Happy March! :)

New word work lists went home on Monday. Next quiz is scheduled for Friday, March 13th.

Let’s all wear green or Greenbrier spirit wear on Wednesdays in March!

Monday

Today we attended the 4th and 5th grade music performance. What a great way to start off the week with such great music! Afterwards, we changed seats and created March mascots for our teams. We had fun participating in a Math Mindset lesson all about animal tongues, brain, horns, teeth, and tails. We analyzed a graph and then used data to create another. During word work, we learned about ar, ear, ore, or, and er words. We chose five of these pattern words and five high frequency words to build our next list. We reviewed chapter 13 on data and graphing during math time. In writer’s workshop, we met with our partner to sort our animal notecards into categories. Can’t wait to start writing tomorrow! :)

Tuesday

This morning after art class we watched a Mystery Doug of the week. It was called “Why do we have tears when we cry?”. In social studies, we reviewed the roles of local government jobs. We read letters that were sent to city hall and wrote a response from the best office to deal with the problem. During readers’ workshop, we kicked off our Schoolwide fiction unit.Today was interactive read aloud #1. We got a sneak peek at all the books in this unit and we discussed the many types of fiction. (historical fiction, mysteries, fairy tales, realistic fiction, fantasy, adventure, fables, etc.) During math, we took a quiz over chapter 13 on data and graphing. In writers’ workshop, we began drafting our animal books. We’ve got some really great facts to share about the animals we researched!

Wednesday

Today after gym and music we wrote thank you letters to Officer Ovington to thank her for visiting our class last week. During reader’s workshop, we reviewed fictional story elements: characters, setting, problem, and resolution. We listened to our interactive read aloud, Mirette on the High Wire, and identified the story elements in our readers’ notebooks. During math,Mrs.Duffer explained what IAR testing will be like. As a class, we solved some practice problems together and got acquainted with the tools on the IAR math tests. We worked with a partner to solve Greg Tang’s Wordy Wednesday problems. During writing, partners continued writing their nonfiction animal books.

Thursday

This morning in social studies we learned about state and federal governments. We also did a Venn diagram to compare the responsibilities of both and watched a BrainPop video about the 3 branches of government. During word work, we did “look, say, cover, write, check” with our ten words. In readers’ workshop, we learned about literary and cultural language by reading Anansi the Spider folktales from Africa. We had fun exploring more Anansi tales on Epic as we hunted fort the two types of languages. During math we practiced some IAR questions all together. We kicked off chapter 14 on fractions with a refresher slideshow before taking the pretest. During writers’ workshop, partners continued drafting their animal books, made a table of contents, and drew illustrations to include in the final copy.

Friday

Happy Friday! Today in the LMC we worked on our brain builder projects. We used kid friendly search engines to research and take notes on our topics. We also learned how to cite our sources. During reading, we discussed the elements of folktales and the reasons they’re written in different cultures. We listened to another Anansi tale from the African culture and then explored other folktales on Epic. We jotted down the tales we read, what cultures they came from, and the reasons we thought they were written. We practiced our word work words on slates.

During math we corrected our DMP, did a few IAR practice problems together, and played a fraction game called “Roll,Slide,Cover”. Then,we tried our Mr. Anker’s math website to solve all kinds of fraction problems. We ended the day with some well earned Friday Fun! :)
