The Harshman Family - Student - Teacher Association is hosting a summer skating party at the Roller Cave, 8734 E 21st St, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Admission costs are $9 for skaters and $5 for spectators. This is not a drop-off event, a parent or guardian should plan to stay. New Harshman students and graduating Harshman students are all welcome.

ALL IPS devices and technology (chargers and mifis) are due back to Harshman on TOMORROW, MONDAY, May 18 !

Field Day

Field Day is on Monday, the 18th as well! Students need to bring their own water bottle and are encouraged to dress in the following colors:

6th grade – RED

7th grade – BLACK

8th grade – GREEN

No more backpacks

Tomorrow is also the last day for backpacks! Students will not need a backpack after Monday, May 18.

Pantry

Our pantry will be open on Wednesday, the 20th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Honors Day for 8th graders

A reminder for 8th grade parents that our Honors Day program will take place in the Arsenal Tech Auditorium at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

Last Day of School

This Thursday, May 21st,  is the last day of school for ALL students. What a fun 2025 - 2026 school year it has been!

Hello, Vikings!

We will close out teacher appreciation week in the most special way this Friday – by giving students an opportunity to tattoo a teacher! You read that right (we really DO have the most amazing and dedicated teachers at Harshman!). Students may pay $3 or $5, cash -- to tattoo a teacher! This is a fundraiser for our staff and student activities fund. We can’t wait to see who ends up with a forehead tattoo!

A special thanks to our FSTA for spoiling staff with lots of delicious food this week! THANK YOU!

• ILEARN testing begins this week! Please make sure your student is on time and present each school day. Also – it is very important that all students bring their devices each day FULLY CHARGED.

• Pantry will be open on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring your own bags.

• On Thursday, April 23rd, head to the Chic-Fil-A at 6231 N. Keystone Ave. for breakfast, lunch or dinner and support our Dual Language students heading to Costa Rica this summer. Mention “Harshman Spirit Day” during check out. For mobile orders – use “Harshman” (cap sensitive).

• On Friday, our Student Council and FSTA will host the Spring Dance and there are still lots of spots open to volunteer and lots of spots for needed snack donations. Please SIGN UP HERE if you are able to support! The students are excited but we need your help to make it happen.

NEW DATE: Tactical Urbanism / Street Art Project: SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

It looks like the weather doesn’t want to cooperate for Saturday so we are moving forward with having this event on SUNDAY, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join us for a community Tactical Urbanism project on East 10th Street in front of Harshman Middle School and Theodore Potter Elementary. To increase safety on 10th Street for walkers, cyclers, and cars, we are installing a temporary street art project on East 10th Street across from Harshman and Potter schools. We need school and community volunteers to clean and prepare the streets for painting, divert traffic, place bollards, and assist the artist with sketching and painting the design on the roadway. We will provide safety vests and all tools and supplies needed. We will provide instructions, no experience is necessary. This event is made possible through a grant from Safe Routes to School, administered by Health by Design.

NUEVA FECHA:Proyecto de Urbanismo Táctico / Arte Callejero: DOMINGO 19 DE ABRIL, DE 9:00 A 15:00.

Parece que el tiempo no va a cooperar para el sábado, así que seguiremos adelante con la celebración de este evento el DOMINGO 19 de abril de 9:00 a 15:00 horas.

Únase a nosotros para un proyecto comunitario de Urbanismo Táctico en la Calle 10 Este, frente a la Escuela Secundaria Harshman y la Escuela Primaria Theodore Potter. Para aumentar la seguridad en la Calle 10 para peatones, ciclistas y automovilistas, instalaremos un proyecto temporal de arte urbano en la Calle 10 Este, frente a las escuelas Harshman y Potter. Necesitamos voluntarios de la escuela y la comunidad para limpiar y preparar las calles para pintar, desviar el tráfico, colocar bolardos y ayudar al artista a dibujar y pintar el diseño en la calzada. Proporcionaremos chalecos de seguridad y todas las herramientas y materiales necesarios. Brindaremos instrucciones; no se requiere experiencia. Este evento es posible gracias a una subvención de Rutas Seguras a la Escuela, administrada por Health by Design.

Bicycle Safety and Maintenance Class: Thursday, April 16, 4 - 6 p.m., Harshman Gymnasium

Students and families can sign up to attend our free Nine13 Bicycle safety and maintenance class on Thursday April 16th from 4-6pm. Learn how to navigate safely in traffic, change a flat tire, and tune up your bicycle for the spring.

Urbanismo táctico / Proyecto de arte callejero: sábado 18 de abril, de 9:00 a 15:00.

Únete a nosotros en un proyecto comunitario de Urbanismo Táctico en la Calle 10 Este, frente a la Escuela Secundaria Harshman y la Escuela Primaria Theodore Potter. Para aumentar la seguridad en la Calle 10 para peatones, ciclistas y automovilistas, instalaremos un proyecto temporal de arte urbano en la Calle 10 Este, frente a las escuelas Harshman y Potter. Students and families can sign up to attend our free Nine13 Bicycle safety and maintenance class on Thursday April 16th from 4-6pm. Learn how to navigate safely in traffic, change a flat tire, and tune up your bicycle for the spring.

Tactical Urbanism / Street Art Project: Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Join us for a community Tactical Urbanism project on East 10th Street in front of Harshman Middle School and Theodore Potter Elementary. To increase safety on 10th Street for walkers, cyclers, and cars, we are installing a temporary street art project on East 10th Street across from Harshman and Potter schools. We need school and community volunteers to clean and prepare the streets for painting, divert traffic, place bollards, and assist the artist with sketching and painting the design on the roadway. We will provide safety vests and all tools and supplies needed. We will provide instructions, no experience is necessary. This event is made possible through a grant from Safe Routes to School, administered by Health by Design.

Food pantry will be open on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lots of new items will be available so please come by and shop! Additionally, our annual Title I review and revision meeting will take place during food pantry hours as well. Student Progress Day

Student Progress Day will take place on Friday, March 27. Families may sign up for a conference with their student’s advisory teacher. All advisory conference links were sent out by Ms. Murphy on March 10 and again on March 18 (if you don’t see it in your inbox, email Mr. Pesut at pesutj@myips.org). This is an asynchronous learning day for students and they should check Schoology for assignments in their A Day classes.

La Academia Familiar del Distrito de Escuelas Públicas de Indianápolis se complace en verlo en la sesión de marzo de la Academia Familiar IPS, "Feria de Recursos y Bienestar de Verano",

Just a reminder, there is no school on Monday, February 16 in observance of President’s Day. Tuesday the 17th will be an asynchronous learning day. Students should check assignments in Schoology for their B day classes.

Save-the-date: 8th grade Honors Day

We are so excited to be celebrating our 8th graders on Thursday, May 21st at 10:00 a.m. in the Arsenal Tech Auditorium. Students can either arrive to Harshman as normal and our teachers will escort them to the ceremony OR students may be dropped off at Tech with their parent/guardian. The ceremony should conclude by 12:00 p.m. Students can be signed out by a parent at this time OR return to Harshman for the remainder of the day.

WIDA Testing begins next week

WIDA language testing is a way schools check how well students who are learning English understand and use the English language. The goal is to make sure students get the right support to succeed in school. Harshman will administer this test to English Language Learners by grade level over the next few weeks. Questions? Seal of Bileteracy and High Ability

Families – Did you know 8th graders can apply to earn their Seal of Biliteracy and Seal of High Ability (and additional honors at the end of the year celebration)? And new this year – 6th and 7th grade students can apply for a “On the Road” Seal of Biliteracy or High Ability that will allow students to reflect on their learning and start preparing for their 8th grade Seals! Check out our daily video announcements or ask your students about their advisory lesson from Friday. Students have until January 30 to apply.

Harshman Families – Due to anticipated inclement weather this evening, all after school activities have been canceled. This does include our Winter Music Concert that was scheduled for this evening.

The music department’s plan will be to have all Harshman music students come to school tomorrow, Dec. 12th, ready to perform in their concert black during the school day. We will record this performance and share with families. Thank you for your understanding.

On Monday, Dec. 8 representatives from Enroll Indy and the IPS Office of Recruitment and Retention will meet with 8th graders to select an IPS high school for the 2026 - 2027 school year. Winter Music Concert

Our Winter Music Concert will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11! Students need to be back at school at 6 p.m. on Thursday and the performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. All band, choir and orchestra students should plan on performing. Student performers need to be in concert black (this includes shoes). Jeans, workout pants, hoodies / sweatshirts are not permitted. If you need support in securing “concert black” items, please reach out to Mr. Dorsett or Mr. Pipkins as soon as possible.

With a record number of families visiting our food pantry in this last month – we were able to sustain supplies and make sure all visitors left with what they needed – thanks to you and your wonderful Viking students. Harshman’s food pantry will be open on Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reminder – this is open to all Harshman families. Please bring your own bags.

Our Kiwanis Club is requesting donations for some items that are always in high demand during pantry. If you are able, please donate the following items to support your fellow Vikings:

Music Department Fundraiser: Order Pick-up on 10/20/25:

Speaking of fundraisers, please see the below message from Mr. Dorsett:

The music department fundraiser Pick-Up is this Thursday, October 30, from 4:15–8:00 PM! Please drive around to the back of the school and come to Door 8 to pick up your order.

⚠️ All orders must be picked up that evening. Many items need to stay chilled or frozen, and we don’t have storage for them after Thursday night.

HERE is a spreadsheet with the total amount due for each student

• Preferred payment: Check made out to Harshman Middle School with “Music Department” in the memo. Bring your check to pick-up and handle payment right there.
• If you’ve already turned in some or all of the money, that may not be reflected yet in the spreadsheet—we’ll reconcile at pick-up and mark it paid.

As a reminder, all remaining funds are due by Friday, November 14.

You should have heard from your student’s advisory teacher about signing up for a parent teacher conference on Friday October 24. If that communication missed you, please email Mrs. Murphy at murphyca@myips.org so she can get you the link! Remember to share your student’s full name in your message.

Also, on October 24 from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. you are invited to attend our Annual Title I meeting in the Harshman Media Center. During this time our terrific partners at The Peace Learning Center will offer parents a Restorative Practices 101 Family workshop. Find out more about how restorative practices are used here at Harshman and how you can implement these communication tools at home with your middle schooler. We hope you can join us!

• We hope to see everyone tomorrow night (October 2) for our Voices from the Past: Inspiring our Future Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Come from 5 -7 p.m. for dancing, food and fun! Families – please enter through door 8.
• As part of our ongoing commitment to student and staff safety, and in accordance with Indiana Code 10-21-1-10, Harshman will be conducting a scheduled Armed Intruder Drill this week.

This drill is a proactive safety measure designed to help our students and staff practice the procedures they would follow in the unlikely event of an intruder situation.

We understand that drills like these can bring up questions or concerns. If you would like to discuss the drill further or feel your child may need additional support, please reach out to Harshman’s school counselor, Mr. Pesut (pesut j@myips.org)

Harshman Spelling Bee:

It is Scripps Spelling Bee season! All students have received the list of words through their English Language Arts classes. Classrooms spelling bees will take place around October 4 and then those winners will advance on to our official Harshman Spelling Bee on either December 2 or December 3.

The Shalom Health School-Based Clinic will be offering Sports Physicals to students this school year! Students requiring physicals for sports participation will be identified and notified by the athletics department. Advisory Summative 1 (6th and 7th Graders):

Students will have their first “assessment” in Advisory the week of September 3rd - 5th. It will be rolled out during Advisory lessons August 25th - 28th but for awareness, kids are expected to do 3 activities from the chart that form a line. It could be writing a Thank You Note to someone, sitting with someone new at lunch, etc. These 3 things must be done before September 3rd when students will be asked to reflect on the experience.

Advisory Summative 1 (8th Graders):

While 8th grade students will also have their first “assessment” in Advisory the week of September 3rd - 5th their focus is different. 8th graders are tasked simply with doing an “act of service” which could be small (picking up trash without being asked) to larger. In Advisory their graded Summative will include writing a single coherent paragraph reflecting on service.

No School 9/1 and 9/2:

In observance of Labor Day and IPS staff professional development, there will be no school on Monday, September 1 or Tuesday, September 2.

Evaluación Sumativa 1 de Asesoría (6.º y 7.º grado):

Los estudiantes tendrán su primera evaluación en Asesoría la semana del 3 al 5 de septiembre. Se realizará durante las clases de Asesoría del 25 al 28 de agosto, pero para concientizarlos, se espera que los estudiantes realicen tres actividades de la tabla que forman una línea. Podrían ser escribir una nota de agradecimiento, sentarse con alguien nuevo en el almuerzo, etc. Estas tres actividades deben completarse antes del 3 de septiembre, cuando se les pedirá a los estudiantes que reflexionen sobre la experiencia.

Evaluación Sumativa 1 de Asesoría (8.º grado):

Si bien los estudiantes de 8.º grado también tendrán su primera evaluación en Asesoría la semana del 3 al 5 de septiembre, el enfoque es diferente. Se les asigna simplemente una tarea de servicio, que puede ser desde pequeña (recoger basura sin que se les pida) hasta más extensa. En Asesoría, su evaluación Sumativa incluirá escribir un párrafo coherente que reflexione sobre el servicio.

No hay clases el 1 y 2 de septiembre:

En conmemoración del Día del Trabajo y el desarrollo profesional del personal de IPS, no habrá clases el lunes 1 de septiembre ni el martes 2 de septiembre.

FSTA:

Our first Harshman Family-Student-Teacher Association (FSTA) will take place on Wednesday, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. Principal Moore will give this year’s State-of-the-School Address during the FSTA meeting as well. Meeting attendees, please enter through door 8.

Be to school on time:

As a reminder any student arriving late to class – including Period 1 – will be marked tardy. First period starts at 9:00 a.m. Students who arrive to school on a late bus will not be marked tardy. Please help your student exhibit the Harshman Way characteristic of MOTIVATION by getting to school on time each day. Starting this Monday, the 18th: Students who accumulate 5 or more tardies in a month will receive After School Detention. 10 or more in a given month is Saturday School.

Principal Meet and Greets!

Principal Moore wants to hear how the school year is going for you and your student! Please join her during our upcoming Principal Meet and Greets! Families whose home language is Spanish are encouraged to come on Tuesday, August 26 from 9:15 - 10:00 a.m. and families whose home language is English are encouraged to come on Wednesday, August 27 from 9:15 - 10:00 a.m.

Fall sports have started! Our after school snack program does not start until August 25th so please send a snack for your student if they are staying for sports. Hello, Harshman Families … We hope your student had a great first week!

Beginning Monday, any student arriving late to class – including Period 1 – will be marked tardy. The only exception will be if a student arrives late to school due to a bus arriving late. Please help your student exhibit the Harshman Way characteristic of MOTIVATION by being to school on time each day.

Sports start next week! Be sure to check out the Harshman calendar for the most up-to-date sports information. Students can sign up for sports through schoology.

Hello, Harshman Families – It was a GREAT first day of school! Thanks for helping your students be well prepared. Here are a few reminders.

Transportation –

• For car rider drop off and pick up: Please enter the car rider line going north off of Oriental St. No student should be dropped off on 10th St and no one should park on 10th Street.  This is a matter of security and must be followed for the safety of our students and staff.
• For bus riders: Please contact IPS transportation at 226 - 4000 or complete the Let’s Talk ticket for bus all concerns.

One World Binder checks begin on Wednesday! We will be doing our first binder check with students on this Wednesday.

IPS Uniform Policy — Families, please be sure to send your student to school following the IPS Universal Dress Code Policy.  If you have concerns about this policy, please complete the Let’s Talk Ticket to share that with the district.

Student Devices – Students did a great job following the cell phone policy!  Students will be bringing home their IPS issued technology this week.  Be sure to sign the Responsible User Agreement and send the form back to school with your student.

Camp Town – All Families: Please complete this online waiver which will allow your student to participate in team building activities and field trips offered by our trusted partner, Camptown, Inc.

Forms! – All back-to-school forms need to be completed and returned to your student’s advisory teacher by Friday, August 8. Did you miss our “Anchors Up!” back-to-school event? Please email Ms. Murphy  (murphyca@myips.org) with your student’s name so she can send home important paperwork that was passed out at our back-to-school event.
