Scope and Content

The collection consists of deeds, mortgages, bonds, fire insurance, and other legal documents pertaining to Smith Thompson and other members of the Thompson/Livingston families.

Historical Note

Smith Thompson was born in Amenia, NY January 17, 1768. He studied at Princeton and practiced law in Troy, and Poughkeepsie. He married Sarah Livingston (1777-1833). Later in 1836 he married Eliza Livingston (1805-1866). He served as the Secretary of the Navy from 1819-1823, and then served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1823-1843. He was a founding Vice-President of the American Bible Society. He died in 1843 and is buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

The Collection was donated to the Dutchess County Historical Society by Helen Wilkinson Reynolds in 1940.
