Course Overview
The 8th Grade Music Appreciation class is designed to introduce students to a wide range of music styles and genres. Over the course of 8 weeks, students will explore the history and evolution of music, analyze iconic pieces, and engage in discussions about the cultural impact of music. We will focus on listening skills, creative projects, and developing a deeper appreciation for music from various time periods and cultures.
Course Goals & Objectives
- Music History: Gain knowledge of important musical movements, composers, and artists.
- Critical Listening: Develop listening skills to identify different genres and elements of music.
- Creative Expression: Apply knowledge of music through creative projects and presentations.
- Cultural Awareness: Understand the role of music in society, both historically and in the modern world.
Grading Criteria
- Participation (50%): Active engagement in class discussions, listening exercises, and activities.
- Assignments (50%): Quizzes, projects, and reflections on music history and genres.
Participation Rubric (Daily Participation – Worth 10 Points Per Day)
- Preparedness (2 points): Bring materials (pencil, Chromebook) and be ready to engage.
- Engagement (2 points): Actively listen, participate in class discussions, and complete activities.
- Respectfulness (2 points): Treat classmates, teacher, and materials with respect.
- Attitude (2 points): Maintain a positive attitude and show interest in learning.
- Punctuality (2 points): Be on time and ready for class.
Total Points per Day: 10 points
Classroom Expectations
- Respect: Show respect for others, materials, and the learning environment.
- Preparedness: Bring necessary materials (Chromebook, pencil, etc.) and be ready to participate.
- Active Participation: Participate in discussions, activities, and assignments.
- Positive Attitude: Maintain a willingness to try new things and learn.
- Punctuality: Arrive to class on time and ready to engage.
Materials & Supplies
Attendance Policy & Makeup Work
- Class Attendance: Attendance is crucial to participation and learning.
- Makeup Work: If a student misses an assignment or activity, it must be completed within one week to receive full credit.
Restroom & Cell Phone Policy
- Restroom Use: Restroom use should occur during passing time before or after class.
- If a student must leave the classroom: They must fill out the sign-out sheet and take a pass.
- Only one student may leave at a time.
- Students are not permitted to leave during a song or when called upon to answer a question.
- Cell Phones and Devices: Cell phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices must be put away during class.
- First offense: The device will be taken, and the student will meet with the teacher after school to discuss appropriate usage.
- Second offense: The device will be sent to the office, and additional consequences may apply.
- In accordance with Nebraska law (LB 140), student cell phone use is restricted in schools.
