Read Aloud: Refugee Read Aloud- 3/30, Josef

Reader’s Response: Character Traits Organizer

Directions: Pick one of the main characters from Refugee (Josef, Isabel or Mahmoud) and fill in the graphic organizer to show how well you know the character. Think about the events that have shaped their stories and how they have handled those events.

  1. Students will be forced to make a copy. Students should name their copy full name/date i.e: Lauren Wilson/Monday

  1. Watch Brainpop Jr. video on letter writing. (4 minutes long) The login is     username: sanford 4 password: sanford 4
  2. For another example letter click here.
  3. Try writing a letter to your friend.   You can do this in a google doc and share it with me at scoleman@vanalstyneisd.org, or you can write it on notebook paper, take a picture of your letter, and email it to me at the link above.  Please email this to me today so I can check it over.
  1. Have fun with this!  Ask questions and tell them what you have been up to.  What has been your favorite part of being at home the last two weeks?  What is something funny that has happened to you.  I can’t wait to read them!

We are switching it up for April Fools’ Day.  Click on the link here to go to your writing assignment for today.  Be sure you use your creative writing skills to tell me the rest of the story from the prompt you are given. :)  Work on this for 15-20 minutes and turn in to me what you have written.  Don’t forget paragraph indents, capitalization, and punctuation!  I have also allowed time tomorrow to continue working on any writing needed so students can continue their story tomorrow if they need that time.

Directions: Now that we are towards the end of Refugee, you’ve seen some of the main characters undergo changes throughout the book Pick one of the main characters (Josef, Isabel or Mahmoud) and fill in the graphic organizer to show how they changed throughout the book.

Use this day to finish up any writing that you need to from this week.  

If students are finished and want to continue letter writing, you may do the following but it is an optional assignment and does not have to be completed:

Write a letter to your teacher telling her/him how things are going now that we are learning from home, and tell her/him what you think about us doing virtual learning.  You can write this letter to any teacher that you want.  Don’t forget to share it with me if you use a google doc, or take a picture and email it to me.

Notes:

Writing:  Instead of cursive today, I would love to see students get on typetastic.com.  It is a free website and teaches them the basics of keyboarding through games.  (My kids love it!)  Since we are doing so much online I thought this would be extremely helpful for students.  This is not required, it is only extra if you would like to try it.  The website is free to use.
