blames victim

Effort to solve the problem

No effort to solve the problem

BUS REGULATIONS

Students have the privilege of using the transportation services of East Grand Schools. Rigid standards of discipline must be maintained at all times in order to satisfy requirements.  Whenever a driver must direct his/her attention away from the road, danger exists.  Parents are encouraged to go over each rule and regulation with their children to assure a sound understanding of all regulations imposed upon their children while riding an East Grand School bus.

While riding the bus:

1.  Talk in a normal tone of voice and do not make loud, unnecessary noises.

2.  Stay in the assigned seat, facing forward, at all times while the bus is in motion.

3.  Keep head, arms and hands on the inside of the bus.

4.  Keep the aisle of the bus clear of objects and put paper and other debris in the wastebasket.

5.  Will not open emergency doors unless specifically requested to do so by the driver.

6.  Will not make offensive remarks or gestures to pedestrians or motorists.

7.  Will not eat, drink, or smoke (eating will be allowed on occasion on a prearranged basis).

8.  Will not have personal contact or other behavior that is considered unsuitable and will distract the driver.

9.  Will not jeopardize the safety of other students.

In the event a student fails to adhere to the Rules and Regulations and an infraction occurs the following procedures will be implemented.

First Infraction:  Student will be issued a Bus Conduct Slip.  The administrator will meet with the student         and notify him/her that the next infraction will result in a four (4) day transportation suspension

Second Infraction:  The administrator will notify the student that his/her second infraction         constitutes his/her receiving a four (4) day transportation suspension.  Upon return the driver will assign the student a specific seat and notify the Transportation Director. The student will be notified that a third infraction will result in his/her being suspended from district transportation for a period of eight (8) days.

Third Infraction:  The administrator will notify the student that his/her third infraction constitutes his/her         receiving an eight (8) day transportation suspension.  The student will be notified that a fourth infraction         may result in his/her being suspended from or denied district transportation for an extensive period, which         may include the remainder of the school year.

Fourth Infraction:  The administrator will notify the student that his/her fourth infraction constitutes his/ her receiving an immediate transportation suspension, the exact length to be determined during a conference with the student, parent, driver, principal and transportation director.  The suspension could be for the remainder of the school year.

Appeal Process:  In the event a suspension is imposed for a period exceeding sixteen (16) school days         the student may appeal in writing to a review counsel consisting of the administrator, transportation director and bus driver or designee.  A hearing will be scheduled by the administrator seven (7) calendar         days after receiving the written appeal to her testimony and make a determination as to whether         reinstatement of the student’s transportation privileges is appropriate.

For more details please refer to the district transportation policies available in the school office.  If         changes are made to rules and regulations parents and students will be notified.

CAMERAS (ECAF)

Surveillance cameras are in use on the Granby Elementary  campus, within facilities, and in district transportation vehicles for the purposes listed below:

        1.    Maintaining safe and secure school campuses and facilities that contribute to the

                safety of students, staff, and others;

        2.        Fostering safe transport of students;

        3.        Deterring vandalism, theft, and unauthorized access to school facilities;

        4.        Detecting unlawful behaviors by individuals on district property, in school

                facilities, and in school vehicles;

        5.        Assisting law enforcement and emergency responders to safely carry out their

                duties.

CLOSED CAMPUS POLICY

Elementary  school students must remain on campus all day unless a parent or guardian requests permission for the student to be released.  Parents must come to the office and sign the student out unless prior arrangements are made with the principal.  Students will only be released to parents or emergency contacts listed on the student registration sheet.

Students who are not participating in an authorized school activity under the supervision of a faculty member may not arrive earlier than 7:45 am or remain on campus after 4:30 pm.  If a student must arrive earlier or remain later than campus hours allow, prior arrangements must be made with the principal.

COMPLAINTS OR CONCERNS

If a student or parent has a concern about a school policy or an employee, the following procedure should be followed in order to resolve the problem as quickly as possible:

1.  Contact the person with whom you have a complaint to discuss both sides of the story.

2.  If the problem still exists, contact the principal.

3.  If still unresolved, contact the superintendent.

4.  Finally, if unresolved, ask the superintendent to place the complaint on the next available Board of Education                 agenda for further discussion.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES  (Cell phones, iPads, iPods, Kindles, Toys, etc.)

Cell phones, iPads, GameBoys, iPods, etc., may not be used at school during the school day (8:00 a.m. – 4:10 p.m.) and need to be turned off during the school day. Classroom teachers MAY give students permission to use an electronic device in an individual classroom for educational purposes.  This is at the discretion of the teacher and applies only to that classroom on that day.  The device is the responsibility of the student, not the teachers or the school.  Headphones and airpods are not allowed to be out (or in students’ ears) unless students are using them with permission in a classroom. Additionally, we ask that students keep toys at home unless they have permission from a teacher to use the toy at school.  Students who choose to use their electronic devices when they do not have permission (or whose phones/devices alert or ring), will have the device confiscated and taken to the office.  For the first offense, students may pick up the device at the end of the day.  For additional offenses, the device will only be returned to the student’s parents; parents will need to come to the office to retrieve the device.

FACEBOOK

Facebook and other social media sites aren’t to be used at school unless a teacher is using it for classroom instruction.

FIRE DRILLS

Fire Drills will be conducted periodically throughout the school year.  Everyone will move in an orderly and silent manner to points directed by their teachers where roll will be taken.  If the fire alarm rings when students are in the hallways, they should leave through the nearest exit.   Any student who fails to comply with the emergency evacuation procedure, or is disruptive during an evacuation drill, will be subject to disciplinary action.   If a student pulls the fire alarm, law enforcement will be notified.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES AT SCHOOL

Gum is not permitted at school.  Quick, portable snacks (granola bars, string cheese, etc.) are allowed during snack time.  Your child’s teacher will notify you of allergies in the classroom if it is necessary to limit certain snacks, for example, peanuts, peanut butter, etc. As part of our mission to be a healthy school, soda pop and energy drinks (highly caffeinated beverages) are not allowed at GES between 7:30 - 4:30 on school days.  Water is the only beverage students are allowed to have in classrooms.  We ask that students have either water or milk with lunch/breakfast.

HALL CONDUCT

Students are asked to observe rules of common courtesy and orderliness.  In order to facilitate passing, students are requested to observe the following hall regulations:

1.        Do not run or push in the halls.

2.        Report to your classroom quickly and quietly.

HARASSMENT/SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Harassment, sexual or otherwise, of an individual or group of people will not be permitted.  The definition of harassment used for this purpose shall be:  any form of unwanted, deliberate or offensive behavior that has been asked to be stopped.

HAZING

Hazing or initiations in any form are prohibited.  Any program that intends to embarrass or ridicule students will not be permitted.

INDELICATE DISPLAY OF AFFECTION

Students who relate to one another in a manner inappropriate in the educational environment (romantic embracing, kissing, etc.) will be requested to act in an appropriate manner.  Continued misconduct will result in parental contact.

LOST AND FOUND

Students who find lost articles (clothes and books) are asked to take them to the lost and found in the hallway outside of the office.  Students are not to claim articles from the lost and found that do not belong to them.

MOTORIZED VEHICLES AT SCHOOL ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

Elementary  school students may not bring cars, snowmobiles, motor bikes, or any other motorized vehicle onto school property.  Legal motorized transportation, such as electric scooters, may be used by students to get to and from school.  However, once at school, these devices may not be used again until after the dismissal bell.

OFFICE PHONE

Use of the office phone will be allowed for emergencies only at the discretion of the principal and secretaries.  An office student phone is available before and after school, and during lunch. Students are NOT to use their cell phone for any reason during the school day.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-Teacher conferences and other events to learn more about your student’s education are scheduled throughout the year. Please make every effort to attend.  If you wish to meet with teachers at other times during the year, please call the office to set up a meeting.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

When a student is in attendance, a note from a parent/guardian is required for that student to be excused from participation in P.E. for that day due to illness or injury.  If a student is to be excused from P.E. for two days or longer, a physician’s note is required.

POSTERS

Any posters advertising an out of school activity must be cleared with the main office before they may
be posted.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards will be shared every semester.  Teachers will include comments on report cards at the end of first and second semester.

SCHOOL CLOSURE

Students and parents are reminded that weather conditions may exist to require an emergency school closing.  This is always done in the interest of student safety. Please listen to the radio for announcements.  Information will be broadcast over KOA 850AM and KRKY 930AM. Since communication can be an issue and parents and/or students may be unaware of a school closure, every reasonable attempt will be made for buses to run their regular routes so students are not “left” at bus stops.  All bused students will be brought to school, unless they can be released to the safety of a parent or guardian at the bus stop.

Once a school closure exists, but a student is at school, whether bused, walked or driven, parents will be contacted to determine a plan to release the student.  Children will not be returned to a bus stop.  Students cannot walk or be released to another driver without parents’ knowledge and consent. It is the practice of the District not to have delayed openings or early releases. In the event of stormy weather, the District respects the parents’ right to pick up their children from school or keep their children home for the day.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE

Granby Elementary School strives to maintain an environment that is safe for all students and is conducive to learning.  In order to foster this learning environment, Granby Elementary has a dress code.  All students
will dress in the proper attire.  It is the parents’ and students’ responsibility to ensure compliance with the
dress code.
The school board recognizes students have a right to express themselves through dress and personal appearance; however, students shall not wear apparel that is deemed disruptive or potentially disruptive to the classroom environment or to the maintenance of a safe and orderly learning environment and can set the tone for serious work.

Dress Code Enforcement

The faculty and staff of GES will interpret and enforce the student dress code. Any student deemed in violation of the dress code shall be required to change into appropriate clothing or make arrangements to have appropriate clothing brought to school immediately. In this case, there shall be no further penalty.

SKATEBOARDS / SCOOTERS / SKATES / ROLLER BLADES, ETC.

Students may use these devices to get to and from school.  However, they may not be ridden on school property (students should walk once they are on school grounds).  This means students may not ride in the parking lot, on sidewalks, the basketball court or lawn/any play area.

SNOWBALL THROWING

Since snowballing is dangerous, it is prohibited in the building, on the school grounds or at any school sponsored activity.

SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer school will be offered as an option for students and families wanting additional educational opportunities.

SOLICITING

Soliciting is not allowed on school property unless approval has been received from the principal.

TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks are loaned to the student by the school district.  Students are required to record his/her name in ink on the front label, and to return the book in reasonable condition.

Students are responsible for replacing all books lost, stolen, or otherwise rendered useless, regardless of the reason for loss or damage.  At the time the book is issued, the student should check the book for wear.  If pages are missing or the book is otherwise damaged, the student should discuss this with his/her teacher so that he/she will not be charged for the damage.

VALUABLES AT SCHOOL

Students, not the school, are responsible for their personal property.  Personal property should be taken home after school and when at school kept in the student’s possession.  Be smart and take care of any valuable items by leaving them at home.  These valuables include money, IPods, cameras, cell phones, trading cards, etc.

VOLUNTEERS

There are many opportunities and a great need for parents to assist teachers and students during the school day.  Teachers will send home a request for volunteer support early in the school year.  Do offer any assistance you can provide.  Many tasks could be completed at home if you are unable to come to the school during the day.  Your help is critical to the success of the educational program.

WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL

Students withdrawing from school must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have a signed letter from them requesting withdrawal.  A student withdrawing from school must pick up a check-out sheet in the main office.  It must be signed by each of the student's teachers, the librarian, and food service.  The check-out sheet must then be returned to the office for final clearance.  One full school day should be allowed for student check-out.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Appropriate student behavior and self-discipline are essential to the education process. This is the dual responsibility of the home and school. Mutual cooperation among teachers, administration, and parents is necessary to encourage acceptable student behavior. To ensure maximum educational benefits for all students, each student has the responsibility to know and abide by the regulations of the school.  One of the most important lessons is self-discipline. Self-discipline does not appear as a subject; it underlies the whole educational structure. It is the training that develops self-control, character, orderliness, and efficiency.  Students are expected to maintain standards of behavior that are acceptable to the majority of their peers, school personnel, parents and community. Any behavior that prevents a teacher from teaching or that interrupts the opportunity for other students to learn is not acceptable.

Student Conduct

It is the intention of the Board of Education that the district's schools help students achieve maximum development of individual knowledge, skills and competence and that they learn behavior patterns which will enable them to be responsible, contributing members of society.

The Board, in accordance with applicable law, has adopted a written student conduct and discipline code based upon the principle that every student is expected to follow accepted rules of conduct and to show respect for and to obey persons in authority. The code emphasizes that certain behavior, especially behavior that disrupts the classroom, is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action. The code shall be enforced uniformly, fairly and consistently for all students.

All Board-adopted policies and Board-approved regulations containing the letters “JIC” in the file name constitute the conduct section of the legally required code.

The Board shall consult with parents/guardians, students, teachers, administrators and other community members in the development and review of the conduct and discipline code.

The conduct and discipline code shall be provided to each student upon enrollment in elementary, middle and high school. The district shall take reasonable measures to ensure each student is familiar with the code. Copies shall be posted or kept on file in each school of the district. In addition, any significant change in the code shall be provided to students and posted in each school.

In all instances, students shall be expected to conduct themselves in keeping with their level of maturity, acting with due regard for the supervisory authority vested by the Board in all district employees, the educational purpose underlying all school activities, the widely shared use of district property, and the rights and welfare of other students and staff. All employees of the district shall be expected to share the responsibility for supervising the behavior of students and for seeing that they abide by the conduct and discipline code.
