The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This book is very much a commentary on the unfortunate incidents and their aftermaths that we occasionally hear coming out of the US.  

Sixteen year old Starr lives in a poor black neighbourhood but attends a posh high school in the suburbs. One weekend, she attends a party and is driven home by her friend Khalil. They are stopped by police. When Khalil exits the car, he leans back into the car to check on Starr but one of the policemen misreads the action and shoots him dead. We then follow Starr and her friends - white and black - as the criminal responsibility of the police is assessed and see how the reactions of the two different communities play out when decisions are made about the police’s culpability.
