The Sixth Annual David Foster Wallace Conference on Contemporary Literature and Culture will be held at Illinois State University, June 27-29, 2019. We invite presentations in critical research, pedagogy, and creative writing. Online Proposal Form at DFW.12Writing.com. Critical Papers and Panels should fall within the following categories. We also invite roundtable proposals in these categories – for roundtable discussions, please indicate which particular questions your panelists will address and how you will invite audience participation. - DFW Studies: Research that relates directly to the writing and legacy of David Foster Wallace. We encourage examination of his novels, short fiction, nonfiction, and any other connections related to his work.
- Contemporary Literature: Wallace had extensive interests in both literary and popular writing. We welcome research into any works written since the 1950’s, including exploration of how earlier traditions continue to influence today’s writers.
- Arts and Culture: Wallace frequently examined the disconnections between cultural expectation and personal experience, particularly the potentially dehumanizing influences of technology. We seek papers that explore major shifts in society, particularly as seen in art, social media, and other modes of expression.
Pedagogy Papers and Panels should provide insights for teaching writing and contemporary literature in the undergraduate classroom. We particularly encourage discussions on introducing Wallace’s writing to student audiences. Creative Writing Presentations are welcome in a variety of genres. A complete draft of the proposed reading is required as part of the proposal. Inquiries and Submissions: Please visit DFW.12Writing.com.
