Criteria for Enrollment*Please attach a TYPED, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, one-page essay about your future educational and career plans. Please explain how participating in a career awareness program will help you achieve your goals. Essays may be submitted by May 24th via email to: mindy.hutchins@mcdowell.k12.nc.us The prospective member must meet the following requirements: Have a good school attendance record.

Note: This application is a screening process, not a guarantee of enrollment. Students and parents will be notified by email or phone of enrollment in CARP and be asked to attend a kick-off meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21st, 2024 at 6:00 pm at the MHS CTE Conference room. Students must attend all site visits in order to fully complete the program.

CARP frequently asked questions
Q: Who should consider this program?
A: Any 8th-grade student who is interested in learning more about careers right here in McDowell County.
Q: Is there a cost for this program?
A: No. This program provides everything you need! Thanks to the generosity of McDowell County Schools, McDowell County Chamber of Commerce, McDowell County Workforce Pipeline, McDowell Technical Community College, and area businesses, you will be provided transportation, lunch, and any other supplies that may be required.
Q: Will CARP trips be during the school day?
A: Yes. This means you will be responsible for making up any work you have missed during the CARP trips. Principals and teachers will be notified of the dates you will be out. You will return to school in time to participate in afternoon classes and sports.
Q: What will we get to do?
A: CARP participants stay busy! You will meet with area professionals in their businesses and off-site at McDowell Tech & McDowell High. You will also have the opportunity to prepare for your future by improving your skill set through fun activities and lunchtime meetings.
Q: What will I get out of participating?
A: CARP students will better understand careers and the education required to pursue those careers. CARP students will feel confident about identifying their own strengths and interests. CARP students will be mentored (by former CARP students) when they begin their 9th-grade year at MHS.
