Instruction 

Homework

The Board shall support the  meaningful assignment of homework for the students  attending its schools. Homework shall play a valuable role in providing the essential practice in  needed skills and promote opportunity for students to develop independence and resourcefulness. .  It shall stimulate the student to  develop self-direction and offer practice in  budgeting time and in using knowledge for some practical purpose.

Instruction 

Homework

The objectives of the class, the age of the group and the individual abilities of the students shall  determine the length and form of assignments. Time required for completion of homework shall  take into consideration the student’s need for free and rest times and out of school activities.  

Homework assignments shall have meaning and purpose, shall be within the student's ability to  work independently and should aid in the extension of activities which increase interest and bring  about progress from year to year. Assignment directions shall be clearly and fully made.  Correction and return of work shall be effected in a timely manner so as to provide students with  meaningful feedback.  

Homework shall not be used as a punishment for infractions of class rules or as busywork.

The following guide for homework is recommended. Independent reading is expected  in addition to this homework.

Grades 1 and 2 20 minutes daily

Grade 3 30 minutes daily

Grade 4 45 minutes daily

Grade 5-6 one hour daily

Grades 7-8 1½ to 2 hours daily

Grades 9-12 2 to 3 hours daily

Assignments for which students have no readiness or conceptual background shall be avoided;  difficult or new work shall be reserved for the classroom with sufficient time allotted for  explanation and reinforcement.
