Updates and Reminders for the week ending May 2

This Week We…

Math:  We are wrapping up Topic D this week which included the following: Students extend a number line to include fractions greater than 1 by drawing and partitioning number lines that represent specified intervals. They count and skip-count by fractional units to name fractions greater than 1 and to recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers.

ELA:. In Wit and Wisdom, we read “Tea With Milk” also written by Alan Say.  Students compared and contrasted the story elements from Tea With Milk with Grandfather’s Journey.  Students listened to Family Pictures and analyzed a character.  Students listened to another read aloud, Coming to America, a new informational text. Students asked and answered questions and analyzed how an author engages and orients the reader in a narrative.

 In Fundations, we continued working in Unit 7. Students also explored exceptions when the i isn’t changed and the suffix is added. (baby + ish = babyish)

Science/ Social Studies: kicked off a unit on force and motion.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):  learned about Arabic culture.

Next Week We Will…

Math: Students will work on Topic E, the last topic in this module. With a progression of strategies similar to those in earlier topics, students use one or two number lines to find pairs of equivalent fractions greater than 1.

ELA: In Wit and Wisdom, students will continue working with Coming to America.  Students will create a timeline that shows key moments in the story of immigration to America and determine the essential meaning of the text.  We will also read The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco.  Students will sequence multiple generations in The Keeping Quilt and identify how the quilt was used in each generation.

In Fundations, we will wrap up Unit 7. We will continue to learn how to pluralize words ending in y in an open syllable (i.e. family/families) and how to pluralize words ending in o in an open syllable (i.e. potato-potatoes).

Science/ Social Studies:  explore speed and direction resulting from forces.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): 

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):  This week we will learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder by watching this video created by Jumo Health and having class discussions. Learn more about Autism at autismspeaks.org.

Moments to Celebrate!

AMOS did a fun lesson with us where students got to experiment with trucks carrying various weights to knock down block towers.
