WELCOME BACK! BASALT MIDDLE SCHOOL 2017-2018

Dear Basalt Middle School Community,

Welcome back! We have been working hard to prepare for your wonderful energetic children to be back at school. It is thrilling to watch students’ and families’ expressions and listen to their comments as they enter our exciting new facilities- the new entry, the wider hallways, the purple lockers, the playground, and much more. We look forward to having all of you here to see our new spaces and celebrate with us at Back to School Night on September 19th. As one large community of learners, from students to parents to staff, we look forward to a year of exponential growth and synergy as we honor one another and learn each other’s hopes and dreams for the future of these students. Remember our motto: Work Hard, Be Kind, Achieve. Together we will make this year the best yet!

Below you’ll find important information on all the other news and changes at Basalt Middle School this year.

If you or your child has any questions or concerns about the beginning of the school year, please feel free to contact me at jellsperman@rfschools.com at any time or you can call 384-5901.  Here’s to a fantastic beginning to the new school year!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Ellsperman

Basalt Middle School, Principal

FIRST DAY INFORMATION

If your student doesn’t know where to go for his or her Core 1 class, we will have a representative from every grade directing students in the main foyer before school. Students will receive their full schedules and lockers in that class as well. We will also hold grade level meetings to share policies, procedures and news with all students at BMS. Ask your students what they learned.

NEW & NOTABLE 2017-2018

New Parking & School Visitor Rules

In addition to a new parking lot configuration, we have provided you with new rules for pick-up and drop off in response to parent concerns last year. Please honor the rules in this document and be courteous to your fellow parents! Also included are the new Safe & Secure Visitor Protocols for BMS.

BMS RENOVATIONS UPDATE

Great progress has been made, yet a few projects will continue into the early fall. The two new 7th/8th classrooms will not be completed until late fall. Students will continue to use the bungalows until then. The auditorium will be completed by Sept. 19. Landscaping continues on campus throughout the fall.

In order to increase the width of the hallways, old lockers down the main corridor and the 7th/8th grade hall were replaced with beautiful new purple half-sized lockers. To continue to keep 7th/8th grader students separate from 5th/6th grade students, we will have the older students partner up to share a locker with someone of their choice within their homeroom class.

We are so pleased with the new middle-level designed playground that is ready for our students (and adults) to enjoy! It has been designed to meet the needs of older students and is more advanced than an elementary playground so requires extra awareness of body in space. Students and staff will be exploring together during CREW the best ways to have fun and stay safe. We want them to work together to meet challenges such as moving through the components of the playground without touching the ground. Seventeen inches of “fibar” (engineered wood fiber) provides a safe surface under the playground, however we do want to warn of the risk of injury if students lose track of their focus in the space.

UPCOMING DONATION & FUNDRAISERS

Penny Wars for Hurricane Harvey. We’re kicking the year off with compassion and a Penny Wars fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Harvey. We hope to help out an impacted middle school. Please send all your change in with students between now and Sept. 19. All the details are here: http://bms.rfsd.k12.co.us/important-announcements/1531-kicking-it-off-with-compassion-penny-wars-for-hurricane-harvey.html

Help a Teacher Commute! By now we’ve all either experienced or heard about the delays and challenges in Glenwood Springs as a result of the bridge construction. While most of our families are lucky to not deal with these delays on a daily basis, our teachers do. Many live in Glenwood and are impacted. Others come from as far away as Rifle, New Castle, and Eagle. We are so grateful for their sacrifice and dedication to BMS. Riding the bus is the most efficient way for them to travel through this construction, but it can cost them up to $200 extra per month! If you would like to donate to gas cards or bus passes to show your appreciation, please contact Jennifer Ellsperman at jellsperman@rfschools.com

STEM Fundraiser on Back to School Night. This year in conjunction with the new playground ribbon cutting ceremony, we will hold a BBQ fundraiser out back. We need parent help to organize! Contact Allison Johnson at ajohnson@rfschools.com or (970) 309-5485 to see what needs to be done. This fundraiser supports our Tech, Science, and Makerspace programs.

BMS Magazine Fundraiser. Our annual school fundraiser kicks off Sept. 19. This fundraiser is an important driver of funding for school extras not included in the budget. More details to come!

5th Grade Bulb Fundraiser. 5th graders will be selling bulbs to help with fifth grade expenses such as field trips. Details will come home from your child’s teacher.

Makerspace Donations. We’re ready to receive donations again in our new and expanded Makerspace. For a list of needs, visit: http://bms.rfsd.k12.co.us/students/the-makerspace.html
