Reactive / Proactive Example

Reactive Example:

Let’s say I need to leave early the next morning to attend a funeral. The night before, I don’t take the time to think through my day — especially what I’m going to do for food. I plan to leave within 30 minutes of waking up, so there's no time to prepare a breakfast that fits the diet I'm following to lose weight. Once I’m out, someone I’m with gets hungry and asks to stop at a fast food place. I end up grabbing something too, even though it doesn’t align with my goals. That’s a reactive day — I didn’t plan, so I defaulted to convenience and emotion in the moment.

Proactive Example:

Now let’s flip that. If I’m being proactive, I think about my day the night before. I ask, “What’s the outcome I want?” — in this case, staying on track with my eating and moving closer to my weight loss goal. I realize I won’t have time to cook in the morning, so I prep a quick breakfast the night before or pack something portable to take with me. That way, I’ve already made the decision ahead of time, and when I’m out, I’m not relying on willpower — I’m following a system I put in place to help me succeed.
