2018 Minnesota Summer Tour Rules and Information
Effective in 2018, the below changes to the MST rules and information will take place.
*ALL MST EVENTS ARE PDGA SANCTIONED*
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE MINNESOTA SUMMER TOUR (MST)?
The Minnesota Summer Tour (MST) started in the late 1970s and is the longest running disc golf tournament series in the country.
HOW CAN A MFA MEMBERSHIP BENEFIT ME WHEN COMPETING IN MST EVENTS?
By being a MFA member on or before the day you compete in a MST or MDS event allows you to accumulate MST/MDS points. The top qualified finishers in both Pro and Am divisions receive CASH payouts at the end-of-the-year awards that are held at the MFA Fall membership Meeting in November of each year. A minimum of $1 from the per player MST/MDS sanctioning fees shall be used towards year end payouts; this does not include the cost of trophies.
HOW IS THE POINT SYSTEM CALCULATED?
This is a point system invented by Joe Feidt, and later updated by Chuck Kennedy, for the Minnesota Frisbee Association.
Players earn points by competing in MST events. Once a player has competed in at least five MST tournaments, he or she is eligible for year-end prizes. A player's top five scores (in terms of points) are what count for the final season-end total.
Points are calculated as follows:
Example: Assume a division with 38 players.
First place would receive 100 + (0.1 X 38) = 103.8 points.
Fourth place would receive 100 - ((4 - 1) X 24 / 38) = 98.1 points.
Last place would receive 100 - ((38 - 1) X 24 / 38) = 76.6 points.
HOW MANY EVENTS DO I HAVE TO PLAY TO QUALIFY TO BE IN THE RUNNING FOR MST PAYOUTS?
One, to compete for the division championship. A player must play a minimum of five (in at least 3 zones) to compete for year-end payouts. However, the more events you play the better your chances are of finishing higher in the overall standings.
SO I QUALIFIED FOR PAYOUTS. AM I GUARANTEED TO GET PAID?
Historically the MFA used to pay out every person that qualified in every division. We adjusted this for certain divisions. Here's how it breaks down.
We feel this system rewards our top competitors with a relatively larger payday while still rewarding a large amount of players in our more entry level divisions.
HOW MANY OF THE EVENTS ARE THE MST’S JUDGED ON?
The Top 5 scores (must play at least 3 zones), including either MN Majestic or MN State Championships, per player, per division are totaled. A player may only qualify for one division per season.
HOW CAN I BECOME A TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR OF A MST OR MDS EVENT?
Let the MFA know that you are interested in doing so, get MFA approval, and sign an MST Sanctioning Agreement. Once the given year's MST schedule is posted events are generally not added. If you'd like to be an MST for the following year the best time to contact the board is in late November or early December.
CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE MST EVENT ON A GIVEN DAY?
The MFA hasn't done so up to this point and does not plan to going forward.
