Warm hello NCCA,
This is your friendly monthly reminder for the community service requirement for graduation :) November has a lovely air of gratefulness, graciousness and giving, doesn’t it? I certainly hope yours is filled with all these good things. Speaking of good, let’s see what some of your generous classmates are up to this month. Check out these excerpts from their logs:
Paige:
“Each day we did 2 different activities that served the community throughout the city of Chicago. We helped clean up a garden for a local elementary school that served low-income families, we went to working bikes (not-for-profit bike shop which fixes up old cycles to be donated to global communities) and helped fix bikes, and we packed lunches for a local homeless outreach center. I loved being able to travel to a new city and help little by little to make their home a better place. I learned a lot about what obstacles homeless people may have to fight to get through just for a job or to find a place to live. I also learned that treating them like the human beings they are even if you can't give them anything other than a smile, makes a huge impact.”
Eric:
“Assisted with setting up, decorating, serving food and cleaning up for a Thanksgiving Dinner for senior participants at the Garner Senior Center. Some older people do not have access to a lot of food and they get most of it when they go to the senior center. I also learned that a lot of old people do not have family that live near them and they get very lonely. Also, a Super Hero day celebration where participants were encouraged to dress up like Heros and Villians. It was fun talking to seniors about comics. I learned that you are never too old to have fun and dance. For the Color me Calm Reception, I learned a lot about how coloring helps keep the mind sharper. It helps with people with dementia. It relaxes and helps with anxiety and depression. And it is fun.”
Mrs. Ragland, English Teacher:
She is an avid 4-H volunteer. She plans to serve at a Horse Therapy Farm called Corral this month. They are hosting an event called Farm Day on November 16 from 9:30 to 12:00 in Cary, NC. RSVP on the webpage if you would like to join in on the fun (please note, this is not a field trip through our school, but nevertheless an opportunity to serve and socialize). Also, send an email to Mrs. Ragland so she can keep an eye out for you :)
Hoot hoot to them and to you for improving your corner of the world! If you would like to advertise a community service opportunity that you are going to attend and it is happening in NC, send me an email and I’m happy to add it to these monthly reminder messages.
Thanks to those of you who signed up for my field trip to the Food Bank on November 15! I’m looking forward to serving with you!
SENIORS WHO ARE GRADUATING IN JANUARY 2020: Please email me with your completed log by January 1st, ok? The earlier the better, I say! :) In case you need it, here is this year’s template to log your service hours. You just need to email me (in Edgenuity) the link to your log (which should be a google sheet). After I read all of the entries in your log, I will email you back with a response to let you know that you are finished with this requirement.
Please know, I love talking about community service so I am happy to chat with you on the phone or text or provide you with an individual Live Lesson so please reach out anytime!
Happy Fall Y’all!
