History has been made at Lincoln High School for Varsity Girls Basketball player Katie Leeth, who broke the school record for most points scored in all four high school years, and is not done yet.
Senior Katie Leeth broke the record for most points scored in all four years by raking up 1358 points. The record was previously 1350 held by the class of 2019 graduate Kalyna Kim. Leeth not only leaves a mark on the school, but she has also left a mark on her coaches and teammates.
When asked about how proud she was, Coach Amy Avila said, “Extremely proud because this is my fourth year coaching Katie, and she is an extremely hard worker in the season and the off-season. She deserves it more than anyone”
Leeth never thought ahead of her LHS Girls' Basketball career and never thought it would be as great as it has turned out to be so far, “I didn’t really think about senior year at all during freshman year” when asked if she thought she would break a record at LHS.
Unlike her, Coach Amy had a different idea for Leeth when she was entering her first year coaching Katie at LHS.
“Yes, 100%, I knew from the first time she came out and played that she would make her mark here at Lincoln High School and that she would be a really special player,” Coach Amy said.
Leeth’s pregame is what gets her ready to dominate on the court, "Before games, I always take a nap and carpool with Taylor [Hodge], Maya [Hodge], and Sophia [Gibson],” Leeth said.
What happens behind the scenes at practice is just as crucial to Leeth. “Just locking in during practice and really getting to know how my teammates play really helps us become better as a team,” she said
She is not just a great player on the court but also a great teammate to her team members. Junior player Maya Hodge said, “Katie is always fun to be around and has big energy and is a leader on our team. On the court, she is a dominant player who is not only a force in the post but also constantly finds her teammates open when being pressured.”
After she graduates this June, she plans to attend California State University, Monterey Bay. She will continue her education there and play Division 2 Women’s basketball under Coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery.
“I am excited, and it feels great to be a part of their program,” Leeth says.
