Summer is almost here!

And summer is a great time to take a break, reflect on your accomplishments this past year, and make a plan for the upcoming year. Do you want to get your first job? Maybe you want to explore a new career pathway. Have you researched what kind of education or training you might need to be successful after high school? Do you want to learn more about financial aid?

There are opportunities for all of this, and more, this summer! Check out June’s Newsletter, and make some time to bring your plans to life this summer. Enjoy the sun, and stay safe!

GEAR UP FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

  • A Family Guide: Supporting Your Child After High School. The focus of this resource is to normalize the “first-year experience,” to counteract the “imposter syndrome.”  The strategies help set realistic expectations and problem-solving behaviors students need to succeed in college. (Available in Arabic, Chuukese, Marshallese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.)
  • Financial Aid 101: How to Fund Education After High School. This 6-page trifold is for students and families. It provides an overview of financial aid, what Washington State aid looks like, and includes myths/facts, and how to apply. (Available in Arabic, Chuukese, English, Marshallese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.)
  • Financial Aid 201: How to Fund Education After High School. This 6-page trifold is for students and families. It provides an overview of the next steps after financial aid completion, including navigating verification and understanding award letters. (Available in Arabic, Chuukese, English, Marshallese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.)
  • Handout: Make Your College Plans a Reality. There are important steps that need to be completed over the summer for you to be able to enroll in the fall. The tasks listed are common to most colleges. (Available in Arabic, Chuukese, Marshallese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.)

This workbook walks students through how to plan and prepare for college. It is outlined by grade and subject area and available in English, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese

FINANCIAL AID - WASHINGTON COLLEGE GRANT

  • The Washington College Grant (WCG) is a state financial aid program that provides more aid to more students than ever before. The WCG handout is available in five languages.
  • WCG Informational Videos WSAC worked with the North Central Educational Service District (NCESD) to develop videos to increase students’ awareness of state financial aid and postsecondary education opportunities. These videos are free for counselors and advocates to share with students and families. Available in multiple languages: English | Spanish | Chinese | Russian | Somali | Tagalog | Vietnamese

  • CHS Alumni Support Webpage A part of the CCRC webpage, this page is here to provide post high-school planning & support for CHS Alumni. Check it out before you graduate!
  • Make Your College Plans a Reality There are important steps that need to be completed over the summer for you to be able to enroll in the fall. The tasks listed are common to most colleges. Available in multiple languages.
  • Graduate Handbook: Next Steps for First Year Students This "Summer Melt" student guide contains information on critical next steps for college. It also covers resources and support, registration, tips for commuters, common stages in the first year, strategies for students planning to transfer, and financial aid information.
  • A Family Guide: Supporting Your Child After High School The content aims to ease the initial transition to college by facilitating an on-going dialogue between a student and their family who may lack knowledge about college. It provides strategies to coach their student.   • Resources Scenarios: These are common scenarios that students encounter during their first year in college. Using your college or university’s website and the handout: Resources & Support Services to Navigate Your Way, identify what resource(s) can help in each scenario on your future campus.

Here Comes the “Better FAFSA”!

This is the year that significant changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) passed into law in 2020 go into effect, the biggest since 1997! The number one thing you should know? The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) has announced that the release of the new FAFSA, Branded as the "Better FAFSA," will be delayed until December 2023 rather than its traditional October 1 opening date. A firm release date will be announced later this year.

The Better FAFSA promises to:

  • Decrease application times
  • Increase the number of applicants and the proportion of complete. applications.
  • Increase the number of students receiving Pell Grants.
  • Increase available time that students, parents, school counselors, and advisors can spend on other important aspects of postsecondary planning and enrollment.

Here is NCAN's (National College Attainment Network) top 10 list of changes coming to the FAFSA’s questions and processes that also warrant our attention and planning discussions.

LOCAL SPSCC Foundation Scholarships Attending South Puget Sound Community College in the Fall? Their Fall 2023 scholarships are open! Awards range from $500 - $3,000. Due June 30, 2023

LOCAL Driver’s Ed Scholarship Olympic Driving School offers scholarships for driver education. Applicants must be enrolled in high school (or home-schooled equivalent) as full-time students for the present or upcoming school year. Due October 1, 2023

LOCAL The Thurston County Dispute Resolution Center is seeking a student Board Member. It is a great opportunity for a student to learn about dispute resolution skills, take advantage of training opportunities, and gain the leadership experience of serving on a non-profit board. Women of Distinction Smith College’s overnight, fully funded fly-in program. Intended for high school seniors, this annual event will highlight opportunities offered by Smith College for African American, Asian American, Latin American, Native American, and first generation college students. Housing, meals, and transportation to and from campus are included.

We are offering two rounds of Women of Distinction:

October 13 - 14: Application deadline is June 30

November 10 - 11: Application deadline is September 15

Students will indicate on their application which program they are applying to.

(Both dates provide the same offerings.)

Participants will have the chance to connect with current Smith students, faculty, and other community members. Additional programming will include a series of panels and workshops on academics and student life.

Windows on Williams (WOW) application is now available for your rising seniors. The WOW fly-in program provides about 150 high-achieving seniors an all-expenses-paid opportunity to visit campus and experience the Williams community. WOW is a selective program open to rising seniors in the U.S. and Puerto Rico; preference is given to high-achieving students who couldn't otherwise afford to visit Williams.

WOW participants stay in dorms with current students, attend classes, meet with professors, and learn about our admission process and our extraordinary financial aid program. Please apply using this link by either of our two deadlines: July 1 or August 1, and feel free to contact them with any questions

Taste of Carlton (TOC) Carleton College Visit Every fall, Carleton College sponsors a fly-in program for underrepresented senior students called Taste of Carleton (TOC). Participants in this all-expenses-paid program will be able to visit campus from Thursday, October 8 to Saturday, October 10. This is a great way for students to get a real feel for what Carleton is like, both on an academic and social level.

Free Summer Camp: Neuroscience for Neurodiverse Learners (NNL) Summer Program. DO-IT Center and Center for Neurotechnology at UW are recruiting high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors who are citizens and permanent residents of the United States and its possessions who identify as neurodiverse learners. Free 10-day hybrid summer camp. Aug. 7-18.

Graduates from the Construction Bootcamp complete 128 hours of technical skills and professional development training. Graduates earn their OSHA-10 certification, flagger certification, and forklift operator certification. Each cohort concludes with a hiring event on graduation day to help connect the graduates with potential employment opportunities.

Bootcamp Dates: (Cohort 1) July 10 - Aug 4 (Cohort 2) Aug 14 - Sept 8

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be able to lift 50 lbs. All experience levels are welcome to apply. Training for each cohort will take place at the Olympia Armory, Monday – Friday, from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

Dear Future Women of STEM: Letters of Advice from Women in STEM This study provides the results of 89 women in STEM who wrote letters to younger women in STEM about their experiences. The themes highlight women’s unique challenges in STEM and ideas to practically address those challenges and better support women seeking STEM majors and careers.

Hansen Elementary School Carnival - Are you interested in earning Community Service Volunteer hours for your college applications? Hansen Elementary is hosting a Carnival for their students and needs some help. They are looking for dependable individuals who can help with setting up game tables, running game booths/passing out prizes, and cleaning up.

The event will be held on June 10th, from 4:00-730pm. Setting up time starts at 230pm-4pm. Cleanup will be from 7:30-8:30pm.
