DEARLY beloved brothers and sisters, in various places the Scripture impels us to acknowledge and confess our many sins and wickedness; and that we should not disguise nor hide them from the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; with the result that we may obtain forgiveness of them, by His infinite goodness and mercy. And although at all times we ought to humbly acknowledge our sins before God; yet we ought especially to do so when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at His hands, to express His most worthy praise, to hear His most holy Word, and to ask those things which are indispensable and necessary, for the body as well as the soul. For this reason  I urge and entreat you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, to the throne of the heavenly grace, saying:

(Proverbs 28.13; James 5.15-16; Psalm 95.2; 1 Timothy 4.13; Hebrews 4.16)

A General Confession

To be said by the whole congregation, with the Minister, all kneeling.

Kneel

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the plans and desires of our own hearts. We committed offense against Your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; According to Your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; That from here onward we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Your holy Name. Amen.

(Psalm 119.176; Isaiah 53.6; 65.2; Luke 18.13; Ephesians 4.24)

The Declaration of Absolution, or Remission of Sins

To be pronounced by the Priest alone, or by the Bishop if he is present, standing; the people still kneeling.

But note, That the Presbyter, at his discretion, may use, instead of what follows, the Declaration of Absolution from the Order for the Holy Communion. If the Minister be not a Presbyter, he shall remain kneeling, and read the Prayer for the Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity.

MERCIFUL Lord we entreat You to grant to Your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve You with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Priest: ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who does not desire the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, has given power, and commandment to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins. He pardons and absolves all those who truly repent, and sincerely believe his holy Gospel.

    Wherefore let us implore Him to grant us true repentance, and His Holy Spirit, that those things may please Him which we do at this present time; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to His eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(Ezekiel 33.11; Mark 1.15; Matthew 16.19; Acts 20.32; Romans 6.22)

People: Amen

Then the Minister shall kneel, and say the Lord’s Prayer; the people still kneeling, and repeating it with him, both here, and wheresoever else it is used in Divine Service.

OUR FATHER, Who is in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

(Matthew 6.9-13)

Then, still kneeling, he shall say, or sing,

Priest: O Lord, open our lips.

Answer: And our mouth shall show forth Your praise.

Priest: O God, be hasty to save us.

Answer:O Lord, make haste to help us.

(Psalm 51.1; 38.22; 70.1)

Here, all standing up, the Minister shall say, or sing,

Priest: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

Answer: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Priest: Praise the Lord.

Answer: The Lord’s Name be praised.

(Psalm 90.2; Ephesians 3.21; Revelation 4.8)

Come Let Us Sing (Venite, exultemus Domino) Psalm 95

Oh come, let us sing to the LORD;

        let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

        let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

For the LORD is a great God,

        and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth;

        the heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,

        and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

        let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

For he is our God,

        and we are the people of his pasture,

        and the sheep of his hand.

Today, if you hear his voice,

        do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

        as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,

when your fathers put me to the test

        and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.

For forty years I loathed that generation

        and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,

        and they have not known my ways.”

Therefore I swore in my wrath,

        “They shall not enter my rest.”

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, *and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, *world without end. Amen.

(Psalm 90.2; Ephesians 3.21; Revelation 4.8)

(Venite,exultemus Domino)

    是超越万神的大君王。

地的深处在他手中;

    山的高峰也属他。

海洋属他,是他造的;

    旱地也是他手造成的。

    在造我们的耶和华面前跪拜。

因为他是我们的 神;

    我们是他草场的百姓,是他手中的羊。

    “他们断不可进入我的安息!”

愿荣耀归于父,子,圣灵;

You, O God, We Praise (Te Deum Laudamus)

WE praise You, O God; we acknowledge You to be the Lord.

All the earth worships You, the Father everlasting.

To You all Angels cry aloud; the Heavens, and all the Powers therein;

To You Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry,

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts;

Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of Your glory.

The glorious company of the Apostles praise You.

The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise You.

The noble army of Martyrs praise You.

The holy Church throughout all the world acknowledges You;

The Father: of an infinite Majesty;

Your adorable, true, and only Son;

Also the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

YOU are the King of Glory, O Christ.

You are the everlasting Son of the Father.

When You took upon Yourself to deliver man,

You did humble Yourself to be born of a Virgin.

When You had overcome the sharpness of death,

You did open the kingdom of Heaven to all believers.

You sit at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father.

We believe that You shall come to be our Judge.

We therefore pray You, help Your servants,

Whom You have redeemed with Your precious blood.

Make them to be numbered with Your Saints,

In glory everlasting.

O LORD, save Your people, and bless Your heritage.

Govern them, and lift them up forever.

Day by day we magnify You;

And we worship Your Name, ever world without end.

Guarantee, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.

O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.

O Lord, let Your mercy be upon us, as our trust is in You.

O Lord, in You have I trusted; let me never be confounded.

(Isaiah 6.2-3; Revelation 4.4-11; John 1.14; 5.20; 14.26; Psalm 24.10, 28; 145.2; 123.3; 33.22; 31.1; James 2.1)

Blessed be the Lord (Benedictus) St. Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,

        for he has visited and redeemed his people

 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us

        in the house of his servant David,

as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

        that we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us; to show the mercy promised to our fathers

        and to remember his holy covenant,

 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

        that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him without fear,

        in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;

        for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

 to give knowledge of salvation to his people

        in the forgiveness of their sins,

because of the tender mercy of our God,

        whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

         to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son *and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, *world without end. Amen.

(Benedictus)

孩子啊,你要称为至高者的先知;

认识救恩;

愿荣耀归于父,子,圣灵;

Be Joyful in the Lord (Jubilate Deo) Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Serve the Lord with gladness!

        Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!

        It is he who made us, and we are his;

        we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

        and his courts with praise!

        Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;

        his steadfast love endures forever,

        and his faithfulness to all generations.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son *and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, *world without end. Amen.

    我们是他造的,也是属他的;

    我们是他的民,是他草场的羊。

    当赞美进入他的院。

    当感谢他,称颂他的名!

因为耶和华本为善;

    他的慈爱存到永远,

    他的信实直到万代。

Then the Apostle’s Creed shall be said by the minister and the people together, all standing. Any church may say ‘He went to the place of departed spirits’ instead of ‘He descended into hell’, which is considered to have the same meaning in the Creed.

The Athanasian Creed

Quicunque vult

WHOSOEVER will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic Faith. Which Faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.

And the catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal; And yet they are not three eternals, but one Eternal. As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one Uncreated and one Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty; And yet they are not three almighties, but one Almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God; And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord; And yet not three Lords, but one Lord. For as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord; So are we forbidden by the catholic Faith to say there are three Gods, or three Lords. The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

And in this Trinity none is before or after other; none is greater or less than another; But the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal. So that in all things, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. He therefore that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity.

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the true Faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the Substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the Substance of his Mother, born in the world; Perfect God, and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting; Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead; and inferior to the Father, as touching his Manhood. Who although he is God and Man, yet he is not two, but one Christ; One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of the Manhood unto God;

One altogether, not by confusion of Substance, but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and Man is one Christ. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, and rose again the third day from the dead; He ascended into heaven; he sits on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire.

This is the catholic Faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for The Ruler, and all in Civil Authority

O LORD, our heavenly Father, the high and mighty Ruler of the universe, who from your throne beholds all the dwellers upon earth; we most earnestly entreat you, with your favor to behold and bless your servant (The President, King, Prime Minister, Ruler, etc.), and all others in authority; and so replenish them with the grace of your Holy Spirit, that they may always incline to your will, and walk in your way. Endue them plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant them to live long in health and prosperity; and finally, after this life, to attain everlasting joy and felicity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. O LORD our Governor, whose glory is in all the world: We commend this nation to Your merciful care, that being guided by Your Providence, we may dwell secure in Your peace. Grant to (President, King, Prime Minister, Ruler, etc.), and to all in Authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do Your will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness; and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in Your fear; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. O GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly pray to You for all sorts and conditions of men; that You would be pleased to make Your ways known unto them, Your saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for Your holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by Your good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to Your fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or life situation; [*especially those for whom our prayers are desired; insert here any supplications for those in need of prayer for any reason.] that it may please You to comfort and relieve them, according to their many needs; giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy result out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we, Your unworthy servants, do give You most humble and hearty thanks for all Your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men; [*Insert here any prayers of thanksgiving, particularly to those who desire now to offer up their praises and thanksgivings for God’s great mercies granted unto them.] We bless You for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for Your inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we humbly pray to You, give us that due sense of all Your mercies, that our hearts may be sincerely thankful; and that we show forth Your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to Your service, and by walking before You in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

(2 Corinthians 1.3; Isaiah 63.7; Revelation 4.11; Romans 12.1)

Note that the General Thanksgiving may be said by the Congregation with the Minister.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom.

ALMIGHTY God, who has given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto You; and promises that when two or three are gathered together in Your Name You will grant their requests; Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Your servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of Your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

(John 14.13-14. From the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom ca. late 300’s A.D.)
