THE NEVER-ENDING BATTLE FOR THE PAKISTAN NARRATIVE

Najmuddin Shaikh, Francis Robinson, Hina Rabbani Khar, Pervez Hoodbhoy

Moderator.  Syed Khawar Mehdi

Identity, history, ideology, geography, culture, foreign policy, etc influence national narratives. Pakistan has been in search of one since independence and its contested nature is reflected in the long delay in passing the Constitution, and the fact that the first two Constitutions were passed without unanimous consensus.  Hopefully the new national narrative will be more pragmatic than ideological.

KARACHI’S URBAN PLANNING, PUBLIC SPACES, AND GARBAGE MANAGEMENT

Arif Hasan, Marvi Mazhar, Saeed Ghani, Severine Minot, Farhan Anwar, Ahmed Shah. Moderator: Syed Khawar Mehdi

Sindh’s largest city, Karachi, with a population of 26-30 million accounts for more than a fifth of Pakistan’s urban population. There has been a reduction in violent crime. However, fragmented governance between provincial and municipal levels, land contestation among government entities, and weak institutional capacity have made it difficult to manage the city’s development. Social segregation of disregarded parts of its population is a major challenge, as are public spaces and waste management. Watch now

WOMEN IN PAKISTANI TV DRAMAS & FILMS

Bee Gul, Haseena Moeen, Angeline Malik, Raana Shaikh, Reema Abbasi

Moderator/curator. Tasneem Ahmar

In many TV dramas, women are not depicted as human beings wishing to reach their full potential but as accessories to men. They are told that the "honour" of the family lies in their hands. There is excessive focus on glamour and 'falling in love’ instead of on realistic depictions of working women and the issues they face.  Domestic violence is depicted as normal and even rapists are shown as heroes.  Viewers are thus being brainwashed: no surprise then that too many women are being denied the rights to education and training, to choosing a life partner, and access public spaces. THE CHANGING FACE OF MUSLIMS IN URDU AND HINDI CINEMA AND ITS IMPACT ON POLITICS AND SOCIETY

Bushra Ansari, Khusro Mumtaz, Sultan Arshad, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid Moderator: Javed Jabbar

The earliest “Muslim Socials” were made in the 1930s (Pukar (1939) on Emperor Jahangir being the first notable one).  Bombay became the hub, employing numerous Muslims in every capacity.  Films on the Mughals included Humayun (1945) Shahjehan (1946), Taj Mahal (1963), Jahan Ara (1964), Mughal-e-Azam (1960).  Another theme centered on nawabi culture, highlighting the sophistication of language, literature, music, and lifestyle (Mirza Ghalib (1954), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Mere Mehboob (1963), Pakeezah (1972)).  Musical romances include Laila Majnu (1976). Thereafter films also depicted fading nawabi culture (Shatranj ke Khiladi (1977), Bahu Begum (1967), Umrao Jaan (1981). Themes then shifted to middle-class North Indian Muslims, and from mainstream Bollywood to parallel cinema (Dastak (1970), Garm Hava (1973), Bazaar (1982), and Nikaah (1982), Anjuman (1986), Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), Naseem (1995)). The genre resurfaced in Mammo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996), Fiza (2000), Zubeidaa (2001). Muslim high culture was thus popularized amongst  the Indian masses who sang / quoted songs and dialog in Urdu. Contemporary films such as Do Rasste, Amar Akbar Anthony, Zanjeer as well as period dramas such as Kranti showed Muslim characters positively. Islamic symbolism permeated films such as Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Coolie.. These films, songs and dialogue are some of the famous in Indian cinema, contributing to communal harmony.  Concomitant with this mass cultural consumption, Indian Muslims rose to become presidents, Supreme Court justices, federal ministers, air chief marshals, etc. We will showcase the iconic songs and scenes and talk about the forces behind them: politics and people.

1.20-1:50 pm FROM THEORY TO ACTION: HOW TO BUILD RADICALLY HUMAN AND RESILIENT ORGANISATIONS DRIVING PROGRESS IN PAKISTAN AND BEYOND

Vladimira Mesko Briestenska, Nadeem Shaikh. Moderator: Asma Khan

From globalisation, environmental crisis to machine learning and automation, society is experiencing systemic challenges and changes. Yet, organizational  bureaucracy and hierarchy remains unchanged, and is holding us back.  Organisations aren’t machines to be controlled but interconnected, dynamic, and complex systems. The ability to adapt, invent, and experiment has become necessary. People should be seen as a collective of change-agents with a joint purpose and ambition, and not as human resources. How can Pakistan become one of the pioneers in this evolution? Lessons from London to Melbourne.
