Volleyball
Our High School Volleyball teams had their first full week of games, including our very first game in our new gym! Monday brought in an enthusiastic crowd as the JV and Varsity teams underwent their first contest on the new floor. DSST: Cedar showed up ready to roll, as they came back and beat our JV team in 3 sets along with our Varsity team in a very close and exciting 5-set match. Even though both the JV and Varsity suffered gut-wrenching defeats, that did not mean our players didn’t show up. On the JV level, junior Katie Kessler was in all the action, having some amazing sets and clutch kills leading to an all-around back-and-forth battle. On the Varsity end, junior Ashby Deeds came to play as she totaled 7 kills on 10 attempts and 0 errors, along with laying her body on the line and collecting 7 digs!
For their third game, C, JV, and Varsity fought hard against the Wheatridge Farmers, but ultimately, both teams could not stick out a victory. Thursday was the C team's first game. They came out fighting hard and won in 3. First, Sophomore Daphne Baumgartner, Freshman Emorie Zaharris, and Sophomore Hannah Ritz had amazing serves. Second, Sophomore Ali Allums and Freshman Lola Alm also had great swings and saves.

On the JV side, Daphne Baumgartner was in the middle of everything on both the offensive and defensive. On the Varsity side, Sophomore Mei Li Scholl stood out, especially on the offensive side, as she got 3 kills on 4 attempts. The team traveled to Brush on Saturday, and all three teams fought hard against the Beetdiggers but could not secure a win. The C team fought hard but could not secure the win, though Sophomore Bella Rodriguez played a solid libero all game long. Freshman Emma Francavilla shined on the JV side as she led the charge for a comeback that fell just short. Junior Keke Sullivan was doing her best to lead the Varsity team, but Brush unfortunately came out on top. The High School Volleyball program will work hard over the next week, preparing for their away game against St. Mary's on September 5th.

Soccer

The High School Soccer program had its first week of action, and they could not have asked for a better start as they began as the #10th ranked team in the State! On Tuesday, the Varsity team defeated Windsor Charter Academy in a hard-fought 2-1 battle. Sophomore Jonathan (JP) Pratt and Junior Markus Lloyd each scored once as Sophomore Nathan Kamman defended the goal well. The JV team unfortunately lost to Windsor Charter 1-0, but Freshman Sawyer Gray played very well as Goalie. On Thursday, we crushed Rocky Mountain Lutheran 6-0 as Freshman Mo Estacio dominated and recorded his first hat trick of the season. Soccer looks to extend their hot start at home this Friday against STEM.

Golf

The Golf Season is off to a fast and great start! On August 14th, the Golf team won 2nd place at the Lone Tree meet, and Landon Webb led the charge, placing third by shooting a team-best 79. August 17th brought the same success as our team earned 2nd place, with Junior Landon Webb getting third with another great score of 79 and Sophomore Tucker Corazarri tying for 4th with a score of 81. On Wednesday, the JV jumped into their first tournament of the year, and it was a great opportunity to get out there and compete. This Wednesday and Thursday, the Varsity team looks to continue its hot start to the season as they will compete in Monument at King’s Deer Golf Course.

Cross Country

High School Cross Country had their first meet on Friday, and the results were overall pretty positive. The boys earned 5th place, with Junior Mitch Hixson leading the way as he earned 10th place out of a whopping 107! The girls ran well, too, with Juniors Adelina Calvanese and Keira DiPrimo taking charge and starting their seasons off with strong times. The Cross Country team will look to continue their early success this Friday.

Ekko Hopkins Retirement

It was a great pleasure for SVA HS Athletics to retire our first uniform in our young history on August 17. Class of 2023 graduate, Ekko Hopkins, is the very first basketball player to score 1,000 points in her career! Her decorated career included one Honorable Mention All-Conference, one 2nd Team All-Conference, and two 1st Team All-Conference awards. She was selected to the All-State team and led our girls’ basketball program to their very first district championship. She was also the recipient of the Mile High League Female Senior Athlete of the Year for all her great accomplishments, not only in basketball but also in volleyball and soccer. She was named Honorable Mention All-Conference in volleyball and was the star goalie on the 2023 Final Four girls' soccer team!

A SkyView student winning this award is extra special as it is named after Mick McLaughlin, the late father of board member Mark McLaughlin. She is the type of athlete all coaches want to coach, and I am so honored we had the opportunity to recognize her accomplishments!

SVA Theater Presents Radium Girls

Mark your calendars… Radium Girls is coming to the SVA Theater on October 5th, 6th, and 7th!

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage -- until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.

Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.
