Introducing Our New Captain for the 2024/25 Season: A Vision for Growth, Unity, and Success

We are excited to announce our new captain for Talkin Tarn Amateur Rowing Club for the 2024/25 season - Dudley Smith

A familiar face on the water, our new leader brings with them a strong sporting background and a passion for both rowing and club culture. Having come to rowing later in life after many successful years playing rugby, their dedication and energy have already made a huge impact at the club, and their vision for the future is set to take us even further.

A Focus on Club Cohesion and Development

Our new captain’s primary goal is to foster a spirit of unity and cooperation within the club. Dudley understands that rowing is as much about teamwork on the water as it is about camaraderie off it. In their own words:

"This is your club. To make Talkin Tarn Rowing Club truly thrive, it’s vital that we all work together. A well-functioning club requires input from everyone, from our most experienced rowers to those just starting out."

Under this new leadership, we will be focusing on improving cohesion across all levels. Whether it’s competing in regattas, training hard on cold weekend mornings, or simply enjoying time together as a club, our captain wants to make sure everyone feels a part of this community. The aim is clear: to ensure Talkin Tarn remains competitive, inclusive, and above all, enjoyable for every member.

Looking to the Future

As we embark on this new season, our captain encourages all members to get involved, whether it’s by attending training, supporting events, or even helping with the running of the club. "We have such a talented and diverse group of rowers here, and everyone has something to contribute".

New Roles to Support Growth and Success

We’re thrilled to see so many of our members stepping up to take on key roles to help push the club forward. This level of commitment is exactly what makes Talkin Tarn special and will be critical in making the captain’s vision a reality.

In line with this vision, there are developments to look forward to, particularly around our training structure. New training plans are in the progress, designed to cater to all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just starting out, we hope that these plans will help  to build strength, endurance, and technical skill, with a balanced approach to fitness both on and off the water. Our captain is particularly keen to introduce more structured sessions that ensure everyone can make the most of their time on and off the water.

To further support this initiative,Dudley has proposed the introduction of a Coaching Coordinator. This role will oversee the development and delivery of training programs across the club, ensuring consistency and quality in our coaching. The Coaching Coordinator will work closely with rowers and volunteer coaches to align sessions with the club’s goals, whether that’s preparing for regattas, improving technique, or simply enjoying a good workout. The aim is to create a more structured and supportive environment where every member can grow and succeed.

Sally Smith, although new to our club, has taken on the crucial role of Learn to Row Coordinator. With Sally at the helm, we are confident that our newcomers will receive a warm welcome,  excellent guidance and support, ensuring a smooth transition from beginners to full members of our rowing family.

Additionally, Kevin Dixon has agreed to take up the role of Sunday League Coordinator. Kevin, one of our hard working boatmen, will bring a fresh energy to help us to get the most out of our Sunday league activities. He will work with Sally, as well as our recreational rowers, to provide a bridge for beginners to the start of competitive rowing.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead, filled with hard work, great achievements, and plenty of fun along the way. Here’s to a fantastic 2024/25 season under our new captain's leadership, and to all the wonderful members stepping up to make this club the best it can be!
