Pi Rocks

By Marissa Doppe

Note:

This pattern is inspired by Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl from her Knitter's Almanac book.

Yarn:

You can use any leftover fingering weight yarn.  This would be a great and fun use of Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails (52 yards Superwash Merino Wool).  Yardage needed will depend upon the size of the rock.

Gauge:

Gauge isn't important.  You will be knitting-to-fit each unique rock.

Needles:

I used a US4 but you can use whatever needle size you prefer.  Sizes US 1-4 would be best.

Knitting Abbreviations:

Yo: yarn over (increasing 1 stitch)

K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together (decrease 1 stitch)

Pattern:

Cast on 9 stitches with Emily Ocker's circular cast on.

https://www.yarn.com/blog_entries/emily-ockers-circular-cast-on

Rnd 1: (knit 1, yo) repeat to end of row, ending in a yo (18 sts)

Rnd 2: knit

Rnd 3: Repeat Row 1 (36 sts)

Rnds 4-9: Knit

Rnd 10: Repeat Row 1 (64 sts)

Rnds 11-22: Knit *or knit as many rows as needed for your rock.  At some point in these rows, try this on your rock for fit.  You want to stretch it around and stop knitting once you have knit enough to almost cover your rock when stretched over.

*This would also be a great time to weave in your cast-on tail

Decreasing rows:

Rnd 1: (Knit 1, K2tog) repeat to end of the row

Rnd 2: Knit 1 round

Rnd 3: K2tog to end of row

Finishing:  Fit your rock by pulling your pi tautly over.  You want a tight fit to show off the lace.  Pull yarn through remaining stitches and tighten, weaving in ends.
