Instructional Overview

Provide descriptive information related to the curriculum, instructional programs, and/or existing interventions to support the academic, behavioral, and/or social emotional needs for all students.

Liberty was named as the 2018 FETC STEM Excellence School. We provide innovative approaches to learning that expand learning opportunities for all learners.  Our teachers work collaboratively on designing STEM activities that include the essential elements including problem-based rigorous learning that incorporates school and community belonging.  This allows our teachers to personalize the learning of all students to best fit their academic ability.  Teachers implement PBL Gold Standard elements routinely during instruction.   At Liberty, we are committed to the whole child which is the main focus for effective instruction including academic,  social, and emotional learning.  Teachers utilize various instructional approaches such as PBL, STEM, Blended Learning, Pathways reading/writing instruction, and many more.  Liberty inclusive practices are growing stronger with the implementation of co-teaching between Cross-Cat Case Managers and General Education Classroom Teachers.

We pay special attention to ensure that components such as, process, curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning communities and school growth are at the forefront of all teaching and learning that occurs at Liberty. Our emphasis on inclusive practices has allowed our co-teaching and special education practices to strengthen and grow for the benefit of our students. Teachers provide students with opportunities for problem solving  independent mastery.  Instructional technology is used to engage students in critical thinking, research using approved resources, and communication of their ideas. We provide proactive academic support and intervention to meet the needs of all learners. Our focus on intervention and enrichment, utilizing the RTI model ensures our students receive the highest quality education.

Areas of Strength

Summary statements for domains providing evidence of analysis of trend data over a 3-year period and data triangulation to confirm areas of strength. Provide a clear connection between outcomes and contributing factors.

At Liberty, we have a very low rate of chronic absenteeism.  This can be attributed, in part, to the engaging academic experiences consistently created by teachers for students.

Liberty is fully accredited in all areas studied by the Virginia Department of Education.

We excel in the areas of STEM/PBL and individualized instruction.  Our SOL scores reflect a strong academic environment where students are encouraged to learn and strive to achieve greatness.

Areas for Growth

Summary statements for domains providing evidence of analysis of trend data over a 3-year period and data triangulation to confirm areas of concern. Provide a clear connection between outcomes and contributing factors.

We are looking at the following areas for continued growth:

-Closing gap in reading performance of students with disabilities as identified in SOL tests, with comparison to our overall achievement in English over a 3-year period.

-Increasing scores in  staff perception of “Rules and Expectations” strand.  We are working on presenting on-going PD sessions on topics such as student engagement, behavior expectations, and logical consequences.
