News from CTA, District 1

Political report:  Charter school reform bills (AB1505 and AB1507) - keeping the momentum going through September.  Lobbying members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to keep the bills moving.  Governor Newsom's office is trying to mediate differences between advocates for traditional and charter schools.  CTA is trying to broaden the scope of the impacts that are considered when new charter schools are being considered - which is why we support AB1505 and AB1507.  |  Redrafting of the Schools & Communities First initiative is going to happen - which means a new round of signature gathering.  This initiative will require business property to be reassessed so that businesses pay more property taxes - taxes which will increase the Prop 98 guarantee and bring more money to public schools.
