Note to all attendees - Some break out sessions are scheduled simultaneously. We understand this makes it difficult to pick between the fabulous topics and artists but it’s okay to come and go quietly from one to the other. You do NOT have to sign up for any sessions ahead of time. There is enough seating at each indoor venue but we suggest you bring your own chair for outdoor demos if you want to sit. Unlike workshops that you may take, you are not guaranteed “front row seating”

at the outdoor demos due to the number of attendees. Most attendees wander from artist to artist when viewing the outdoor painting sessions of multiple artists, so plan to wear comfortable shoes.

Five Points of View  It has been said that it’s not what you paint but how you paint it. And to see that idea in action, join us for a unique demonstration with five accomplished artists interpreting the exact same subject while putting their unique spin on it. How many ways are there to tackle a painting? At least five. Each artist will talk about what they are thinking and doing throughout the demo. Don’t miss this!

BETter Storytelling: Using Brushwork, Edges and Transparency (Kathie Odom) - How I use Brushwork, Edges and Transparency to paint what I see.

The Art of Color: Finding a Palette That Best Expresses Your Personal Color Voice (Dawn Whitelaw) - How to get the most from your palette and how to get color flow in each painting.

From Sketchbook to Studio: Keeping the Spontaneity (Iain Stewart) - Iain will discuss and demonstrate the versatility of the sketchbook as a tool to better organize your thoughts when on site and making important decisions about composition, editing, tonal hierarchy, and the freedom to interpret your surroundings as you choose to portray them. The sketchbook has no rival! It is only once we have studied a place and done our "mental stretching" in the sketchbook that we can move forward with conviction and energy.

Color! Learn to See It; Learn to Use It (Lori Putnam) - Lori will share tips on how to SEE color then demo ideas for when and how to use color to create vibrant paintings while maintaining good color harmony.

MORE - Doing More With Less (David Boyd) - Have you ever forgotten your brushes? Your ultramarine blue? Your pochade box? David will take us further into the exploration of his very popular Doing More With Less topic from PAS 2018, showing us how to create beautiful paintings with less.

Painting Figures in Your Plein Air Scenes (John Guernsey) - Concepts and tips to give your figures a sophisticated and professional look.

Solvent Free Oil Painting (Christine Lashley) - Solvent free oils are great for travel but can they do what traditional oils do? Christine will show us how to work with water mixable oil paints to start drawing and tone the canvas and then add traditional oils to finish the painting. Her beautiful paintings are proof of their value to the artist both in the studio and outdoors.

Keeping it Simple While Experimenting (Mary Garrish) - Who doesn't like black and white photography? Think Ansel Adams. What is there not to like? Right? When you go out into the field to paint, especially to a new destination, I encourage you to start with black and white studies no larger than 6x8. This helps to take the intimidation out of plein air painting by simply mixing 3-5 black and white values. I will demonstrate my process of nailing down a design in black and white, then we will transition to color studies and play with different palettes.

(PLEASE SEE BACK OF THIS PAGE FOR MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF TODAY’S PRESENTATIONS )

Painting Light on Moving Water (Kathleen Hudson) - Kathleen Hudson will share tips for painting water in motion--ocean surf, waterfalls-- while painting a full demonstration. Learn how to convey the movement of water in pant and create a sense of translucency, and pick up a take home guide to study at home.

Energy and Light in the Landscape With Pastels (Greg Barnes) - Greg will demonstrate the techniques he uses to create energetic and compelling paintings en plein air.

A Closer Look at Clouds (Vicki Norman) - Clouds are uniquely beautiful and British landscape painting holds a long-standing tradition of plein air cloud studies. Join Vicki, a British artist, to discover a deeper understanding of

how to paint clouds in different light and atmospheric conditions, their forms, etc. and how to describe them using

various brushwork, colour and techniques.

The Fingerprint of the Artist (Larry Moore) - What makes an artist unique? How is it that we can identify a favorite painter in a sea of paintings in the blink of an eye? Style, the fingerprint of the artist, is comprised of a unique grouping

of the components of the visual language: color, value, edge, shape, drawing, mark making, intent. Learn the process

of developing an approach that is unique and authentic to you.
