Many high schools focus on the career path for actors in college. We plan on touching on how we arrived at pursuing theatre B.A.’s at the University of Southern California. Since we would like our workshop to be discussion based we would open with getting a sense of who is in the room to tailor our sharing based on that. For the basics we would cover, the “theater hierarchy” a.k.a role that they might not get to pursue in high school like production management, general management and explain the breakdown of responsibilities in professional theater. Then we’d touch on producing as well as dramaturgy, literary review and the academic/critical studies side of the industry. The largest section of the session would be discussing what pursuing theater in college is actually like- the time commitment of working on a show while being a full time student, types and fields of study (BA vs. BFA) and our experiences working on both curricular and student run theater in college. After breaking down that technical knowledge, we would want to essentially present the students with a list of topics that we both are knowledgeable in and just open up a discussion. While we both studied theatre in college, Domenica also received a degree in history and primarily works in experimental performance while Sarah is an entertainment industry minor currently interning and pursuing work in film and television. Growing up, both of us participated in thespian festivals- Domenica in California and Sarah in Georgia. Having a workshop where we would have been able to learn and just talk to current/recently graduated college students about theatre in college as a non-performer would have been so wonderful. We’d really want the students to have the opportunity to try and learn from our successes (and mistakes) in college and if they choose to major as a non-performer understand what they’d be undertaking. We also have current experience in applying for jobs and internships in the pandemic and have witnessed how it has affected the industry from an entry-level perspective.

Your story is important. This interactive workshop covers the steps needed to get from idea to script and then from page to stage. Writing and producing your own work is essential to your development as an artist. How do you create new works and how do you take them from the page to the stage? This workshop gives tips, tricks and tools for telling your story and getting it in front of an audience. OPTIONAL: Students are invited to bring a one paragraph pitch of their project for discussion. What we'll cover: Honing your idea into a story. Is it a one-act, full-length play, movie or TV show? Writing it down. What to do if you’re stuck? Your Idea/Project/Script is great! Is it producible? Commit to the hill – Figure out what your show is about and stick to it. Bit by Bit - Sondheim had it right. Nothing is sacred – Cut everything that isn’t essential to telling your story. Submit or Self-Produce? Producing a reading vs producing a show FAST – CHEAP – GOOD: Pick two. Can you ever get all three? How to ask for help. How to game the system. When to trust your instincts and when to listen to your team and your audience. What if you fail? What if you succeed?

It’s just a little different than what you may hear about female belting. This class, strictly for students who identify as male, will help you open-up, and brighten-up that upper-register, male belt that is essential to singing modern musical theatre! Bring 16-32 bars of a contemporary Musical Theatre Song and an accompaniment track.
Saved by the Belt: Don’t Screech! A Master Class for Belters! Do you know what the first two things were that you did on this planet after being born? You took a breath, then you BELTED! Yes, EVERYONE CAN BELT. You already know how; you just don’t know how to use it. This class is for belters who identify as female. Please bring 16-32 bars of your best belt song and an accompaniment track.
Wynn Marlow has had a lifelong love affair with the art and craft of acting, on stage and for camera. She studied with the best, including Michael Shurtleff and Estelle Harmon. Wynn taught Shurtleff's method as descrbed in his book "Audition!" for years. She worked as a casting associate on dozens of movies, television shows, and commercials. Eventually Wynn began directing plays, two favorites being The Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henley, and Island of Brilliance by Dawn O'Leary at the Pacific Resident Theater in Venice, California. | Auditions & Cold Readings The workshop would teach how to prepare for an audition, distinguishing between media such as plays, published and unpublished, and film and television. We would discuss how to conduct yourself in the audition room to make the best possible impression. We would deal with studying text in preparation for the audition, learning a scene or sides, exploring the text for clues as to character and relationships. We would also deal with cold reading. Every student would have an opportunity to do a cold reading and a mock audition. |
