Tech Talk: Answering Your Questions About Technical Theatre and Producing in College

Our workshop will be a discussion based session focused on pursuing theater as a non-performer in college and what the industry looks like for immediately post-grad. Many high schools focus on the career path for actors in college. We plan on touching on how we arrived at pursuing theatre B.A.’s at the University of Southern California.

Since we would like our workshop to be discussion based we would open with getting a sense of who is in the room to tailor our sharing based on that. For the basics we would cover, the “theater hierarchy” a.k.a role that they might not get to pursue in high school like production management, general management and explain the breakdown of responsibilities in professional theater. Then we’d touch on producing as well as dramaturgy, literary review and the academic/critical studies side of the industry. The largest section of the session would be discussing what pursuing theater in college is actually like- the time commitment of working on a show while being a full time student, types and fields of study (BA vs. BFA) and our experiences working on both curricular and student run theater in college.

After breaking down that technical knowledge, we would want to essentially present the students with a list of topics that we both are knowledgeable in and just open up a discussion. While we both studied theatre in college, Domenica also received a degree in history and primarily works in experimental performance while Sarah is an entertainment industry minor currently interning and pursuing work in film and television.

Growing up, both of us participated in thespian festivals- Domenica in California and Sarah in Georgia. Having a workshop where we would have been able to learn and just talk to current/recently graduated college students about theatre in college as a non-performer would have been so wonderful. We’d really want the students to have the opportunity to try and learn from our successes (and mistakes) in college and if they choose to major as a non-performer understand what they’d be undertaking. We also have current experience in applying for jobs and internships in the pandemic and have witnessed how it has affected the industry from an entry-level perspective.

Kenzie Robinson is current a student going into her final year at Azusa Pacific University where she will receive her BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen. She has been performing for 16 years and has been studying theater/movement in school for 6 years now. She has performed at several theaters in the area, including the Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont. In addition, she has also taught workshops and classes at Foothill Christian School. With a heavy background in musical theater, Kenzie has made the switch to focus on more plays and on screen acting. Movement, specifically, has become a passion of hers over the years. She has studied various techniques, including styles by Lecoq and Alexander. Movement has completely changed not only her acting, but her daily life and she hopes to share the light movement brings her with other students looking to pursue the arts in higher education.

Movement 101

Movement 101 is a class based on the movement technique and teachings of Jacques Lecoq. In his teachings, Lecoq emphasizes the importance of continuously creating and exploring art. This class will be an introduction into movement technique for the actor. Students will learn to play and storytell using their bodies as the primary medium. It will focus on the art of play and being able to create movement inspired art pieces, while also learning to let them exist and fade regardless of "success" or "failure". So much of modern art is creating the newest, biggest, best piece that will stand out. This class will focus on returning to the basics, connecting with self, and reigniting the fire that made us fall in love with performance. Although Lecoq will be the main inspiration, this class will also cover basic movement techniques including a physical warm up, an introduction to viewpoints and beginning ensemble work. Students should attend this class because the body is the most important element in performance. It is the one thing we have always had and will always have with us. Our bodies and our actions speaks louder than words. Movement can tell an entire story to anyone across the world, regardless of language boundaries. Our body is the most powerful tool we hold as performers. It is how we connect with ourselves, with others and the world around us, so it is imperative that we learn to use it to enhance our capabilities.

Securing Scholarships Strategies

Colleges and Universities offer many various types of scholarships: merit, need, identity, academic department, etc. Each type of scholarship has a specific application. Strategies for completing these forms effectively, sample applications, and examples of successful submissions will be presented.

LGBTQ+ Experiences: HS, College & Beyond

Hear from members and allies of LGBTQ+ college and alumni groups about the challenges/opportunities for queer students. A safe space for participants to share your experiences and receive support are the main goals. Discuss being your authentic self while applying to college and scholarships. We’ll look at resources and organizations that serve LGBTQ+ students and allies. We’ll use Kahoots, games, and activities to avoid unneeded drama as you navigate LGBTQ+ life after high school and beyond.

Putting it Together: The Art of Creating New Works

New works and diverse voices are needed now more than ever. Your story is important. This interactive workshop covers the steps needed to get from idea to script and then from page to stage. Writing and producing your own work is essential to your development as an artist. How do you create new works and how do you take them from the page to the stage? This workshop gives tips, tricks and tools for telling your story and getting it in front of an audience. OPTIONAL: Students are invited to bring a one paragraph pitch of their project for discussion.

What we'll cover:

Honing your idea into a story. Is it a one-act, full-length play, movie or TV show?

Writing it down. What to do if you’re stuck?

Your Idea/Project/Script is great! Is it producible?

Commit to the hill – Figure out what your show is about and stick to it.

Bit by Bit - Sondheim had it right.

Nothing is sacred – Cut everything that isn’t essential to telling your story.

Submit or Self-Produce?

Producing a reading vs producing a show

FAST – CHEAP – GOOD: Pick two. Can you ever get all three?

How to ask for help.

How to game the system.

When to trust your instincts and when to listen to your team and your audience.

What if you fail? What if you succeed?

Musical Theatre Exploration Clinic

Music, Movement, and Storytelling come together in this fun, focused clinic. Thomas will work with students with the goal of emphasizing individual strengths and talents, improving connection to material, exploring context, authenticity, technique, purposeful movement, and improved performance. Using, at times, unconventional methods, he will customize his approach according to each performer. (Students will only need 16-32 bars of a song they can sing a capella).

Tim Evanicki is a Juilliard-educated voice teacher and singer, who has traveled extensively, singing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Tim has prepared his students go on to follow in his footsteps, attending some of the nation’s leading music schools and musical theater programs. He has been preparing students for their college auditions for 18 years.

Bro-Belting

A belting masterclass for singers who identify as male. Boys can belt, too! It’s just a little different than what you may hear about female belting. This class, strictly for students who identify as male, will help you open-up, and brighten-up that upper-register, male belt that is essential to singing modern musical theatre! Bring 16-32 bars of a contemporary Musical Theatre Song and an accompaniment track.

Saved by the Belt: Don’t Screech! A Master Class for Belters!

Do you know what the first two things were that you did on this planet after being born? You took a breath, then you BELTED! Yes, EVERYONE CAN BELT. You already know how; you just don’t know how to use it. This class is for belters who identify as female. Please bring 16-32 bars of your best belt song and an accompaniment track.

Wynn Marlow has had a lifelong love affair with the art and craft of acting, on stage and for camera. She studied with the best, including Michael Shurtleff and Estelle Harmon. Wynn taught Shurtleff's method as descrbed in his book "Audition!" for years. She worked as a casting associate on dozens of movies, television shows, and commercials. Eventually Wynn began directing plays, two favorites being The Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henley, and Island of Brilliance by Dawn O'Leary at the Pacific Resident Theater in Venice, California.

Auditions & Cold Readings

The workshop would teach how to prepare for an audition, distinguishing between media such as plays, published and unpublished, and film and television. We would discuss how to conduct yourself in the audition room to make the best possible impression. We would deal with studying text in preparation for the audition, learning a scene or sides, exploring the text for clues as to character and relationships. We would also deal with cold reading. Every student would have an opportunity to do a cold reading and a mock audition.

“Go BIG, or you've blown it. It's time that you own it.”  - Barry, The Prom
