What is Code.org’s Facilitator Development Program?

The Code.org Facilitator Development Program is an intensive professional learning program for people who are interested in becoming a leader for teachers bringing computer science to their classrooms. This program is designed to prepare facilitators to provide high quality local professional development on a specific Code.org computer science course. Program participants will engage in a series of in-person and independent training and development, and lead workshops for teachers in their region using Code.org-designed workshop agendas and tools.

What am I committing to by joining Code.org’s Facilitator Development Program?

When participants apply to the program, they must select one curriculum focus area. Program commitments, qualifications, and benefits vary by focus area. Check out the resources below to learn more:

What does a Code.org facilitator do?

  • Join a nationwide community of leaders and facilitators in CS education
  • Participate in in-person, virtual, and independent facilitator development
  • Collaborate with your local Code.org Regional Partner to deliver professional development workshops to teachers on Code.org's courses, with ongoing support from Code.org and the facilitator community
  • Partner with Code.org and our Regional Partners to shape the future of professional learning for thousands of new CS educators across the US and beyond

What happens after the first year of the Facilitator Development Program?

After the first year, Code.org facilitators continue to work with their Regional Partners to support Code.org workshops locally. Additionally, facilitators are invited to participate in ongoing development and Code.org training opportunities.

How much does the Facilitator Development Program cost?

Nothing! The program is free to join. In fact, facilitators are paid by Code.org for engaging in in-person development events. The length and pay for these events vary depending on your curriculum focus area.

Will I be paid to participate in the Facilitator Development Program?

Yes! All facilitators who are accepted to the program will be paid by Code.org for engaging in in-person development events. The length and pay for these events will depend on the curriculum for which someone facilitates. In addition, CS Discoveries and CS Principles facilitators will be compensated for engaging in the Deeper Learning Program, a series of reflections designed to strengthen new facilitators’ understanding of the curriculum and workshop agendas.

How much are facilitators paid to lead workshops?

Facilitators are compensated by Code.org’s Regional Partners for leading workshops. The compensation amount varies by region, and we encourage facilitators and Regional Partners to discuss payment amounts during the interview process.

I’m looking to learn the curriculum as a teacher, is this the right program?

If you are interested in teaching one of our courses, the Code.org Professional Learning Program may be a better fit for you. Whether you’re brand new to computer science or an experienced tech teacher looking for the best way to use the Code.org curriculum, our Professional Learning Program is a great way to get started!

I’m interested in being a computer science facilitator, but I’ve never used the Code.org curriculum. Will I be a good fit for this program?

Great question! We certainly have strong facilitators in our program who joined us without ever having taught a Code.org curriculum. However, they have told us that they needed to dedicate extra hours of preparation to their workshops in order to develop a deep understanding of the curriculum, and to feel adequately prepared to support teachers in their workshops. If you do not have experience teaching the curriculum for the workshops you will lead as a facilitator, please expect to devote significant time (on top of normal workshop preparation time) to learning and internalizing the philosophy and content of the course.

When are applications available?

Applications for the Facilitator Development Program will be available on January 14, 2019.

Want to be notified when applications open? Receive a reminder when applications are available.

How do I apply?

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Check out our program specific commitments.

  1. Set aside 25 - 30 minutes to complete the online application. Note that our application is not optimized for mobile devices; we suggest completing it on a laptop or desktop.

In addition, we recommend that you make sure you’re able to receive emails from facilitators@code.org at the email address you will use for your application. If this address is blocked by your district’s firewall, please contact the appropriate IT representative at your school or district to whitelist this address.

Can I apply for more than one program?

We normally discourage applicants from applying to more than one program, due to the significant time commitments for each program. If you are interested in applying for more than one program, please submit your application and in the additional notes section indicate any other programs you wish to be considered for.

If I am accepted to be a facilitator for one curriculum, can I facilitate for all curricula?

We’re happy to hear your enthusiasm for supporting teachers at all levels! Please note that if you apply to be a facilitator, you will be asked to choose one curriculum for which you will be trained to lead workshops. This means you will only be certified to lead workshops for that particular curriculum, not all Code.org curricula. If you are interested in leading workshops for a different curriculum in a later year, you are welcome to apply to be a facilitator for that program as well.

If I’m already a Code.org facilitator, can I apply to another program?

Yes! If you currently facilitate for Code.org, you can apply for another program.

Can I nominate someone to the program?

Know someone who would be a great Code.org facilitator? Share our website code.org/facilitator and encourage them to apply!

Will Code.org accept international applicants to the Facilitator Development Program?

Like our Professional Learning Programs, the Facilitator Development Program is only open to U.S.-based applicants at this time.

I don’t have a Regional Partner. Can I still apply?

Great question! Anyone in the U.S. is welcome to apply; however, we prioritize applicants in regions where we currently have Regional Partners and where those partners have a need for additional facilitators.

When do I found out if I’m accepted to the program?

You should expect to receive a status update beginning in March 2019. Due to the volume of applications, we are not able to guarantee that you will receive a response to individual requests for status updates.

If you need to change or withdraw your application, or if you have additional questions, please email facilitators@code.org.

I still have questions! Who can I contact?

We’re here to help! Please email facilitators@code.org.
