Unit: Rites of Passage unit

Essential Question: What are some milestones on the path to growing up?

This week’s readings and activities:

  • “The Setting Sun and the Rolling World” by Charles Mungoshi

Math

Zach Allen

8th Grade Math: This week we began our unit on functions. Students learned how functions represent relationships between different values and how to identify them in different contexts, such as maps, tables, and graphs.

Math 1: This week, we are learning about arithmetic and geometric sequences as we complete our unit on exponential functions.  

Science

The students are learning about molecular biology and the nutrients found in food.

Social Studies

We are ending Unit 3: Revolution and the New Nation 1763--1800 with a project.

Unit 3 Project:

  • Students picked from four landmark Supreme Court Cases concerning protection of individual rights outlined in the Bill of Rights.

  • Students will do structured research on their chosen court case then show their learning in either a slide show, poster or paper.

  • We will be spending time at the end of this week and next week to complete projects during class.

  • This an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to organize and manage their time to complete the project within the assigned time.

Please ask your student about their court case and how their project is developing. I can’t wait to see everyone’s finished projects!

Deadline for the project is Friday March 1st.

Next week begins Unit 4:  Expansion and Reform (1800-1860).

1B students will continue the Senor Wooly song Puedo ir al bano. The language acquired during these activities will lead to reading the graphic novel La lucha de la limonada.

The students are learning how to check vital signs and how to investigate illnesses.

This week students continued exploring how to operate their microbits and learned about debugging and the etymology of the term.  

Art

Our works of clay have all gone to the kiln now and while we await their return they have begun working towards making a self portrait. This is an annual project that we complete in every grade and it begins with practicing a photorealism technique where we create a grid to look more closely at the image. Below are a few of the portraits that students will use to draw themselves.
