COPPA Form for Verifiable Parental Consent (COPPA is the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act)

Dear Parents,

In order for Homer School District 33C to provide your student with the most effective web-based tools and apps for learning, we need to abide by federal regulations that require a parental permission as outlined below. Homer School District 33C utilizes several computer software apps and web based services operated not by Homer School District 33C, but by third parties. These include Google Apps for Education and similar educational programs.

Each student will be given an email address and password. As a protection, students will only be able to send and receive emails to/from people with the same email extension, i.e. other staff and students with the same email addresses.

The email address will also enable students to take full advantage of Google Apps for Education. Students can log into Google Chrome from any computer at home to have full access to their work stored in Google Drive. Please ask your student to share their email address and password so you can review their account on a regular basis.

In order for our students to use these programs and services, certain basic personal identifying information--generally the student’s name, username and email address must be provided to the web site operator. Again, it is important to note that students in grades K-8 can only email Homer School District 33C staff members from their school accounts and cannot receive email from ANY outside email addresses. There is no danger that any outside individuals or companies will be able to communicate with children in these grades. In many cases, access to these websites and resources is provided through a teacher account and is monitored by the teacher using the resource.

Under the federal COPPA law, these websites must notify parents and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. However, the law permits schools such as Homer School District 33C to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent to be given directly to each website provider. This form constitutes your consent for Homer School District 33C Schools to provide limited personal identifying information for your child consisting of first name, last name, email address, and username to Google Apps for Education and the operators of any additional web-based educational programs and services which Homer School District 33C may deem necessary during the upcoming academic year.

This document is being provided through the online registration process, and your electronic signature and the end of the registration process is considered legal and binding.
