Dwight-Englewood SchoolFrom the desk of Dr. James Calleroz White, Head of School

July 2025

Months prior to my joining Dwight-Englewood School and since the start of my tenure, in my conversations with students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni, one message has rung clear: people love this school—not because it is perfect, but because of what it strives to be. Each person I’ve spoken with has shared their belief in the promise of Dwight-Englewood. That belief is powerful, and it’s what makes this place special. As author Satsuki Shibuya reminds us, “We are not perfect human beings, nor do we have to pretend to be, but it is necessary for us to be the best version of ourselves we can be.” This pursuit of becoming—of evolving together into the best version of ourselves—is the heart of what I believe schools should be. And I can already see that Dwight-Englewood is committed to that journey.

Our school’s mission speaks beautifully to this direction and vision:

“As a community of learners, Dwight-Englewood School strives to foster in each student a passion for life-long learning. We seek excellence, honor integrity, and embrace diversity in order to develop the skills, values, and courage to meet the challenges of a changing world and make it better.”

These words are not aspirational alone—they are foundational. They call on all of us to engage deeply in the work of education, to prepare our students not just for college or careers, but for thoughtful, meaningful lives in a world that needs their leadership and compassion. That work begins with us. I believe that the best schools are reflections of what they value, and those values must be lived daily—in our relationships, in our teaching, and in our care for one another.

Here is what I value—and what I see reflected at D-E:

Amidst an environment of ongoing, great change, the essence of our school remains unchanged: a commitment to excellence, to care, and to community. I cannot wait to continue to meet and get to know this incredible community, and I am honored to stand alongside you as we write the next chapter in this story—together.

With respect and excitement,
