Basic Design

This course is an introductory year long intensive study of the elements and principles of design and their use through classroom projects. Students explore a variety of media, both 2D and 3D, while mastering the use of technical art materials. Students learn to respond to their work as well as that of others. Drawing and Painting I

This course is a yearlong course for freshmen offering an introductory drawing course that provides experiences in line, value, and space using a variety of media and subjects. The painting portion gives the students an opportunity to solve color and painting problems in tempera, watercolor, and mixed media techniques. An examination of historical artwork gallery visits and visiting artists will correspond to assignments. Note: Visual Arts Magnet required first year course.

Ceramics and Sculpture I

This course is a yearlong course offering one semester of ceramics and one semester of sculpture. Students in ceramics construct hand built and wheel turned pieces that are glazed and fired. Sculpture students explore additions, subtraction, modeled and cast construction techniques.

Drawing and Painting II

This is a yearlong course for sophomores offering continued study in drawing techniques, providing experiences in line, value, and space using a variety of media and subjects. This is a yearlong course offering continued study in two-dimensional media with assignments planned by the Instructor and student for individual students and projects assigned to the entire class. Assignments are prepared for use in a senior art portfolio. Students explore landscapes, portraits, still-life, and abstractions with a variety of media and subjects. An examination of historical artwork, gallery visits and visiting artists will correspond to assignments.

Studio Art 3/Textiles and Printmaking I

Prerequisite(s):  Admission to VA, Ceramics and Sculpture I and Drawing/Painting II

This is a yearlong course offering one semester of textiles and one semester of printmaking. The textiles semester introduces the student to surface design and fiber construction. Students explore mixed media, stitchery, and batik techniques. Students in printmaking explore relief, intaglio, and surface media for one semester. The students are encouraged to link their art experience and skill in a cross-curricular manner. Students are exposed to historical and cultural importance of the usage in this media throughout the term. Note: Visual Arts Magnet required 3rd year course.

This is a yearlong course exploring in depth experiences in the four basic methods of graphic images: relief, lithography, intaglio, and silk screen. Experimental techniques in making printed images are introduced. During the class, students will respond to their own artworks, and that of others. Textiles 2

This is a yearlong course extending the Textiles I experience in surface design and fiber construction. The student and Instructor collaborate in choosing assignments. Products reflect individual interests, talents, and facets of textile exploration. Students learn to respond to products of their own and others in written and oral critiques. Visual Art I

This course is the foundation course in art for the high school student. In the course, the student receives instruction in the studio areas—design, drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles—that increase basic art skills developed in the middle school art program. The course provides experiences to increase student knowledge and ability through art history, analysis of form, aesthetics, cultural heritage, and art production. The student is introduced to career options in the visual arts. Visual Art I prepares the student for Visual Art II, Folk art and Craft, and 3D Art courses.

Visual Art 2

This is a course in which the student is involved in challenging studio problems in the arts and crafts areas and in art history, art criticism, and aesthetic material related to full development of the talent/interest of the individual. In Visual Art II the student begins to select work for a portfolio to be used for career or technical pursuits. Students explore further career options in the visual arts.

Visual Art 3

This course is an advanced course in art in which the student works on Instructor-planned and individually selected problems to develop art and craft. Experiences in art history, cultural heritage, analysis of form, aesthetics—which complement the studio experience—are integral parts of the course. The student in Visual Art III is expected to keep a portfolio of artwork that reflects developing technical skills.

Visual Art 4

Visual Communication Design

(Graphic Design)

This is a yearlong course using software packages and graphics computers and printers to produce computer-generated art forms. The course is divided into sections: two-dimensional graphic images as completed art forms; two-dimensional graphics images for commercial art; and use of computers as preparation tools for other art media.

3-D Art

This is a course that examines different types of three-dimensional art. Students work in clay, sculpture, and other three dimensional techniques and processes, exploring a variety of media, while mastering the use of technical art materials. During the class, students will respond to their own artworks, and that of others. An examination of historical artwork will correspond to assignments.

Photography I

This is an introductory course in which the student is introduced to basic camera and photographic darkroom techniques. During the school year, the student learns to plan and produce photographic images that reflect an understanding of laboratory processes emphasizing usage of elements and principles of design. Students explore photography job opportunities.

Photography 2

This is a course in which the student refines the skills related to the production of images that reflect an understanding of composition, lighting, camera, and darkroom processes and techniques. The Photography II student is expected to begin to develop a portfolio of photographic images. Experiences that increase understanding and knowledge of the history, criticism, and aesthetic quality of photographic images should also be included.

AP Art History is designed to allow students to examine major forms of artistic expression from the past to the present in a variety of cultures. Students will learn to look at works of art critically and express what they have seen or experienced. This follows the College Board AP Art History Curriculum and students are expected to take the exam in the spring for college credit.  Note: College level curriculum taught in a high school setting.
